Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
11 Teach me your way, Lord,
and I will live by your truth.
Give me an undivided mind to fear your name.(A)
12 I will praise you with all my heart, Lord my God,
and will honor your name forever.(B)
13 For your faithful love for me is great,
and you rescue my life from the depths of Sheol.(C)
14 God, arrogant people have attacked me;
a gang of ruthless men intends to kill me.
They do not let you guide them.[a](D)
15 But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth.(E)
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me.
Give your strength to your servant;
save the son of your female servant.(F)
17 Show me a sign of your goodness;
my enemies will see and be put to shame
because you, Lord, have helped and comforted me.(G)
21 “Submit your case,” says the Lord.
“Present your arguments,” says Jacob’s King.
22 “Let them come and tell us
what will happen.(A)
Tell us the past events,
so that we may reflect on them
and know the outcome,
or tell us the future.
23 Tell us the coming events,(B)
then we will know that you are gods.
Indeed, do something good or bad,
then we will be in awe[a] when we see it.
24 Look, you are nothing(C)
and your work is worthless.
Anyone who chooses you is detestable.
25 “I have stirred up one from the north,(D) and he has come,
one from the east(E) who invokes my[b] name.(F)
He will march over rulers as if they were mud,
like a potter who treads the clay.
26 Who told about this from the beginning,
so that we might know,
and from times past,
so that we might say, ‘He is right’?
No one announced it,
no one told it,
no one heard your words.
27 I was the first to say to Zion,[c]
‘Look! Here they are!’
And I gave Jerusalem a herald with good news.(G)
28 When I look, there is no one;
there is no counselor among them;
when I ask them, they have nothing to say.(H)
29 Look, all of them are a delusion;[d]
their works are nonexistent;
their images are wind and emptiness.
Warning against Neglect
2 For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.(A) 2 For if the message spoken through angels was legally binding[a](B) and every transgression and disobedience received a just punishment,(C) 3 how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?(D) This salvation had its beginning when it was spoken of by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us by those who heard him.(E) 4 At the same time, God also testified by signs and wonders, various miracles, and distributions of gifts from the Holy Spirit according to his will.(F)
Jesus and Humanity
5 For he has not subjected to angels the world to come that we are talking about. 6 But someone somewhere has testified:
What is man that you remember him,
or the son of man that you care for him?
7 You made him lower than the angels
for a short time;
you crowned him with glory and honor[b]
8 and subjected everything under his feet.[c]
For in subjecting everything to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. As it is, we do not yet see everything subjected to him.(G) 9 But we do see Jesus—made lower than the angels for a short time so that by God’s grace he might taste death(H) for everyone—crowned with glory and honor(I) because he suffered death.(J)
