Wisdom of Ben Sira 35:12-17

12 Give to the Most High as he has given to you,
    as generously as your means allow.
13 For the Lord never neglects to repay,
    and he will reward you sevenfold.
[The man who gives to the poor makes God his debtor;
    who will make recompense if not God?][a]

God Judges According to the Heart[b]

14 Do not offer God a bribe, for he will not accept it,
15     and do not place your hope in a dishonest sacrifice.
For the Lord is a judge,
    and he is completely impartial.
16 He will not show favoritism to the detriment of the poor,
    and he listens to the cries of the oppressed.
17 He does not ignore the supplication of the orphan,
    or that of the widow when she pours out her complaint.

Jeremiah 14:7-10

Even though our sins bear witness against us,
    take action, O Lord, for your name’s sake;
forgive us for our many acts of infidelity,
    our countless sins against you.
Lord, you are the hope of Israel
    and its savior in time of need.
Why are you like a stranger in the land,
    like a traveler who only stays for a single night?
Why should you be taken unawares,
    like a warrior who is powerless to help us?
You are in our midst, O Lord,
    and we bear your name.
    Do not forsake us!
10 Thus says the Lord about this people:
    Truly they have loved to stray
    and have not restrained their feet.
Therefore, the Lord no longer takes pleasure in them;
    he will now remember their iniquity
    and punish their sins.

Jeremiah 14:19-22

19 Have you rejected Judah completely?
    Has Zion become loathsome to you?
Why have you afflicted us
    to a point where we cannot be healed?
We hope for peace, but to no avail,
    for a time of healing, only to encounter terror.
20 Lord, we acknowledge our wickedness
    and the guilt of our fathers;
    we have indeed sinned against you.
21 For your name’s sake do not reject us;
    do not dishonor your glorious throne.
Remember your covenant with us
    and do not break it.
22 Can any worthless idols of the nations bring rain?
    Do the heavens send down rain showers on their own?
No, it is you who accomplish all this,
    Lord, our God,
    and therefore, we place our hope in you.

Psalm 84:1-7

Psalm 84[a]

Longing for God’s Dwelling

For the director.[b] “Upon the gittith.” A psalm of the sons of Korah.

How lovely is your dwelling place,
    Lord of hosts.[c]
My soul yearns and is filled with longing
    for the courts of the Lord.
My heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.
Just as the sparrow searches for a home
    and the swallow builds a nest for herself
    where she may place her young,
so do I seek your altars,[d]
    Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
Blessed[e] are those who dwell in your house;
    they offer continuous praise to you. Selah
Blessed are those who find strength in you,
    who set their hearts upon your ways.[f]
As they pass through the Valley of Baca,
    they turn it into a region of springs,
    and the early rain covers it with pools.[g]

2 Timothy 4:6-8

The Triumphs of a Man of God[a]

Reward for Fidelity. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. Now waiting for me is the crown[b] of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day—and not only to me, but to all those who have eagerly longed for his appearance.

2 Timothy 4:16-18

16 At the first hearing of my case, no one came to court to support me. Every one of them deserted me. May it not be held against them! 17 But the Lord stood at my side[a] and gave me strength so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it.

Thus was I rescued from the lion’s jaws. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.[b]

Luke 18:9-14

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector.[a] He also told the following parable to some people who prided themselves about their own righteousness and regarded others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood up and said this prayer to himself: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—greedy, dishonest, adulterous—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and pay tithes on all my income.’

13 “The tax collector, however, stood some distance away and would not even raise his eyes to heaven. Rather, he kept beating his breast as he said, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner.’ 14 This man, I tell you, returned to his home justified, whereas the other did not. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
