2 Samuel 11:26-12:10

26 When Uriah’s(A) wife heard that her husband, Uriah, had died, she mourned for him.[a] 27 When the time of mourning ended, David had her brought to his house. She became his wife and bore him a son. However, the Lord considered what David had done to be evil.(B)

Nathan’s Parable and David’s Repentance

12 So the Lord sent Nathan to David.(C) When he arrived, he said to him:

There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very large flocks and herds, but the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised her, and she grew up with him and with his children. From his meager food she would eat, from his cup she would drink, and in his arms she would sleep. She was like a daughter to him. Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man could not bring himself to take one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for his guest.[b]

David was infuriated with the man and said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to die! Because he has done this thing and shown no pity, he must pay four lambs for that lamb.”(D)

Nathan replied to David, “You are the man! This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel,(E) and I rescued you from Saul. I gave your master’s house to you and your master’s wives into your arms,[c] and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah, and if that was not enough, I would have given you even more. Why then have you despised the Lord’s command by doing what I consider[d] evil?(F) You struck down Uriah(G) the Hethite with the sword and took his wife as your own wife—you murdered him with the Ammonite’s sword.(H) 10 Now therefore, the sword will never leave your house(I) because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hethite to be your own wife.’

2 Samuel 12:13-15

13 David responded to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”(A)

Then Nathan replied to David, “And the Lord has taken away your sin; you will not die.(B) 14 However, because you treated[a] the Lord with such contempt in this matter, the son born to you will die.”(C) 15 Then Nathan went home.

The Death of Bathsheba’s Son

The Lord struck the baby that Uriah’s(D) wife had borne to David, and he became deathly ill.

Psalm 32

Psalm 32

The Joy of Forgiveness

Of David. A Maskil.

How joyful is the one
whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered!(A)
How joyful is a person whom
the Lord does not charge with iniquity(B)
and in whose spirit is no deceit!(C)

When I kept silent, my bones became brittle
from my groaning all day long.(D)
For day and night your hand was heavy on me;(E)
my strength was drained[a]
as in the summer’s heat.(F)Selah
Then I acknowledged my sin to you(G)
and did not conceal my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.(H)Selah

Therefore let everyone who is faithful pray to you immediately.[b](I)
When great floodwaters come,
they will not reach him.(J)
You are my hiding place;(K)
you protect me from trouble.(L)
You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance.Selah

I will instruct you and show you the way to go;(M)
with my eye on you, I will give counsel.(N)
Do not be like a horse or mule,
without understanding,
that must be controlled with bit and bridle
or else it will not come near you.(O)

10 Many pains come to the wicked,(P)
but the one who trusts in the Lord
will have faithful love surrounding him.(Q)
11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice,
you righteous ones;
shout for joy,
all you upright in heart.(R)

Galatians 2:15-21

15 We are Jews by birth and not “Gentile sinners,” 16 and yet because we know that a person is not justified by the works of the law(A) but by faith in Jesus Christ,[a] even we ourselves have believed in Christ Jesus. This was so that we might be justified by faith in Christ[b] and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will[c] be justified. 17 But if we ourselves are also found to be “sinners” while seeking to be justified by Christ,(B) is Christ then a promoter[d](C) of sin? Absolutely not!(D) 18 If I rebuild(E) those things that I tore down, I show myself to be a lawbreaker.(F) 19 For through the law I died to the law,(G) so that I might live for God.(H) 20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.(I) The life I now live in the body,[e] I live by faith in the Son of God,(J) who loved(K) me(L) and gave himself(M) for me.(N) 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law,(O) then Christ died(P) for nothing.

Luke 7:36-8:3

Much Forgiveness, Much Love

36 Then one of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him. He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.(A) 37 And a woman in the town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house.(B) She brought an alabaster jar of perfume 38 and stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to wash his feet with her tears. She wiped his feet with her hair, kissing them and anointing them with the perfume.(C)

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “This man, if he were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him—she’s a sinner!” (D)

40 Jesus replied to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

He said, “Say it, teacher.”

41 “A creditor had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii,[a](E) and the other fifty. 42 Since they could not pay it back,(F) he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon answered, “I suppose the one he forgave more.”

“You have judged correctly,” he told him. 44 Turning to the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet,(G) but she, with her tears, has washed my feet and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss,(H) but she hasn’t stopped kissing my feet since I came in. 46 You didn’t anoint my head with olive oil,(I) but she has anointed my feet with perfume. 47 Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that’s why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 Then he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(J)

49 Those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins?” (K)

50 And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you.(L) Go in peace.”(M)

Many Women Support Christ’s Work

Afterward he was traveling from one town and village to another,(N) preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God.(O) The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses:(P) Mary, called Magdalene (seven demons had come out(Q) of her); Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward; Susanna; and many others who were supporting them from their possessions.
