New Life Version (NLV)
Version
Micah 3:5-12

This is what the Lord says about the men who speak in God’s name and lead my people the wrong way. When they have something to eat, they speak of peace. But they make holy war against him who does not feed them. So night will come to you without a special dream. Darkness will come to you without any word about the future. The sun will go down on those who speak about special dreams, and the day will become dark over them. Those who tell what is going to happen in the future will be ashamed. Those who learn about the future using their secret ways will be ashamed. They will all cover their mouths because there is no answer from God. But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, with what is fair, and with strength. I am able to make known to Jacob his wrong-doing, and to Israel his sin. Now listen to this, you leaders of Jacob and rulers of the people of Israel. You hate what is fair, and turn everything around that is right. 10 You built Zion with blood and Jerusalem with much wrong-doing. 11 Her leaders take pay in secret for doing wrong. Her religious leaders teach for a price. Her men who tell what is going to happen in the future do it for money. Yet they rest upon the Lord and say, “Is not the Lord among us? No trouble will come to us.” 12 So because of you Zion will be plowed as a field. Jerusalem will be laid waste. And the mountain of the Lord’s house will be covered with trees.

Psalm 43

Prayer to Be Kept Safe

43 Stand by me, O God, and speak in my favor against a sinful nation. Save me from the lying and sinful man. For You are the God of my strength. Why have You turned away from me? Why do I have sorrow because those who hate me come against me with power?

Send out Your light and Your truth. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to Your holy hill and to the places where You live. Then I will go to the altar of God, the God of my joy. And I will praise You with the harp, O God, my God.

Why are you sad, O my soul? Why have you become troubled within me? Hope in God, for I will praise Him again, my help and my God.

1 Thessalonians 2:9-13

You remember, Christian brothers, we worked night and day for our food and clothes while we preached the Good News to you. We did not want to make it hard for you. 10 You know, and so does God, how pure and right and without blame we were among you who believe. 11 As a father helps his children, you know how we wanted to help you and give you comfort. We told you with strong words 12 that you should live to please God. He is the One Who chose you to come into His holy nation and to share His shining-greatness.

13 We always thank God that when you heard the Word of God from us, you believed it. You did not receive it as from men, but you received it as the Word of God. That is what it is. It is at work in the lives of you who believe.

Matthew 23:1-12

The Teachers of the Law and the Proud Religious Law-Keepers (A)

23 Then Jesus talked to the many people and to His followers. He said, “The teachers of the Law and the proud religious law-keepers have put themselves in Moses’ place as teachers. Do what they tell you to do and keep on doing it. But do not follow what they do. They preach but do not obey their own preaching. They make heavy loads and put them on the shoulders of men. But they will not help lift them with a finger. Everything they do, they do to be seen of men. They have words from the Holy Writings written in large letters on their left arm and forehead and they make wide trimming for their clothes. They like to have the important places at big suppers and the best seats in the Jewish places of worship. They like to have people show respect to them as they stand in the center of town where people gather. They like to be called teacher.

“But you are not to be called teacher. There is only one Teacher, and all of you are brothers. Do not call any man here on earth your father. There is only one Father and He is in heaven. 10 You are not to be called leader. There is only one Leader and He is Christ.

11 “He who is greatest among you will be the one to care for you. 12 The person who thinks he is important will find out how little he is worth. The person who is not trying to honor himself will be made important.
