Ezekiel 27-29

27 Yahweh’s word came again to me, saying, “You, son of man, take up a lamentation over Tyre; and tell Tyre, ‘You who dwell at the entry of the sea, who are the merchant of the peoples to many islands, the Lord Yahweh says:

“You, Tyre, have said,
    ‘I am perfect in beauty.’
Your borders are in the heart of the seas.
Your builders have perfected your beauty.
They have made all your planks of cypress trees from Senir.
They have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
They have made your oars of the oaks of Bashan.
They have made your benches of ivory inlaid in cypress wood from the islands of Kittim.
Your sail was of fine linen with embroidered work from Egypt,
that it might be to you for a banner.
Blue and purple from the islands of Elishah was your awning.
The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers.
Your wise men, Tyre, were in you.
    They were your pilots.
The old men of Gebal
and its wise men were your repairers of ship seams in you.
All the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you
    to deal in your merchandise.

10 “‘“Persia, Lud, and Put were in your army,
    your men of war.
They hung the shield and helmet in you.
    They showed your beauty.
11 The men of Arvad with your army were on your walls all around,
and valiant men were in your towers.
They hung their shields on your walls all around.
    They have perfected your beauty.

12 “‘“Tarshish was your merchant by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches. They traded for your wares with silver, iron, tin, and lead.

13 “‘“Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your traders. They traded the persons of men and vessels of bronze for your merchandise.

14 “‘“They of the house of Togarmah traded for your wares with horses, war horses, and mules.

15 “‘“The men of Dedan traded with you. Many islands were the market of your hand. They brought you horns of ivory and ebony in exchange.

16 “‘“Syria was your merchant by reason of the multitude of your handiworks. They traded for your wares with emeralds, purple, embroidered work, fine linen, coral, and rubies.

17 “‘“Judah and the land of Israel were your traders. They traded wheat of Minnith, confections, honey, oil, and balm for your merchandise.

18 “‘“Damascus was your merchant for the multitude of your handiworks by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches, with the wine of Helbon, and white wool.

19 “‘“Vedan and Javan traded with yarn for your wares; wrought iron, cassia, and calamus were among your merchandise.

20 “‘“Dedan was your merchant in precious saddle blankets for riding.

21 “‘“Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your favorite dealers in lambs, rams, and goats. In these, they were your merchants.

22 “‘“The traders of Sheba and Raamah were your traders. They traded for your wares with the best of all spices, all precious stones, and gold.

23 “‘“Haran, Canneh, Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur and Chilmad, were your traders. 24 These were your traders in choice wares, in wrappings of blue and embroidered work, and in cedar chests of rich clothing bound with cords, among your merchandise.

25 “‘“The ships of Tarshish were your caravans for your merchandise.
    You were replenished
and made very glorious in the heart of the seas.
26 Your rowers have brought you into great waters.
The east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas.
27 Your riches, your wares, your merchandise,
your mariners, your pilots, your repairers of ship seams,
the dealers in your merchandise,
and all your men of war who are in you,
with all your company which is among you,
will fall into the heart of the seas in the day of your ruin.
28 At the sound of the cry of your pilots,
    the pasture lands will shake.
29 All who handle the oars,
the mariners and all the pilots of the sea,
will come down from their ships.
They will stand on the land,
30     and will cause their voice to be heard over you,
    and will cry bitterly.
They will cast up dust on their heads.
They will wallow in the ashes.
31 They will make themselves bald for you,
    and clothe themselves with sackcloth.
They will weep for you in bitterness of soul,
    with bitter mourning.
32 In their wailing they will take up a lamentation for you,
    and lament over you, saying,
‘Who is there like Tyre,
like her who is brought to silence in the middle of the sea?’
33 When your wares came from the seas,
    you filled many peoples.
You enriched the kings of the earth
with the multitude of your riches and of your merchandise.
34 In the time that you were broken by the seas,
in the depths of the waters,
your merchandise and all your company fell within you.
35 All the inhabitants of the islands are astonished at you,
and their kings are horribly afraid.
They are troubled in their face.
36 The merchants among the peoples hiss at you.
You have come to a terrible end,
and you will be no more.”’”

