Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Lord Appoints a King
A psalm of David.
110 The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit by me at my right side
until I put your enemies under your control.”
2 The Lord will enlarge your kingdom beyond Jerusalem,
and you will rule over your enemies.
3 Your people will join you on your day of battle.
You have been dressed in holiness from birth;
you have the freshness of a child.
4 The Lord has made a promise
and will not change his mind.
He said, “You are a priest forever,
a priest like Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is beside you to help you.
When he becomes angry, he will crush kings.
6 He will judge those nations, filling them with dead bodies;
he will defeat rulers all over the world.
7 The king will drink from the brook on the way.
Then he will be strengthened.
22 Being respected is more important than having great riches.
To be well thought of is better than silver or gold.
2 The rich and the poor are alike
in that the Lord made them all.
3 The wise see danger ahead and avoid it,
but fools keep going and get into trouble.
4 Respecting the Lord and not being proud
will bring you wealth, honor, and life.
5 Evil people’s lives are like paths covered with thorns and traps.
People who guard themselves don’t have such problems.
6 Train children to live the right way,
and when they are old, they will not stray from it.
7 The rich rule over the poor,
and borrowers are servants to lenders.
8 Those who plan evil will receive trouble.
Their cruel anger will come to an end.
9 Generous people will be blessed,
because they share their food with the poor.
Love Your Enemies
27 “But I say to you who are listening, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who are cruel to you. 29 If anyone slaps you on one cheek, offer him the other cheek, too. If someone takes your coat, do not stop him from taking your shirt. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and when someone takes something that is yours, don’t ask for it back. 31 Do to others what you would want them to do to you.
