Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
God Helps Men in Trouble
107 Give thanks to the Lord for He is good! His loving-kindness lasts forever! 2 Let the people who have been saved say so. He has bought them and set them free from the hand of those who hated them. 3 He gathered them from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
4 Some traveled through the desert wastes. They did not find a way to a city where they could live. 5 They were hungry and thirsty. Their souls became weak within them. 6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble. And He took them out of their suffering. 7 He led them by a straight path to a city where they could live. 8 Let them give thanks to the Lord for His loving-kindness and His great works to the children of men! 9 For He fills the thirsty soul. And He fills the hungry soul with good things.
10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death. They suffered in prison in iron chains. 11 Because they had turned against the Words of God. They hated what the Most High told them to do. 12 So He loaded them down with hard work. They fell and there was no one to help. 13 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble. And He saved them from their suffering. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death. And He broke their chains. 15 Let them give thanks to the Lord for His loving-kindness and His great works to the children of men! 16 For He has broken gates of brass and cut through walls of iron.
Bitter Water
22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea. They went into the Desert of Shur. They went three days in the desert and found no water. 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter. So it was given the name Marah. 24 The people complained to Moses, saying, “What can we drink?” 25 Moses cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.
There the Lord made a Law for them and tested them. 26 He said, “Listen well to the voice of the Lord your God. Do what is right in His eyes. Listen to what He tells you, and obey all His Laws. If you do this, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord Who heals you.”
27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy trees. They set up their tents there beside the water.
Jesus Was Greater Than Moses
3 Christian brothers, you have been chosen and set apart by God. So let us think about Jesus. He is the One God sent and He is the Religious Leader of our Christian faith. 2 Jesus was faithful in God’s house just as Moses was faithful in all of God’s house. 3 The man who builds a house gets more honor than the house. That is why Jesus gets more honor than Moses. 4 Every house is built by someone. And God is the One Who has built everything. 5 Moses was a faithful servant owned by God in God’s house. He spoke of the things that would be told about later on. 6 But Christ was faithful as a Son Who is Head of God’s house. We are of God’s house if we keep our trust in the Lord until the end. This is our hope.
