Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
13 (C)Return, O Yahweh; (D)how long will it be?
And [c]be (E)sorry for Your slaves.
14 O (F)satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness,
That we may (G)sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15 (H)Make us glad [d]according to the days You have afflicted us,
And the (I)years we have seen [e]evil.
16 Let Your (J)work appear to Your slaves
And Your (K)majesty [f]to their sons.
17 Let the (L)favor of the Lord our God be upon us;
And (M)establish for us the work of our hands;
Establish the work of our hands.
13 Hear and (A)testify against the house of Jacob,”
Declares Lord Yahweh, the God of hosts.
14 “For on the day that I punish Israel’s transgressions,
I will also punish the altars of (B)Bethel;
The horns of the altar will be cut in pieces,
And they will fall to the ground.
15 I will also strike the [a](C)winter house together with the (D)summer house;
The houses of [b](E)ivory will also perish,
And the (F)great houses will come to an end,”
Declares Yahweh.
Yet You Have Not Returned to Me
4 Hear this word, you cows of (G)Bashan who are on the (H)mountain of Samaria,
Who (I)oppress the poor, who crush the needy,
Who say to their [c]husbands, “Bring now, that we may (J)drink!”
2 Lord Yahweh has (K)sworn by His (L)holiness that,
“Behold, the days are coming upon you,
And [d]they will take you away with (M)meat hooks,
And the last of you with (N)fish hooks.
3 And you will (O)go out through breaches in the walls,
Each one straight before her,
And you [e]will be cast to Harmon,” declares Yahweh.
4 “Enter Bethel and transgress;
In Gilgal multiply transgression!
(P)Bring your sacrifices every morning,
Your tithes every three days.
5 [f]And offer a (Q)thank offering also from that which is leavened,
And call for (R)freewill offerings; cause them to be heard about.
For so you (S)love to do, you sons of Israel,”
Declares Lord Yahweh.
God’s Commandments, Man’s Traditions
15 (A)Then some Pharisees and scribes *came to Jesus (B)from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they (C)do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” 3 And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘(D)Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘(E)He who speaks evil of father or mother is to [a]be put to death.’ 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever you might benefit from me [b]is given to God,” 6 he need not [c]honor his father.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you:
