Psalm 80:1-7

Psalm 80[a]

Prayer for the Persecuted People

For the director.[b] According to “Lilies.” Eduth. A psalm of Asaph.

[c]Listen to us, O shepherd of Israel,[d]
you who lead Joseph like a flock.
As you sit enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth
    over Ephraim,[e] Benjamin, and Manasseh.
Stir up your power
    and come to save us.
Restore us, O Lord of hosts;
let your face shine[f] upon us,
    and we will be saved.
Lord of hosts,[g]
how long will you be angry
    at your people’s prayers?
You have fed them with the bread of tears
and made them drink tears beyond measure.
You have made us an object of contention to our neighbors,
a source of mockery to our enemies.

Isaiah 66:7-11

Mother Zion

Before she entered into labor,
    she gave birth.
Before she experienced the birth pains,
    she delivered a son.
Who ever heard of such a thing?
Who has ever seen anything like this?
Can a country be born in a single day?
Can a nation be delivered in a single moment?
Yet Zion was scarcely in labor
when she brought forth her children.
Shall I open the womb and not deliver?
    says the Lord.
Shall I close the womb at the moment of delivery?
    says your God.
10 Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her,
    all you who love her.
Be joyful as you rejoice with her,
all you who mourned over her,
11 so that you may suck fully and be satisfied
    from her consoling breast,
as you drink deeply with delight
    at her abundant bosom.

Luke 13:31-35

31 Herod’s Desire To Kill Jesus.[a] At that time, some Pharisees came and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else, for Herod wants to kill you.” 32 He answered them, “Go and tell that fox: ‘Behold, today and tomorrow I will be casting out demons and healing people, and on the third day I will finish my work. 33 Yet I must continue to go on today and tomorrow and the next day, since it would not be right for a prophet to be killed outside Jerusalem.

34 The Lament over Jerusalem.[b]“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you murder the Prophets and stone the messengers sent to you! How often have I longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not allow it! 35 Behold, your house has been abandoned. I tell you, you will not see me until you say: ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ”
