Psalm 92

God’s Love and Faithfulness

A psalm. A song for the Sabbath day.

It is good to praise Yahweh,
to sing praise to Your name, Most High,(A)
to declare Your faithful love in the morning
and Your faithfulness at night,(B)
with a ten-stringed harp
and the music of a lyre.(C)

For You have made me rejoice, Lord,
by what You have done;
I will shout for joy
because of the works of Your hands.(D)
How magnificent are Your works, Lord,
how profound Your thoughts!(E)
A stupid person does not know,
a fool does not understand this:(F)
though the wicked sprout like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they will be eternally destroyed.(G)
But You, Lord, are exalted forever.(H)
For indeed, Lord, Your enemies—
indeed, Your enemies will perish;
all evildoers will be scattered.(I)
10 You have lifted up my horn(J)
like that of a wild ox;
I have been anointed[a] with oil.(K)
11 My eyes look down on my enemies;
my ears hear evildoers when they attack me.(L)

12 The righteous thrive like a palm tree
and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon.(M)
13 Planted in the house of the Lord,
they thrive in the courts of our God.(N)
14 They will still bear fruit in old age,
healthy and green,(O)
15 to declare: “The Lord is just;
He is my rock,
and there is no unrighteousness in Him.”(P)

Proverbs 11:23-30

23 The desire of the righteous turns out well,(A)
but the hope of the wicked leads to wrath.(B)

24 One person gives freely,
yet gains more;(C)
another withholds what is right,
only to become poor.(D)

25 A generous person will be enriched,(E)
and the one who gives a drink of water
will receive water.(F)

26 People will curse(G) anyone who hoards grain,
but a blessing will come to the one who sells it.(H)

27 The one who searches for what is good(I) finds favor,
but if someone looks for trouble, it will come to him.(J)

28 Anyone trusting in his riches will fall,(K)
but the righteous will flourish like foliage.(L)

29 The one who brings ruin on his household(M)
will inherit the wind,(N)
and a fool will be a slave
to someone whose heart is wise.

30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,(O)
but violence[a] takes lives.

Matthew 13:10-17

Why Jesus Used Parables

10 Then the disciples(A) came up and asked Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?”(B)

11 He answered them, “Because the secrets of the kingdom of heaven have been given for you to know,(C) but it has not been given to them. 12 For whoever has, more will be given to him, and he will have more than enough. But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.(D) 13 For this reason I speak to them in parables, because looking they do not see,(E) and hearing they do not listen or understand.(F) 14 Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says:

You will listen and listen,
yet never understand;
and you will look and look,
yet never perceive.(G)
15 For this people’s heart has grown callous;
their ears are hard of hearing,
and they have shut their eyes;
otherwise they might see with their eyes
and hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn back—
and I would cure them.(H)[a]

16 “But your eyes are blessed(I) because they do see, and your ears because they do hear!(J) 17 For I assure you: Many prophets and righteous people longed to see the things you see yet didn’t see them; to hear the things you hear yet didn’t hear them.(K)
