Version
Psalm 29

This is a song that David wrote.

The storm[a]

29 All you angels in heaven,
say how great the Lord is!
Say that the Lord rules with power!
Say that the Lord's name is great!
Worship the Lord for who he is,
and remember that he is holy.
The voice of the Lord shouts over the water.
The God of glory makes the noise of thunder.
The Lord appears over the great sea.[b]
The Lord's voice is powerful.
It has the authority of a king!
When the Lord shouts,
    even the cedar trees break!
Yes! The Lord breaks the great cedar trees of Lebanon.[c]
He makes Lebanon jump like a calf.
He causes Hermon mountain to shake
    like a young bull jumps.
The Lord's voice makes fire
    like lightning in the sky.
When the Lord shouts,
    the desert shakes!
He makes the Kadesh desert shake!
When the Lord shouts,
the big oak trees bend over.
The leaves fall off all the trees in the forests.
But in his temple,
    everyone says, ‘He is great!’
10 The Lord rules as king over the deep waters.[d]
The Lord will be king for ever.
11 The Lord makes his people strong.
The Lord blesses his people with peace.

Isaiah 1:1-4

Isaiah's vision and message

This is a vision that God showed to Isaiah, the son of Amoz. It was a message about his country, Judah, and the city of Jerusalem.[a] God showed it to Isaiah at the time when Uzziah, then Jotham, then Ahaz and then Hezekiah were kings of Judah.

God's people are guilty[b]

Hear the Lord, those who live in heaven![c] Listen to him, you people on the earth! Listen carefully because the Lord has spoken! He says, ‘I have helped my children to grow. I took care of them but now they have turned against me!

An ox knows its master. A donkey knows the place where its master feeds it. But Israel's people do not know me. My people do not understand me.’

Oh! Israel, you are a nation of people who do not obey me. The people are guilty of many evil things. Their sins are like a heavy weight on their backs. They are a family of people who do wicked things. They have turned away from the Lord, the Holy God of Israel. They have turned their backs against him.

Isaiah 1:16-20

16 Wash yourselves and make yourselves clean! Remove your sins, so that I no longer see them. Stop doing evil things!

17 Instead, learn to do what is right. Be honest and fair in what you do. Help people who are in pain. Make sure that widows and children who have no family receive justice.’

18 The Lord says, ‘Please come, so that we talk about this together. Even if your sins are like a red stain, they will become as white as snow. Even if they are bright red, they will become like white wool.[a]

19 I will forgive you if you agree to obey me. If you are ready to do that, you will again eat plenty of good food from the land. 20 But if you refuse to obey me and you turn against me, you will die in war.’

That is what the Lord himself has said.

Romans 8:1-8

We can live by God's Spirit

Now we know this: God has forgiven those people who are united with Christ Jesus. God will never say that they are guilty. If you belong to Christ Jesus, God's Spirit has given you a new life. God's Spirit now rules in your life and he has made you free. Sin and death no longer have authority over you.

The Law that God gave to Moses could not make us free like that. We were too weak to obey his Law because we are human. But God has done what his Law could not do. He sent his own Son to become a person like us. His human body was like the body of people who do wrong things. God's Son died as a sacrifice to take away the punishment for our sins. In that way, God destroyed the power of sin over people who are weak and human. God did this so that we could become right with him. God's Law showed us how to be right with him. And now we can be right with God, if we live with God's Spirit as our guide. We do not do what our weak human thoughts want us to do.

Some people do what their weak human thoughts want them to do. They think about the things that will make themselves happy. But people who live with God's Spirit as their guide think about what will make God's Spirit happy. People who let their human thoughts rule them will die. But people who think about what God's Spirit wants will have life with God. They will have peace inside themselves. If our weak human thoughts rule us, we become God's enemies. People like that do not want to obey God's Law. They are not even able to obey it. People who let their human thoughts rule them cannot make God happy.
