⁵ The dweller of Samaria will fear
For the ^[a](A)calf of ^(B)Beth-aven.
Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
And its ^(C)idolatrous priests ^[b]will cry out over it,
Over its ^(D)glory, since it has gone into exile from them.
⁶ The thing itself will be carried to ^(E)Assyria
As tribute to ^[c](F)King Jareb;
Ephraim will ^(G)receive shame,
And Israel will be ashamed of its ^(H)own counsel.
⁷ Samaria will be ^(I)ruined with her king
Like a stick on the surface of the water.
⁸ Also the ^(J)high places of Aven, the ^(K)sin of Israel, will be ^[d]eradicated;
^(L)Thorn and thistle will grow on their altars;
Then they will ^(M)say to the mountains,
“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”

⁴ “Enter Bethel and transgress;
In Gilgal multiply transgression!
^(A)Bring your sacrifices every morning,
Your tithes every three days.
