Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)

⁴⁶ And Mary said, My soul does magnify the Lord, ⁴⁷ and my spirit rejoices in God my saviour. ⁴⁸ For he has looked on the poor degree of his handmaiden. Behold, now from henceforth all generations will call me blessed. ⁴⁹ For he who is mighty has done great things unto me, and holy is his name. ⁵⁰ And his mercy is on them who fear him, throughout all generations. ⁵¹ He shows strength with his arm. He scatters those who are proud in the imagination of their hearts. ⁵² He puts down the mighty from their seats and exalts those of low degree. ⁵³ He fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich away empty. ⁵⁴ He remembers mercy and helps his servant Israel, ⁵⁵ even as he promised to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever.

⁷ Be patient therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waits for the precious fruit of the earth, and has long patience for it, until it receives the early and the latter rain. ⁸ You also, be patient therefore, and settle your hearts. For the coming of the Lord draws near.

⁹ Do not grudge against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the judge stands before the door.

¹⁰ Take, my brethren, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord for an example of suffering adversity, and of long patience.

² When John, being in prison, heard about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples ³ and asked him, Are you he that was to come, or should we look for another? ⁴ Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John what you have heard and seen: ⁵ the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise up again, and the glad tidings are preached to the poor. ⁶ And blessed is the person who is not offended by me.

⁷ And as they departed, Jesus began to speak to the people about John: What did you go out into the wilderness to see? Did you go to see a reed shaken with the wind? ⁸ Or what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. ⁹ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written: Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.

¹¹ Truly I say to you, among the children of women none greater than John the Baptist has arisen. Notwithstanding, he who is less in the kingdom of heaven, is greater than he.
