Old/New Testament
The Generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth
10 Now these are the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and sons were born to them after the flood.
2 (A)The sons of Japheth were (B)Gomer and Magog and (C)Madai and (D)Javan and Tubal and (E)Meshech and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer were (F)Ashkenaz and [a]Riphath and (G)Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan were Elishah and (H)Tarshish, Kittim and [b]Dodanim. 5 From these the coastlands of the nations [c]were separated into their lands, every one according to his tongue, according to their families, into their nations.
6 (I)The sons of Ham were Cush and [d]Mizraim and Put and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush were (J)Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and (K)Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were (L)Sheba and (M)Dedan. 8 Now Cush [e]was the father of Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before Yahweh; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before Yahweh.” 10 The beginning of his kingdom was [f](N)Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of (O)Shinar. 11 From that land he went out (P)to Assyria and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. 13 Mizraim [g]was the father of (Q)Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim 14 and (R)Pathrusim and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines) and Caphtorim.
15 Canaan [h]was the father of (S)Sidon, his firstborn, and (T)Heth 16 and (U)the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite 17 and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite 18 and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were scattered. 19 (V)The border of the Canaanite [i]extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward (W)Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their tongues, by their lands, by their nations.
21 Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the [j]older brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 (X)The sons of Shem were (Y)Elam and Asshur and (Z)Arpachshad and (AA)Lud and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were (AB)Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash. 24 Arpachshad [k]was the father of (AC)Shelah; and Shelah [l]was the father of Eber. 25 (AD)Now two sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was [m]Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 And Joktan [n]was the father of Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah 27 and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah 28 and [o]Obal and Abimael and Sheba 29 and Ophir and Havilah and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan.
30 Now their [p]settlement [q]extended from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the hill country of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their tongues, by their lands, according to their nations.
32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, by their nations; and (AE)out of these the nations were separated on the earth after the flood.
The Tower of Babel
11 Now the whole earth [r]had the same language and [s]the same words. 2 And it happened as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land (AF)of Shinar and [t]settled there. 3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and they had (AG)tar for mortar. 4 And they said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top (AH)will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves (AI)a name, lest we (AJ)be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” 5 (AK)Then Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And Yahweh said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have [u](AL)the same language. And this is what they have begun to do. So now nothing which they purpose to do will be [v]impossible for them. 7 Come, (AM)let Us go down and there (AN)confuse their [w]language, so that they will not understand one another’s [x]language.” 8 So Yahweh (AO)scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called [y](AP)Babel, because there Yahweh confused the [z]language of the whole earth; and from there Yahweh scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
The Generations of Shem
10 (AQ)These are the generations of Shem. Shem was 100 years old and [aa]became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood; 11 and Shem lived 500 years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he became the father of other sons and daughters.
12 And Arpachshad lived 35 years and became the father of Shelah; 13 and Arpachshad lived 403 years after he became the father of Shelah, and he became the father of other sons and daughters.
14 And Shelah lived 30 years and became the father of Eber; 15 and Shelah lived 403 years after he became the father of Eber, and he became the father of other sons and daughters.
16 And Eber lived 34 years and became the father of Peleg; 17 and Eber lived 430 years after he became the father of Peleg, and he became the father of other sons and daughters.
18 And Peleg lived 30 years and became the father of Reu; 19 and Peleg lived 209 years after he became the father of Reu, and he became the father of other sons and daughters.
20 And Reu lived 32 years and became the father of Serug; 21 and Reu lived 207 years after he became the father of Serug, and he became the father of other sons and daughters.
22 And Serug lived 30 years and became the father of Nahor; 23 and Serug lived 200 years after he became the father of Nahor, and he became the father of other sons and daughters.
24 Nahor lived 29 years and became the father of (AR)Terah; 25 and Nahor lived 119 years after he became the father of Terah, and he became the father of other sons and daughters.
26 And Terah lived 70 years and became (AS)the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
The Generations of Terah
27 Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and (AT)Haran became the father of (AU)Lot. 28 And Haran died [ab]in the presence of Terah his father in the land of his birth, in (AV)Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 Abram and (AW)Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was (AX)Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was (AY)Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. 30 (AZ)And Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out [ac]together from (BA)Ur of the Chaldeans in order to go to the land of Canaan; and they came as far as Haran and [ad]settled there. 32 And the days of Terah were 205 years; and Terah died in Haran.
Yahweh Appears to Abram
12 And (BB)Yahweh said to Abram,
“[ae]Go forth from your land,
And from your kin
And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;
2 And (BC)I will make you a great nation,
And (BD)I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And so [af](BE)you shall be a blessing;
3 And (BF)I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who [ag]curses you I will [ah]curse.
(BG)And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
4 So Abram went forth as Yahweh had spoken to him; and (BH)Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 So Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their (BI)possessions which they had accumulated, and (BJ)the [ai]persons which they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go forth to the land of Canaan; (BK)thus they came to the land of Canaan. 6 And Abram passed through the land as far as the site of (BL)Shechem, to the [aj]oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanite was then in the land. 7 Then Yahweh (BM)appeared to Abram and said, “(BN)To your seed I will give this land.” So he built (BO)an altar there to Yahweh who had appeared to him. 8 Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with (BP)Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to Yahweh and (BQ)called upon the name of Yahweh. 9 And Abram journeyed on, continuing toward (BR)the [ak]Negev.
Abram and Sarai in Egypt
10 Now there was (BS)a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was (BT)severe in the land. 11 And it happened as he drew near to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Now behold, I know that you are a woman (BU)beautiful in appearance; 12 (BV)and it will be when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Please say that you are (BW)my sister so that it may go well with me because of you, and that [al](BX)I may live on account of you.” 14 Now it happened when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians [am]saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 And Pharaoh’s officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and (BY)the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16 Therefore (BZ)he treated Abram well because of her; and sheep and oxen and donkeys and male and female servants and female donkeys and camels [an](CA)came into his possession.
17 But Yahweh (CB)struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, “(CC)What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for myself as a wife? So now, [ao]here is your wife, take her and go.” 20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they [ap]sent him away with his wife and all that belonged to him.
The Temptation of Jesus
4 (A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (B)to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had (C)fasted forty days and forty nights, He [a]then became hungry. 3 And (D)the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the (E)Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘(F)Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil *took Him into (G)the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,
‘(H)He will command His angels concerning You’;
and
‘On their hands they will bear You up,
Lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘(I)You shall not put the [b]Lord your God to the test.’”
8 (J)Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; 9 and he said to Him, “(K)All these things I will give You, if You fall down and [c]worship me.” 10 Then Jesus *said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘(L)You shall worship the [d]Lord your God, and [e]serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, (M)angels came and began to minister to Him.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
12 Now when Jesus heard that (N)John had been taken into custody, (O)He departed into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and (P)lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled, saying,
15 “(Q)The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
[f]By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the [g]Gentiles—
16 (R)The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light,
And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,
Upon them a Light dawned.”
17 (S)From that time Jesus began to [h]preach and say, “(T)Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
The First Disciples
18 (U)Now as Jesus was walking by (V)the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, (W)Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He *said to them, “[i]Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 And immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 And going on from there He saw two other brothers, [j](X)James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 And immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
Ministry in Galilee
23 And Jesus was going (Y)throughout all Galilee, (Z)teaching in their synagogues and (AA)preaching the [k]gospel of the kingdom, and (AB)healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.
24 And the news about Him spread (AC)throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, (AD)demoniacs, [l](AE)epileptics, (AF)paralytics; and He healed them. 25 And large crowds (AG)followed Him from Galilee and (AH)the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from (AI)beyond the Jordan.
