2 Samuel 21-22

David Gives Saul’s Sons to the Gibeonites

21 And there was (A)a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and (B)David sought the presence of Yahweh. And Yahweh said, “It is for Saul and his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.” So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them (now the Gibeonites were not of the sons of Israel but of the remnant of the Amorites, and (C)the sons of Israel [a]made a covenant with them, but Saul had sought to strike them down in his zeal for the sons of Israel and Judah). Thus David said to the Gibeonites, “What should I do for you? And how can I make atonement that you may bless (D)the inheritance of Yahweh?” Then the Gibeonites said to him, “(E)We have no concern of silver or gold with Saul or his house, nor is it for us to put any man to death in Israel.” And he said, “I will do for you whatever you say.” So they said to the king, “(F)The man who consumed us and who planned [b]to eradicate us from standing within any border of Israel, let seven men from his sons be given to us, and we will [c]hang them (G)before Yahweh in Gibeah of Saul, (H)the chosen of Yahweh.” And the king said, “I will give them.”

But the king spared (I)Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, (J)because of the oath of Yahweh which was between them, between David and Saul’s son Jonathan. So the king took the two sons of (K)Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, Armoni and Mephibosheth whom she had borne to Saul, and the five sons of [d](L)Merab the daughter of Saul, whom she had borne to Adriel the son of Barzillai the (M)Meholathite. Then he gave them into the hand of the Gibeonites, and they [e]hanged them in the mountain before Yahweh, so that the seven of them fell together; and they were put to death in the first days of harvest at (N)the beginning of barley harvest.

10 (O)And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it for herself on the rock, from the beginning of harvest until [f]it rained on them from the sky; and (P)she [g]allowed neither the birds of the sky to rest on them by day nor the beasts of the field by night. 11 Then it was told to David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done. 12 So David went and took (Q)the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the open square of (R)Beth-shan, (S)where the Philistines had hanged them on the day (T)the Philistines struck down Saul in Gilboa. 13 And he brought up the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from there, and they gathered the bones of those who had been [h]hanged. 14 Then they buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the land of Benjamin in (U)Zela, in the grave of Kish his father; thus they did all that the king commanded, and afterwards (V)God was moved by the entreaty for the land.

War with the Philistines

15 And (W)the Philistines were at war again with Israel, so David went down and his servants with him; and as they fought against the Philistines, David became weary. 16 Then Ishbi-benob, who was (X)among those born to the [i]giants, the weight of whose spear was [j]three hundred shekels of bronze in weight, [k]was girded with a new sword, and he [l]intended to strike down David. 17 But (Y)Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and struck the Philistine and put him to death. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, “(Z)You shall not go out again with us to battle, so that you do not extinguish (AA)the lamp of Israel.”

18 (AB)Now it happened afterwards that there was war again with the Philistines at Gob; then (AC)Sibbecai the Hushathite struck down Saph, who was among those born to the [m]giants. 19 There was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite struck down [n]Goliath the Gittite, (AD)the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam. 20 Then there was war at Gath again, and there was a man of great stature who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also had been born (AE)to the [o]giants. 21 And he [p]reproached Israel, so Jonathan the son of Shimei, David’s brother, struck him down. 22 (AF)These four were born to the [q]giants in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

David’s Song of Deliverance

22 (AG)And David spoke to Yahweh (AH)the words of this song in the day that Yahweh delivered him from the [r]hand of all his enemies and from the [s]hand of Saul. He said,

