Chapter 43

Promises of Redemption and Restoration

But now, thus says the Lord,
    who created you, Jacob, and formed you, Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
    I have called you by name: you are mine.
When you pass through waters, I will be with you;
    through rivers, you shall not be swept away.
When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned,
    nor will flames consume you.
For I, the Lord, am your God,
    the Holy One of Israel, your savior.
I give Egypt as ransom for you,
    Ethiopia and Seba[a] in exchange for you.
Because you are precious in my eyes
    and honored, and I love you,
I give people in return for you
    and nations in exchange for your life.(A)
Fear not, for I am with you;
    from the east I will bring back your offspring,
    from the west I will gather you.
I will say to the north: Give them up!
    and to the south: Do not hold them!
Bring back my sons from afar,
    and my daughters from the ends of the earth:(B)
All who are called by my name
    I created for my glory;
    I formed them, made them.

Psalm 29

Psalm 29[a]

The Lord of Majesty Acclaimed as King of the World

A psalm of David.

I

Give to the Lord, you sons of God,[b]
    give to the Lord glory and might;
Give to the Lord the glory due his name.
    Bow down before the Lord’s holy splendor!(A)

II

The voice of the Lord[c] is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over the mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is power;
    the voice of the Lord is splendor.(B)
The voice of the Lord cracks the cedars;
    the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon,
Makes Lebanon leap like a calf,
    and Sirion[d] like a young bull.
The voice of the Lord strikes with fiery flame;
    the voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the desert of Kadesh.
[e]The voice of the Lord makes the deer dance
    and strips the forests bare.
    All in his Temple say, “Glory!”

III

10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood![f](C)
    The Lord reigns as king forever!
11 May the Lord give might to his people;[g]
    may the Lord bless his people with peace!(D)

Acts 8:14-17

14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, 15 who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the holy Spirit, 16 for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.[a] 17 Then they laid hands on them and they received the holy Spirit.(A)

Luke 3:15-17

15 (A)Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah. 16 [a]John answered them all, saying,(B) “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan[b] is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”(C)

Luke 3:21-22

21 (A)After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,[a] heaven was opened 22 [b](B)and the holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
