Samaria and Israel to Be Punished

During the time that Jotham [C ruled 758–743 bc], Ahaz [C ruled 743–727 bc], and Hezekiah [C ruled 727–698 bc] were kings of Judah, the word of the Lord came to Micah, who was from Moresheth [C a town in southern Judah]. He saw these visions about Samaria and Jerusalem.

Hear this, all you ·nations [peoples];
    listen, earth and all you who live on it.
The Lord God will ·be a witness [bring charges] against you,
    the Lord from his Holy Temple.
See, the Lord is coming out of his place;
    he is coming down to ·walk on [tread upon] the ·tops of the mountains [heights of the earth].
The mountains will melt under him,
    and the valleys will ·crack open [split apart],
like wax near a fire,
    like water running down a hillside.
All this is because of Jacob’s ·sin [rebellion; transgression],
    because of the sins of the ·nation [L house] of Israel.
What is ·the place of Jacob’s sin [L Jacob’s trangression]?
    Isn’t it Samaria [C the capital of the northern empire]?
What is Judah’s ·place of idol worship [L high place; C a pagan worship site]?
    Isn’t it Jerusalem [C Judah’s sin made the temple in Jerusalem no better than a pagan temple]?

The Lord Speaks

“So I will make Samaria a ·pile [heap] of ruins in the open country,
    a place for planting vineyards.
I will pour her stones down into the valley
    and ·strip her down to [lay bare; uncover] her foundations.
All her ·idols [carved images] will be broken into pieces;
    all the ·gifts to her idols [L prostitute’s wages] will be burned with fire.
    I will ·destroy [make desolate] all her idols,
and because Samaria ·earned her money [or gathered these things] by ·being unfaithful to me [prostituting herself],
    ·this money will be carried off by others who are not faithful to me [L to the pay of the prostitute they will return; C Samaria’s wealth earned through idolatry would now go to the pagan temples of Assyria—one prostitute’s wages going to another].”

Micah’s Great Sadness

I will ·moan and cry [mourn and wail] because of this evil,
    going around barefoot and naked.
I will ·cry loudly [wail] like ·the wild dogs [jackals]
    and ·make sad sounds [moan] like the ·owls [or ostriches] do,
because Samaria’s wound ·cannot be healed [is incurable].
    It ·will spread [or has spread] to Judah;
it ·will reach [or has reached] the city gate of my people [C where the city’s affairs were conducted],
    all the way to Jerusalem.
10 Don’t tell it in Gath [C sounds like Hebrew for “tell”; Gath and the cities in this list were in Assyria’s path of destruction in 701 bc].
    Don’t cry ·in Acco [or at all; C the Hebrew for “cry” sounds like Acco].
Roll in the dust
    at Beth Ophrah [C “house of dust”].
11 Pass on your way, naked and ashamed,
    you who live in Shaphir [C “beautiful” or “pleasant”].
Those who live in Zaanan [C sounds like Hebrew for “come out”]
    won’t come out.
The people in Beth Ezel [C “house of nearness”] ·will cry [are in mourning],
    but they will not give you any support.
12 Those who live in Maroth [C sounds like Hebrew for “sad” or “miserable”]
    ·will be anxious [hope] for good news to come,
because ·trouble [disaster] ·will [or has] come from the Lord,
    all the way to the gate of Jerusalem.
13 You people living in Lachish [C a large town in Judah; Lachish sounds like the Hebrew for “horse” or “steed”],
    harness the fastest ·horses [steeds] to the chariot.
·Jerusalem’s [L Daughter of Zion’s; C the location of the Temple] sins ·started in [began with] you;
    yes, Israel’s ·sins [transgressions; rebellion] were found in you.
14 So you must give ·farewell gifts [a dowry]
    to Moresheth in Gath.
The houses in Aczib [C “deception”] ·will be false help
    to [or have deceived/betrayed] the kings of Israel.
15 I will bring against you people who will ·take [possess; conquer] your land,
    you who live in Mareshah [C sounds like Hebrew for “conqueror”].
The ·glory [or nobles; leaders] of Israel
    will go in to Adullam [C perhaps to hide in its caves].
16 ·Cut off your hair [Shave your head; Make yourself bald; C a sign of mourning or sadness]
    for the children ·you love [in whom you delight].
Make yourself bald like the eagle,
    because your children will be taken away ·to a foreign land [in exile/captivity].

The Evil Plans of People

·How terrible it will be for people [L Woe to those] who plan wickedness,
    who lie on their beds and make evil plans.
When the morning light comes, they do what they planned,
    because they have the power to do so.
They ·want [covet] fields, so they take them;
    they ·want [covet] houses, so they ·take them away [seize them].
They ·cheat [defraud; oppress] people to get their houses;
    they rob them even of their ·property [inheritance].

