Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Where Can I Go from Your Spirit?
For the choir director. Of David. A Psalm.
139 O Yahweh, You have (A)searched me and known me.
2 You (B)know [a]when I sit down and [b]when I rise up;
You (C)understand my thought from afar.
3 You [c](D)scrutinize my [d]path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
4 [e]Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O Yahweh, You (E)know it all.
5 You have (F)enclosed me behind and before,
And You have (G)put Your hand upon me.
6 Such (H)knowledge is (I)too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot attain to it.
7 (J)Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
8 (K)If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, (L)You are there.
9 If I lift up the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand will (M)lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
11 If I say, “Surely the (N)darkness will (O)bruise me,
And the light around me will be night,”
12 Even the (P)darkness is not too dark for You,
And the night is as bright as the day.
(Q)Darkness and light are alike to You.
13 For You (R)formed my [f]inward parts;
You (S)wove me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give thanks to You, for [g]I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
(T)Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
15 My [h](U)frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And (V)intricately woven in the (W)depths of the earth;
16 Your (X)eyes have seen my unshaped substance;
And in (Y)Your book all of them were written
The (Z)days that were formed for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.
4 Now the word of Yahweh came to me saying,
5 “Before I (A)formed you in the [a]innermost parts I knew you,
And (B)before you came out from the womb I set you apart;
I have (C)given you as a prophet to the nations.”
6 Then (D)I said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh!
Behold, I do not know how to speak
Because (E)I am a youth.”
7 But Yahweh said to me,
“Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
(F)Because everywhere I send you, you shall go,
And (G)all that I command you, you shall speak.
8 (H)Do not be afraid of them,
For (I)I am with you to deliver you,” declares Yahweh.
9 Then Yahweh sent forth His hand and (J)touched my mouth, and Yahweh said to me,
21 Then He said again to them, “I am going away, and (A)you will seek Me, and (B)will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So (C)the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, since He says, ‘(D)Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, “(E)You are from below, I am from above. (F)You are of this world, (G)I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you (H)will die in your sins. For unless you believe that [a](I)I am He, (J)you will die in your sins.” 25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “[b]What have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but (K)He who sent Me is true; and (L)the things which I heard from Him, these I am saying to the world.” 27 They did not know that He had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you (M)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that [c](N)I am He, and (O)I do nothing from Myself, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; (P)He [d]has not left Me alone, for (Q)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He was speaking these things, (R)many believed in Him.
The Son Will Make You Free
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “(S)If you abide in My word, then you are truly My (T)disciples; 32 and (U)you will know the truth, and (V)the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “(W)We are Abraham’s seed and have never yet been enslaved to anyone. How is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (X)everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 (Y)And the slave does not remain in the house forever; (Z)the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son (AA)makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are (AB)Abraham’s seed; yet (AC)you are seeking to kill Me, because My word [e]has no place in you. 38 I speak the things which I have seen [f]with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from (AD)your father.”
