38 Then the Lord answered Job out of a whirlwind, and said:

² Who is this that wrappeth up sentences in unskillful words?

³ Gird up thy loins like a man: I will ask thee, and answer thou me.

⁴ Where wast thou when I laid up the foundations of the earth? tell me if thou hast understanding.

⁵ Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

⁶ Upon what are its bases grounded? or who laid the corner stone thereof,

⁷ When the morning stars praised me together, and all the sons of God made a joyful melody?

⁸ Who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth as issuing out of the womb:

⁹ When I made a cloud the garment thereof, and wrapped it in a mist as in swaddling bands?

¹⁰ I set my bounds around it, and made it bars and doors:

¹¹ And I said: Hitherto thou shalt come, and shalt go no further, and here thou shalt break thy swelling waves.

² My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready: I will sing, and will give praise, with my glory.

³ Arise, my glory; arise, psaltery and harp: I will arise in the morning early.

6 And we helping do exhort you, that you receive not the grace of God in vain.

² For he saith: In an accepted time have I heard thee; and in the day of salvation have I helped thee. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

³ Giving no offence to any man, that our ministry be not blamed:

⁴ But in all things let us exhibit ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in tribulation, in necessities, in distresses,

⁵ In stripes, in prisons, in seditions, in labours, in watchings, in fastings,

⁶ In chastity, in knowledge, in longsuffering, in sweetness, in the Holy Ghost, in charity unfeigned,

⁷ In the word of truth, in the power of God; by the armour of justice on the right hand and on the left;

⁸ By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet known;

⁹ As dying, and behold we live; as chastised, and not killed;

¹⁰ As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as needy, yet enriching many; as having nothing, and possessing all things.

¹¹ Our mouth is open to you, O ye Corinthians, our heart is enlarged.

¹² You are not straitened in us, but in your own bowels you are straitened.

¹³ But having the same recompense, (I speak as to my children,) be you also enlarged.

³⁵ And he saith to them that day, when evening was come: Let us pass over to the other side.

³⁶ And sending away the multitude, they take him even as he was in the ship: and there were other ships with him.

³⁷ And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that the ship was filled.

³⁸ And he was in the hinder part of the ship, sleeping upon a pillow; and they awake him, and say to him: Master, doth it not concern thee that we perish?

³⁹ And rising up, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea: Peace, be still. And the wind ceased: and there was made a great calm.

⁴⁰ And he said to them: Why are you fearful? have you not faith yet? And they feared exceedingly: and they said one to another: Who is this (thinkest thou) that both wind and sea obey him?
