Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
8 Let me hear what the God, Yahweh, will speak;
For He will (A)speak peace to His people, [a]to His holy ones;
But let them not (B)turn back to [b]folly.
9 Surely (C)His salvation is near to those who [c]fear Him,
That (D)glory may dwell in our land.
10 (E)Lovingkindness and [d]truth have met together;
(F)Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 [e]Truth (G)springs up from the earth,
And righteousness looks down from heaven.
12 Indeed, (H)Yahweh will give what is good,
And our (I)land will yield its produce.
13 (J)Righteousness will go before Him
And will establish the way of His steps.
17 Now it happened when Ahab saw Elijah, that (A)Ahab said to him, “Is this you, you troubler of Israel?” 18 And he said, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, because (B)you have forsaken the commandments of Yahweh and (C)you have followed the Baals. 19 So now then send and gather to me all Israel at (D)Mount Carmel, (E)together with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of (F)the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. And (A)he repaired the altar of Yahweh which had been pulled down. 31 Then Elijah took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Yahweh had come, saying, “(B)Israel shall be your name.” 32 And with the stones he built an altar in (C)the name of Yahweh, and he made a trench around the altar, large enough to hold two [a]seahs of seed. 33 (D)Then he arranged the wood and cut the ox in pieces and placed it on the wood. 34 And he said, “Fill four pitchers with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.” And he said, “Do it a second time,” and they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time,” and they did it a third time. 35 And the water flowed around the altar and he also filled the trench with water.
Yahweh Answers, He Is God
36 (E)Now it happened at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “(F)O Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that (G)You are God in Israel and that I am Your slave and (H)I have done all these things at Your word. 37 Answer me, O Yahweh, answer me, that this people may know that You, O Yahweh, are God, and that You have turned their heart back again.” 38 Then the (I)fire of Yahweh fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And all the people saw it and fell on their faces and said, “(J)Yahweh, He is God; Yahweh, He is God.” 40 Then Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape.” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to (K)the brook Kishon, (L)and slaughtered them there.
24 Now a Jew named (A)Apollos, an (B)Alexandrian by birth, [a]an eloquent man, arrived at (C)Ephesus; and he was mighty in the Scriptures. 25 This man had been instructed in (D)the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, being acquainted only with (E)the baptism of John; 26 and [b]he began to speak out boldly in the synagogue. But when (F)Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him (G)the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wanted to go across to (H)Achaia, (I)the brothers encouraged him and wrote to (J)the disciples to welcome him; and when he had arrived, he greatly [c]helped those who had believed through grace, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating (K)by the Scriptures that (L)Jesus is the [d]Christ.
