Chapter 62

Jerusalem, the Lord’s Spouse

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
    and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet,
until her vindication shines forth like the dawn
    and her salvation like a burning torch.
The nations will see your vindication
    and all the kings your glory.
You will be called by a new name
    that the mouth of the Lord will reveal.
You will be a glorious crown in the hand of the Lord,
    a royal diadem held by your God.
No longer will you be called “Forsaken,”
    nor will your land be known by the name “Desolate.”
Rather you will be called “My Delight Is in Her,”
    and your land will be known as “Married.”
For the Lord will take delight in you,
    and your land will be his spouse.
As a young man marries a virgin,
    so will your builder marry you,
and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride,
    so will your God rejoice over you.

Psalm 36:5-10

Even when he lies on his bed,[a]
    he is hatching evil plots.
He commits himself to a wicked course
    and refuses to reject evil.
[b]Lord, your kindness extends to the heavens;
    your faithfulness, to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
    your judgments, like the mighty deep;
    you sustain both humans and beasts, O Lord.
How precious, O God, is your kindness![c]
    People seek refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house,[d]
    and you give them to drink from your delightful streams.
10 For with you is the fountain of life,[e]
    and by your light we see light.

1 Corinthians 12:1-11

The Gifts of the Spirit in the Service of the Church[a]

Chapter 12

Discerning the Gifts of the Spirit. Now in regard to the gifts of the Spirit, brethren, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were still pagans you were constantly being enticed and led astray to the worship of mute idols. Therefore, I wish you to understand that no one speaking under the influence of the Spirit of God says, “May Jesus be cursed.”[b] Likewise, no one can say “Jesus is Lord,” except under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit Distributes the Gifts for the Common Good.[c] There are different varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different forms of activity, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.

To each of us, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one, is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom; and to another, the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit. Another by the same Spirit is granted faith, while still another is granted the gift of healing by the same Spirit.

10 To one, is granted the gift of mighty deeds;[d] to another, the gift of prophecy; and to yet another, the gift to discern spirits. One receives the gift of tongues and another the ability to interpret them. 11 One and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing them individually to each person as he wills.

John 2:1-11

The First Sign Worked by Jesus

Chapter 2

The Wedding Feast at Cana.[a] On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana[b] in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited. When the wine was exhausted, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” Jesus responded, “Woman,[c] what concern is this to us? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Now standing nearby there were six stone water jars, of the type used for Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus instructed the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When they had filled them to the brim, he ordered them, “Now draw some out and take it to the chief steward,” and they did so.

When the chief steward tasted the water that had become wine, he did not know where it came from, although the servants who had drawn the water knew. The chief steward called over the bridegroom 10 and said, “Everyone serves the choice wine first, and then an inferior vintage when the guests have been drinking for a while. However, you have saved the best wine until now.”[d]

11 Jesus performed this, the first of his signs,[e] at Cana in Galilee, thereby revealing his glory, and his disciples believed in him.
