Version
Psalm 49:1-12

The sons of Korah wrote this psalm for the music leader.

Riches cannot save you

49 Listen to this, people from every nation.
Yes, listen carefully,
everyone who lives in this world!
All people must listen, whoever you are,
whether you are rich people or poor people.
I will speak wise words to you.
When you know my thoughts,
    you will understand things better.
I have studied proverbs.
I explain what they mean
as I make music on my harp.
When trouble comes,
    why am I afraid?
When cruel people are all round me,
and they want to hurt me,
    why am I afraid?
Those people think that their money will keep them safe.
They are proud about their riches.
Nobody can pay the price to save another person.
Nobody can pay God the price for their life.
A human life costs too much to buy it back.
    Nobody could ever pay enough.
So nobody can live for ever.
Everyone goes to their grave one day.
10 Surely you see that even wise people die,
in the way that fools and stupid people also die.
Then their money will belong to someone else.
11 Their graves will be their homes for ever.
They had their own land,
which was called by their name,
12 but people do not live for ever,
even if they are very rich.
They will die, just like the animals.

Proverbs 24:1-12

More wise thoughts

24 19. Do not be jealous of evil people. Do not try to be friends with them. They only think about how to cause trouble. They only speak to be cruel.

20. It is wisdom that helps a man to build a house.[a] The house will have a strong foundation if he understands what is right. Knowledge will help him to fill its rooms with beautiful and valuable things.

21. A wise man is better than a brave soldier. If a man learns knowledge, he will become stronger. If you receive good advice before you fight a battle, you will win against your enemy.

22. A fool cannot understand wisdom. He has nothing to say when leaders meet.

23. If anyone has ideas to do evil things, people will know that he always causes trouble.

If you decide to do something foolish, that is a sin. People hate anyone who laughs at others.

10 24. If you stop trying in times of trouble, you are really very weak.

11 25. You should rescue people who are in danger of death. 12 You may say, ‘We did not know what was happening.’ But God knows your thoughts. He carefully watches your life and he knows what you are doing. He will pay back to you whatever you deserve.

Ephesians 4:17-24

Live in a way that pleases God

17 So I say this to you. I am sure that I have the Lord's authority to say it. You must not live any longer like the Gentile people who do not know God. They do whatever their silly ideas teach them to do. 18 They cannot understand God's true message because their minds are in the dark. They have not accepted the life that God gives. They have decided that they do not want to know about God. They do not even try to understand. 19 They do not feel ashamed when they do all kinds of disgusting things. They do more and more bad things just to please themselves.

20 But when you learned about Christ, you did not learn to do things like that! 21 I am sure that you have heard about him properly. People taught you the true message that comes from Jesus. 22 They taught you to change the way that you live. You must put away the nature that you had before. That old nature deceived you. As a result, you wanted to do things that would destroy you. 23 Instead, let God's Spirit make you think in a new way. 24 Take up the new nature that God has prepared for you. That nature is like God's own nature. Then you will live in a truly good way that pleases God.
