Psalm 17:1-9

Psalm 17

A prayer by David.

Hear my plea for justice, O Yahweh.
    Pay attention to my cry.
Open your ears to my prayer,
which comes from lips free from deceit.
Let the verdict of my innocence come directly from you.
Let your eyes observe what is fair.

You have probed my heart.
You have confronted me at night.
You have tested me like silver,
    but you found nothing wrong.
I have determined that my mouth will not sin.
I have avoided cruelty because of your word.
In spite of what others have done,
my steps have remained firmly in your paths.
        My feet have not slipped.
I have called on you because you answer me, O El.
    Turn your ear toward me.
Hear what I have to say.
Reveal your miraculous deeds of mercy,
O Savior of those who find refuge by your side
        from those who attack them.
Guard me as if I were the pupil in your eye.
Hide me in the shadow of your wings.
Hide me from wicked people who violently attack me,
from my deadly enemies who surround me.

Exodus 3:13-20

13 Then Moses replied to Elohim, “Suppose I go to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The Elohim of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ What should I tell them?”

14 Elohim answered Moses, “Ehyeh Who Ehyeh. This is what you must say to the people of Israel: ‘Ehyeh has sent me to you.’”

15 Again Elohim said to Moses, “This is what you must say to the people of Israel: Yahweh Elohim of your ancestors, the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever. This is my title throughout every generation.

16 “Go, assemble the leaders of Israel. Say to them, ‘Yahweh Elohim of your ancestors, the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, appeared to me. He said, “I have paid close attention to you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 I promise I will take you away from your misery in Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.”’

18 “The leaders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the leaders must go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘Yahweh Elohim of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us travel three days into the desert to offer sacrifices to Yahweh our Elohim.’ 19 I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go, even if he is forced to. 20 So I will use my power to strike Egypt. After all the miracles that I will do there, he will let you go.

Luke 20:1-8

Jesus’ Authority Challenged(A)

20 One day Yeshua was teaching the people in the temple courtyard and telling them the Good News. The chief priests, the experts in Moses’ Teachings, and the leaders came up to him. They asked him, “Tell us, what gives you the right to do these things? Who told you that you could do this?”

Yeshua answered them, “I, too, have a question for you. Tell me, did John’s right to baptize come from heaven or from humans?”

They talked about this among themselves. They said, “If we say, ‘from heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘from humans,’ everyone will stone us to death. They’re convinced that John was a prophet.” So they answered that they didn’t know who gave John the right to baptize.

Yeshua told them, “Then I won’t tell you why I have the right to do these things.”
