Psalm 49:1-12

A Fool Trusts in Riches

49 Hear this, all people. Listen, all who live in the world, both small and great, rich and poor together. My mouth will speak wisdom. And the thoughts of my heart will be understanding. I will turn my ear to a wise saying. With a harp, I will tell what is hard to understand.

Why should I be afraid in the days of trouble, when the sin of those who hate me is all around me? They trust in their riches, and are proud of all they have. No man can save his brother. No man can pay God enough to save him. The cost is much for his soul to be saved. Man should stop trying to live forever and not see the grave.

10 For he sees that even wise men die. The fool and those who cannot think well die alike. And they leave their riches to others. 11 They think in their hearts that their houses will last forever, and that the places where they live will last for all their children to follow. They have used their own names to name their lands. 12 But man with all his honor does not last. He is like the animals that die.

Proverbs 24:1-12

24 Do not be jealous of sinful men. Do not want to be with them. For their hearts make plans to hurt others and their lips talk about trouble.

A house is built by wisdom. It is made strong by understanding, and by much learning the rooms are filled with all riches that are pleasing and of great worth.

A wise man is strong. A man of much learning adds to his strength. For by wise leading you will make war, and the fight is won when there are many wise men to help you make the plans.

Wisdom is too hard for a fool to understand. He does not open his mouth in the gate. He who plans to do wrong will be called a trouble maker. Planning to do foolish things is sin, and the man who laughs at the truth is hated by men.

10 If you are weak in the day of trouble, your strength is small.

11 Save those who are being taken away to death. Keep them from being killed. 12 If you say, “See, we did not know this,” does not He Who knows what is in hearts see it? Does not He Who keeps watch over your soul know it? And will He not pay each man for his work?

Ephesians 4:17-24

The Old and the New Life

17 I tell you this in the name of the Lord: You must not live any longer like the people of the world who do not know God. Their thoughts are foolish. 18 Their minds are in darkness. They are strangers to the life of God. This is because they have closed their minds to Him and have turned their hearts away from Him. 19 They do not care anymore about what is right or wrong. They have turned themselves over to the sinful ways of the world and are always wanting to do every kind of sinful act they can think of.

20 But you did not learn anything like this from Christ. 21 If you have heard of Him and have learned from Him, 22 put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. 23 Let your minds and hearts be made new. 24 You must become a new person and be God-like. Then you will be made right with God and have a true holy life.
