Psalm 51:1-10

David wrote this psalm for the music leader.

It was when the prophet Nathan came to him, after David had sex with Bathsheba.

Please forgive me, Lord[a]

51 Please forgive me, God,
    because of your faithful love.
Because you are so kind,
    please clean away my sins.
I have done bad things,
    so wash me to make me clean again.[b]
I know that I have not obeyed you.
    I cannot forget that I am guilty.
It is you that I have done bad things against,
    only you![c]
I have done things that are evil,
    as you know.
And so you are fair when you speak against me.
You are right when you say that I am guilty.
Yes, even from the day I was born
    I have done bad things.
I have always been guilty of sin.
But you want me to be completely good and honest.
You want to teach me to be wise
    in the way that I live.
Splash water over me with a hyssop plant,
    and I will be really clean.[d]
Wash me and I will be whiter than snow.[e]
Please forgive me so that I can be happy.
    Then my whole body will feel well again.
Hide your face from my sins.
Clean away all the bad things that I have done.[f]
10 God, please make my heart new and clean.
And make my spirit strong and true,
    deep inside me.

Genesis 6:1-6

People began to grow in number all over the earth. They gave birth to daughters. The sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful. They chose for themselves any of them that they wanted to become their wives.[a]

The Lord said, ‘My Spirit will not give life to humans for ever. One day they will die. I will not let them live for more than 120 years. Then they will die.’

The Nephilites lived on the earth at that time, and for some time after that. During that time, the sons of God were having sex with the daughters of men, who gave birth to their children. The Nephilites were famous great men and fighters.

The Lord saw that men and women on the earth had become very bad. They thought only of evil things all the time. The Lord was sorry that he had made humans and put them on the earth. He became very upset.

1 Timothy 1:1-11

Paul says ‘Hello’ to Timothy

This letter is from me, Paul. I am an apostle of Christ Jesus. God, our Saviour, is the one who commanded that I should be an apostle. So did Christ Jesus, the one that we trust to help us.

I am writing to you, Timothy. I told you the message about Jesus and you believed in him. So you are like my own child.

I pray that God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord will continue to help you and be kind to you. I pray that they will give you peace in your mind.

Paul tells Timothy to stop the wrong teachers

When I was going to Macedonia, I asked you to stay in Ephesus. Please continue to stay there. Certain people in Ephesus are teaching wrong things about God. You must tell them to stop doing that. Tell people not to listen to false stories. They should not always be studying long lists of their families' names from years ago. Those things do not help people. They only cause them to argue. Instead, they need to understand God's purpose for us. To do that, people must trust him.

We need to teach people to love one another with pure thoughts. They need to be sure in their minds that they are living in a good way. They need to trust God completely. But certain people have failed to live in that way. They would rather talk about things that do not help anyone. They want to be teachers of God's laws. They speak very strongly, but they do not really understand what they are talking about.

The purpose of God's laws

We know that God's laws are good, if people use them properly. We also know that God did not make those laws for people who already live in a good way. He made them for people like this, to show them what is right:

people who refuse to obey any laws;

people who do not want anyone to rule them;

people who turn away from God;

people who do bad things;

people who do not respect God's holy things;

people who kill their father or their mother;

people who murder;

10 people who have sex in a wrong way;

men who have sex with other men;

people who catch other people to sell them;

people who tell lies;

people who do not speak the truth in court;

people who do any wrong things that are against God's true message.

11 That true message is the good news that comes from our great God. We praise him for it. He has chosen me to tell this good news to people.