(AI)Yahweh is my [t]rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
[u](AJ)My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
My (AK)shield and (AL)the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and (AM)my refuge;
My savior, You save me from violence.
I call upon Yahweh, (AN)who is worthy to be praised,
And I am saved from my enemies.
For (AO)the waves of death encompassed me;
(AP)The torrents of [v]vileness terrorized me;
(AQ)The cords of Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
(AR)In my distress I called upon Yahweh,
And I called to my God;
And out of His temple He heard my voice,
And my cry for help came into His ears.
Then (AS)the earth shook and quaked;
(AT)The foundations of heaven were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
Smoke went up [w]out of His nostrils,
(AU)And fire from His mouth devoured;
(AV)Coals were kindled by it.
10 He bowed the heavens and came down
With (AW)thick darkness under His feet.
11 (AX)He rode on a cherub and flew;
And He [x]appeared upon (AY)the wings of the wind.
12 (AZ)And He made darkness [y]canopies around Him,
A mass of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
13 From the brightness before Him
(BA)Coals of fire were kindled.
14 (BB)Yahweh thundered from heaven,
And the Most High gave forth His voice.
15 (BC)And He sent out arrows, and scattered them,
Lightning, and [z]threw them into confusion.
16 Then the channels of the sea appeared,
The foundations of the world were [aa]laid bare
By the rebuke of Yahweh,
(BD)At the blast of the breath of His nostrils.
17 (BE)He sent from on high, He took me;
(BF)He drew me out of many waters.
18 He delivered me from my strong enemy,
From those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
19 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
(BG)But Yahweh was my support.
20 (BH)He brought me forth also into a broad place;
He rescued me, (BI)because He delighted in me.
21 (BJ)Yahweh has rewarded me according to my righteousness;
(BK)According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
22 (BL)For I have kept the ways of Yahweh,
And have not wickedly departed from my God.
23 (BM)For all His [ab]judgments were before me,
And as for His statutes, I did not depart from [ac]them.
24 (BN)I was also [ad]blameless toward Him,
And I kept myself from my iniquity.
25 (BO)Therefore Yahweh has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
According to my cleanness before His eyes.
26 (BP)With the [ae]kind You show Yourself [af]kind,
With the [ag]blameless You show Yourself [ah]blameless;
27 (BQ)With the pure You show Yourself pure,
(BR)And with the crooked You show Yourself [ai]astute.
28 (BS)And You save an afflicted people;
(BT)But Your eyes are on the haughty whom You bring down.
29 (BU)For You are my lamp, O Yahweh;
And Yahweh illumines my darkness.
30 (BV)For by You I can [aj]run upon a troop;
By my God I can leap over a wall.
31 (BW)As for God, His way is [ak]blameless;
(BX)The word of Yahweh is [al]tried;
(BY)He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
32 (BZ)For who is God, but Yahweh?
(CA)And who is a rock, but our God?
33 (CB)God is my strong fortress;
And He [am]sets the [an]blameless in [ao]His way.
34 (CC)He makes [ap]my feet like hinds’ feet,
(CD)And sets me on my high places.
35 (CE)He trains my hands for battle,
(CF)So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
36 You have also given me (CG)the shield of Your salvation,
And Your answer to me makes me great.
37 (CH)You enlarge my steps under me,
And my ankles have not given way.
38 I pursued my enemies and (CI)destroyed them,
And I did not turn back until they were consumed.
39 And I have consumed them and crushed them, so that they did not rise;
And (CJ)they fell under my feet.
40 For You have girded me with strength for battle;
You have [aq]subdued under me (CK)those who rose up against me.
41 [ar]You have also (CL)made my enemies turn their backs to me,
And I [as]destroyed those who hated me.
42 (CM)They looked, but there was none to save;
(CN)Even to Yahweh, but He did not answer them.
43 (CO)Then I beat them fine as the dust of the earth;
(CP)I pulverized and stamped them as the mire of the streets.
44 (CQ)You have also delivered me from the contentions of my people;
(CR)You have kept me as head of the nations;
(CS)A people whom I have not known serve me.
45 (CT)Foreigners cower before me;
As soon as they hear, they obey me.
46 Foreigners fade away,
(CU)And [at]come trembling out of their [au]fortresses.
47 Yahweh lives, and blessed be my rock;
And let [av](CV)God, the rock of my salvation, be lifted high,
48 (CW)The God who executes vengeance for me,
(CX)And brings down peoples under me,
49 Who also brings me out from my enemies;
You even lift me above (CY)those who rise up against me;
(CZ)You rescue me from the violent man.
50 (DA)Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Yahweh, among the nations,
And I will sing praises to Your name.
51 (DB)He [aw]gives great salvation to His king,
And (DC)shows lovingkindness to His anointed,
(DD)To David and his seed forever.”

Luke 18:24-43

24 And Jesus looked at him and said, (A)How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For (B)it is easier for a camel to [a]go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But He said, (C)The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”

28 And Peter said, “Behold, (D)we have left all that is our own and followed You.” 29 And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, (E)there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times more at this time and in (F)the age to come, eternal life.”

31 (G)But when He took the twelve aside, He said to them, “Behold, (H)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (I)all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be [b]completed. 32 (J)For He will be [c]delivered over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon, 33 and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him, and the third day He will rise again.” 34 But (K)the disciples understood none of these things, and this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.

Bartimaeus Regains His Sight

35 (L)Now it happened that as [d](M)Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. 36 Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was. 37 They reported to him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 And he called out, saying, “Jesus, (N)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 And those who went ahead were rebuking him so that he would be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “(O)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him, and when he came near, He questioned him, 41 “What do you want Me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to regain my sight!” 42 And Jesus said to him, [e]Receive your sight; (P)your faith has [f]saved you.” 43 Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, (Q)glorifying God. And when (R)all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.
