Psalm 89:1-4

Psalm 89

The Covenant With David

Heading
A maskil by Ethan the Ezrahite.

Opening Praise

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever.
With my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
    through all generations.
Yes, I have said, “Your mercy is built to last forever.
In the heavens you establish your faithfulness.”

The Statement of the Covenant

The Lord said,[a]
“I have made a covenant with my chosen one.
I have sworn to David my servant.
I will establish your seed[b] forever, Interlude
and I will build your throne through all generations.”

Psalm 89:15-18

The Security of God’s People

15 How blessed are the people who know the joyful cry.
Lord, they walk in the light from your face.
16 In your name they celebrate all day long.
In your righteousness they are lifted up.
17 For you are the beauty of their strength,
and by your favor you exalt our Horn.[a]
18 Indeed, our Shield belongs to the Lord,
our King to the Holy One of Israel.

Jeremiah 25:1-7

Seventy Years of Exile

25 This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah. This was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and to everyone who lived in Jerusalem.

For twenty-three years, from the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, to this very day, the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken to you again and again. But you have not listened. The Lord sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, but you have not listened or paid attention.

The Lord said: Turn, each of you, from your evil way of life and from the evil things you do. Live on the land the Lord gave to you and to your forefathers long ago to be yours forever. Do not follow after other gods or serve them or worship them, and do not provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.

But you would not obey me, declares the Lord. So you kept provoking me to anger with the work of your hands, and you have hurt yourselves.

Galatians 5:2-6

Look, I, Paul, tell you that if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. I testify again to every man who allows himself to be circumcised that he is obligated to do the whole law. You who are trying to be declared righteous by the law are completely separated from Christ. You have fallen from grace.

Indeed, through the Spirit, we by faith are eagerly waiting for the sure hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision matters. Rather, it is faith working through love that matters.
