Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
12 ¶ Blessed is the people whose God is the LORD; the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.
13 The LORD looked from heaven; he saw all the sons of Adam.
14 From the place of his habitation he looked upon all the inhabitants of the earth.
15 He fashioned all of their hearts; he considers all their works.
16 The king is not saved by the multitude of the army; the mighty man does not escape by much strength.
17 A horse is a vain thing for salvation; neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.
18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those that fear him, upon those that wait for his mercy
19 to deliver their souls from death and to keep them alive in the famine.
20 Our soul waited for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.
21 Therefore our heart shall rejoice in him because we have trusted in the name of his holiness.
22 Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we have waited upon thee.
21 ¶ But Job answered and said,
2 Hear diligently my speech, and let this be instead of your consolations.
3 Suffer me that I may speak; and after I have spoken, mock on.
4 As for me, is my complaint to man? And if so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
5 Look upon me and be astonished and lay your hand upon your mouth.
6 Even I myself, when I remember, I am afraid, and trembling takes hold on my flesh.
7 ¶ Why do the wicked live and become old and even increase in riches?
8 Their seed is with them, established in their sight, and their offspring before their eyes.
9 Their houses are safe from fear; neither is the rod of God upon them.
10 Their cows conceive, and do not abort; their cows calve and do not cast forth their young.
11 They send forth their little ones like a flock of sheep, and their children dance.
12 They jump at the sound of the timbrel and harp and rejoice at the sound of the organ.
13 They spend their days in pleasure and in a moment go down to Sheol.
14 Therefore, they say unto God, Depart from us; for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.
15 Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have if we pray unto him?
16 Behold that their good is not in their hands; the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
9 ¶ I say the truth in Christ, I do not lie, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit,
2 that I have great sorrow and continual pain in my heart.
3 For I could wish that myself were anathema from Christ for my brethren, those who are my kinsmen according to the flesh,
4 who are Israelites, to whom pertains the adoption as sons and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises,
5 whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh is the Christ, who is God over all things, blessed for all the ages. Amen.
6 ¶ Not as though the word of God has been deficient. For not all the descendants of Israel are Israelites;
7 neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are all sons, but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8 That is, Those who are sons of the flesh, these are not the sons of God; but those who are sons of the promise are counted in the generation.
9 For the word of the promise is this, At this time I will come, and Sara shall have a son.
