Psalm 51:1-10

Psalm 51[a]

The Miserere: Prayer of Repentance

For the leader. A psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had gone in to Bathsheba.(A)

I

Have mercy on me, God, in accord with your merciful love;
    in your abundant compassion blot out my transgressions.
Thoroughly wash away my guilt;
    and from my sin cleanse me.
For I know my transgressions;
    my sin is always before me.(B)
Against you, you alone have I sinned;
    I have done what is evil in your eyes
So that you are just in your word,
    and without reproach in your judgment.(C)
Behold, I was born in guilt,
    in sin my mother conceived me.[b](D)
Behold, you desire true sincerity;
    and secretly you teach me wisdom.
Cleanse me with hyssop,[c] that I may be pure;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.(E)
10 You will let me hear gladness and joy;
    the bones you have crushed will rejoice.

Genesis 7:6-10

The Great Flood. Noah was six hundred years old when the flood came upon the earth. Together with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, Noah went into the ark because of the waters of the flood.(A) Of the clean animals and the unclean, of the birds, and of everything that crawls on the ground, two by two, male and female came to Noah into the ark, just as God had commanded him.(B) 10 When the seven days were over, the waters of the flood came upon the earth.

Genesis 8:1-5

Chapter 8

God remembered Noah and all the animals, wild and tame, that were with him in the ark. So God made a wind sweep over the earth, and the waters began to subside. The fountains of the abyss and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the downpour from the sky was held back. Gradually the waters receded from the earth. At the end of one hundred and fifty days, the waters had so diminished that, in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.[a] The waters continued to diminish until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains appeared.

2 Peter 2:1-10

III. Condemnation of the False Teachers

Chapter 2

False Teachers.[a] There were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will introduce destructive heresies and even deny the Master who ransomed them, bringing swift destruction on themselves.(A) Many will follow their licentious ways, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled.(B) In their greed they will exploit you with fabrications, but from of old their condemnation has not been idle and their destruction does not sleep.(C)

Lessons from the Past. [b]For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but condemned them to the chains of Tartarus[c] and handed them over to be kept for judgment;(D) [d]and if he did not spare the ancient world, even though he preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, together with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the godless world;(E) and if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah [to destruction], reducing them to ashes, making them an example for the godless [people] of what is coming;(F) and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man oppressed by the licentious conduct of unprincipled people (for day after day that righteous man living among them was tormented in his righteous soul at the lawless deeds that he saw and heard), then the Lord knows how to rescue the devout from trial and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,(G) 10 and especially those who follow the flesh with its depraved desire and show contempt for lordship.(H)

False Teachers Denounced.[e] Bold and arrogant, they are not afraid to revile glorious beings,[f]