That is why the Lord says:

“Look, I am planning ·trouble [disaster] against such people,
    ·and you won’t be able to save yourselves [L from which you cannot remove your necks; C like a yoke].
You will no longer walk ·proudly [arrogantly],
    because it will be a ·terrible time [time of calamity/catastrophe/evil].
·At that time [L In that day] people will ·make fun of [ridicule; sing a taunt against] you
    and ·sing this sad song [L lament with a lamentation] about you:
‘We are completely ·ruined [destroyed];
    the Lord has taken away my people’s ·land [possession; inheritance].
Yes, he has taken it away from me
    and divided our fields among ·our enemies [renegades; or the traitors]!’”
So you will have no one from the Lord’s ·people [assembly]
    to throw lots to divide the land.

Micah Is Asked Not to Prophesy

The ·prophets [or preachers] say, “Don’t ·prophesy [or preach] to us!
    Don’t ·prophesy [preach] about these things!
    ·Nothing to make us feel bad will happen [L Disgrace/Humiliation will not overtake us]!”
But I must say this, ·people [L house] of Jacob:
    ·The Lord is becoming angry [or Does not the Lord grow impatient…?] about what you have done.
·My words are welcome [or Are not my words good…?]
    to the person who ·does what is right [L walks uprightly].
But ·you are fighting against my people like an enemy [or my people have risen up against me as an enemy].
    You ·take the coats [strip off the rich robe] from people who pass by peacefully;
    ·you plan war [or …like men returning from war].
You have ·forced [cast out; evicted] the women of my people
    from their ·nice [pleasant] houses;
you have taken my glory
    from their children forever.
10 ·Get up [Arise] and leave.
    This is not your place of rest anymore.
You have made this place ·unclean [defiled],
    and it is doomed to destruction.
11 ·But you people want a false prophet
    who will tell you nothing but lies
[L If a man, coming as wind/spirit and lies,
    should lie to you…].
You want one who ·promises to prophesy good things for you
    if you give him wine and beer [or will prophesy wine and beer for you].
He’s just the prophet for you.

The Lord Promises to Rescue His People

12 “Yes, ·people of Jacob [L Jacob], I will ·bring [assemble] all of you together;
    I will bring together ·all those left alive in [the remnant of] Israel.
I will put them together like sheep in a pen,
    like a flock in its pasture;
    the place will be filled with ·many people [or a noisy crowd].
13 Someone will ·open the way [break out] and ·lead the people out [L go up before them].
    The people will break through the gate and ·leave the city where they were held captive [L go out].
Their king will ·go out in front of [pass through before] them,
    and the Lord will lead them.”

The Leaders of Israel Are Guilty of Evil

Then I said,

“Listen, leaders of ·the people of Jacob [L Jacob];
    listen, you rulers of the ·nation [L house] of Israel.
·You should [L Should you not…?] know ·how to decide cases fairly [justice],
    but you hate good and love evil.
You skin my people alive
    and tear the flesh off their bones.
You ·eat [devour] my people’s flesh
    and skin them and break their bones;
you chop them up like meat for the pot,
    like meat in a cooking pan.
Then they will cry to the Lord,
    but he won’t answer them.
At that time he will hide his face from them,
    because what they have done is evil.”

The Lord says this about the prophets who ·teach his people the wrong way of living [mislead/lead astray my people]:

“If these prophets are given food to eat,
    they shout, ‘Peace!’
But if someone doesn’t ·give them what they ask for [L place food in their mouths],
    they ·call for a holy war [declare war] against that person.
So it will become like night for them, without visions [C revelation from God will cease].
    It will become dark for them, without ·any way to tell the future [divination].
The sun is about to set for the prophets;
    their day will become dark.
The seers [C another name for prophets] will be ashamed;
    the ·people who see the future [diviners] will be ·embarrassed [disgraced; humiliated].
Yes, all of them will cover their ·mouths [or lips; or faces],
    because there will be no answer from God.”

Micah Is an Honest Prophet of God

But I am filled with power,
    with the Spirit of the Lord,
    and with justice and ·strength [might],
to ·tell the people of Jacob [L declare to Jacob] ·how they have turned against God [L his transgression],
    and ·the people of Israel [L Israel] how they have sinned.
Leaders of [L the house of] Jacob and rulers of [L the house of] Israel,
    listen to me,
you who hate ·fairness [justice]
    and ·twist [pervert; distort] what is ·right [straight].
10 You build ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple] ·by murdering people [L with bloodshed];
    you build it with ·evil [wickedness; iniquity].
11 Its ·judges take money
    to decide who wins in court [L rulers judge for a bribe].
Its priests only teach for ·pay [a price],
    and its prophets ·only look into the future when they get paid [tell fortunes/practice divination for money].
But they lean on the Lord and say,
    “The Lord is here with us,
    so ·nothing bad [no harm] will ·happen to [overtake; come upon] us.”
12 [L Therefore] Because of you,
    Jerusalem will be plowed like a field.
·The city [L Zion; v. 10] will become a ·pile of rocks [heap of rubble/ruins],
    and the ·hill [mountain] ·on which the Temple stands [L of the house] will be ·covered with bushes [an overgrown hill; wooded heights].

Revelation 11

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a ·measuring stick [C a reed or cane used for measuring] like a ·rod [staff; walking stick], and I was told, ·Go [Get up] and measure the temple of God and the altar, ·and count [or including] the people worshiping there [C probably to show God’s control and protection of his people; Ezek. 40:3, 5]. But do not measure the ·yard [courtyard] outside the temple. Leave it ·alone [out], because it has been given to ·those who are not God’s people [the Gentiles; the nations]. And they will trample on the holy city [C Jerusalem] for forty-two months [C a period of oppression—either literal or symbolic—equal to three and a half years; see Dan. 7:25; 12:7, 11–12]. And I will ·give power to [or appoint; L give to] my two witnesses to prophesy for one thousand two hundred sixty days [C 42 months reckoned as 30 days each], ·and they will be dressed in rough cloth to show their sadness [L dressed in sackcloth; C mourning clothes].”

These two witnesses are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth [C reminiscent of Zerubbabel and Joshua whom God used to build the second temple in spite of opposition; Zech. 4:2–6]. And if anyone ·tries [wants] to ·hurt [harm; damage] them, fire comes from their mouths and ·kills [consumes; devours] their enemies [Jer. 5:14]. And if anyone ·tries [wants] to ·hurt [harm; damage] them in whatever way, in that same way that person ·will [or must] die. These witnesses have the ·power [authority] to ·stop the sky [close the heavens] from raining during the time they are prophesying [1 Kin. 17:1]. And they have ·power [authority] to make the waters become blood [8:8; 16:3–4; Ex. 7:17–21], and they have ·power [authority] to send every kind of ·trouble [plague] to the earth as many times as they want.

When the two witnesses have finished ·telling their message [giving their witness/testimony], the beast [C probably the Antichrist; 13:1; 17:8; Dan. 7] that comes up from the ·bottomless pit [Abyss; 9:1] will fight a war against them. He will ·defeat [conquer] them and kill them. The ·bodies [corpses] of the two witnesses will lie in the ·street [public square; C to be left unburied as a sign of disdain] of the great city where the Lord was ·killed [L crucified; C Jerusalem, perhaps here symbolic of the world’s opposition to God]. ·This city is named Sodom and Egypt, which has a spiritual meaning [L …which is figuratively/symbolically/spiritually called Sodom and Egypt; C Jerusalem is symbolically named after places judged by God for wickedness (Sodom) and for oppressing God’s people (Egypt); Gen. 19; Ex. 7—12]. Those from every race of people, tribe, language, and nation will look at the bodies of the two witnesses for three and one-half days, and they will ·refuse to bury them [L not let them be placed in a tomb]. 10 People who live on the earth will rejoice and ·be happy [celebrate] because these two are dead. They will send each other gifts, because these two prophets brought much ·suffering [torment] to those who live on the earth.

11 But after [L the] three and one-half days, ·God put the breath of life into the two prophets again [L a breath/spirit of life from God entered them; Gen. 2:7]. They stood on their feet, and everyone who saw them became very afraid. 12 Then the two prophets heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Come up here!” And they went up into heaven in a cloud as their enemies watched.

13 In the same hour there was a ·great [violent] earthquake, and a tenth of the city ·was destroyed [collapsed; L fell]. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and those who did not die were very afraid and gave glory to the God of heaven [Ezek. 38:19–20; Zech. 14:4].

14 The second ·trouble [L woe] is finished. ·Pay attention [Look; T Behold]: The third ·trouble [L woe] is coming ·soon [quickly; 8:13].

The Seventh Trumpet

15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet. And there were loud voices in heaven, saying:

“·The power to rule the world now belongs to [or The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of] our Lord and his Christ [C Greek for Messiah or Anointed One],
    and he will ·rule [reign] forever and ever [2 Sam. 7:16; Dan. 7:14, 18; Luke 1:32–33].”

16 Then the twenty-four elders [4:4], who sit on their thrones before God, ·bowed down [fell] on their faces and worshiped God. 17 They said:

“We give thanks to you, Lord God ·Almighty [All-powerful],
    [the One] who is and [the One] who was [C in contrast with 1:4, 8; 4:8, this lacks the future reference, “who is coming,” because here God has commenced his future reign],
because you have ·used [or taken; or received] your great power
    and have begun to rule!
18 The ·people of the world [nations; Gentiles] were angry [Ps. 2:1],
    but your ·anger [wrath] has come.
The time has come to judge the dead [Dan. 12:2],
    and to reward your servants the prophets
and your ·holy people [T saints],
    ·all who respect you [L those who fear your name], small and great.
The time has come to destroy those who destroy the earth!”

19 Then God’s temple in heaven was opened. The ·Ark that holds the agreement God gave to his people [L Ark of his Covenant] could be seen in his temple. Then there were flashes of lightning, ·noises, thunder [rumbling thunder], an earthquake, and a great hailstorm [C typical accompaniments to the arrival of God; 4:5].