28 Yahweh’s word came again to me, saying, “Son of man, tell the prince of Tyre, ‘The Lord Yahweh says:

“Because your heart is lifted up,
and you have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of God,
in the middle of the seas;’
yet you are man,
    and no god,
though you set your heart as the heart of a god—
behold, you are wiser than Daniel.
There is no secret that is hidden from you.
By your wisdom and by your understanding you have gotten yourself riches,
and have gotten gold and silver into your treasuries.
By your great wisdom
and by your trading you have increased your riches,
and your heart is lifted up because of your riches—”

“‘therefore the Lord Yahweh says:

“Because you have set your heart as the heart of God,
therefore, behold, I will bring strangers on you,
    the terrible of the nations.
They will draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom.
    They will defile your brightness.
They will bring you down to the pit.
You will die the death of those who are slain
in the heart of the seas.
Will you yet say before him who kills you, ‘I am God’?
But you are man, and not God,
in the hand of him who wounds you.
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised
    by the hand of strangers;
for I have spoken it,” says the Lord Yahweh.’”

11 Moreover Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and tell him, ‘The Lord Yahweh says:

“You were the seal of full measure,
    full of wisdom,
    and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden,
    the garden of God.
Every precious stone adorned you:
    ruby, topaz, emerald,
    chrysolite, onyx, jasper,
    sapphire,[a] turquoise, and beryl.
Gold work of tambourines
and of pipes was in you.
They were prepared in the day that you were created.
14 You were the anointed cherub who covers.
Then I set you up on the holy mountain of God.
You have walked up and down in the middle of the stones of fire.
15 You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created,
until unrighteousness was found in you.
16 By the abundance of your commerce, your insides were filled with violence,
    and you have sinned.
Therefore I have cast you as profane out of God’s mountain.
I have destroyed you, covering cherub,
from the middle of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty.
You have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I have cast you to the ground.
I have laid you before kings,
    that they may see you.
18 By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your commerce,
    you have profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought out a fire from the middle of you.
    It has devoured you.
I have turned you to ashes on the earth
in the sight of all those who see you.
19 All those who know you among the peoples will be astonished at you.
    You have become a terror,
and you will exist no more.”’”

20 Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, set your face toward Sidon, and prophesy against it, 22 and say, ‘The Lord Yahweh says:

“Behold, I am against you, Sidon.
I will be glorified among you.
Then they will know that I am Yahweh,
when I have executed judgments in her,
    and am sanctified in her.
23 For I will send pestilence into her,
    and blood into her streets.
The wounded will fall within her,
with the sword on her on every side.
Then they will know that I am Yahweh.

24 “‘“There will no longer be a pricking brier to the house of Israel, nor a hurting thorn of any that are around them that scorned them. Then they will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.”

25 “‘The Lord Yahweh says: “When I have gathered the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and am shown as holy among them in the sight of the nations, then they will dwell in their own land which I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 They will dwell in it securely. Yes, they will build houses, plant vineyards, and will dwell securely when I have executed judgments on all those around them who have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am Yahweh their God.”’”

29 In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all Egypt. Speak and say, ‘The Lord Yahweh says:

“Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
the great monster that lies in the middle of his rivers,
that has said, ‘My river is my own,
and I have made it for myself.’
I will put hooks in your jaws,
and I will make the fish of your rivers stick to your scales.
I will bring you up out of the middle of your rivers,
with all the fish of your rivers which stick to your scales.
I’ll cast you out into the wilderness,
you and all the fish of your rivers.
You’ll fall on the open field.
You won’t be brought together or gathered.
I have given you for food to the animals of the earth
and to the birds of the sky.

“‘“All the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am Yahweh, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. When they took hold of you by your hand, you broke and tore all their shoulders. When they leaned on you, you broke and paralyzed all of their thighs.”

“‘Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: “Behold, I will bring a sword on you, and will cut off man and animal from you. The land of Egypt will be a desolation and a waste. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.

“‘“Because he has said, ‘The river is mine, and I have made it,’ 10 therefore, behold, I am against you and against your rivers. I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from the tower of Seveneh even to the border of Ethiopia. 11 No foot of man will pass through it, nor will any animal foot pass through it. It won’t be inhabited for forty years. 12 I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the middle of the countries that are desolate. Her cities among the cities that are laid waste will be a desolation forty years. I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and will disperse them through the countries.”

13 “‘For the Lord Yahweh says: “At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples where they were scattered. 14 I will reverse the captivity of Egypt, and will cause them to return into the land of Pathros, into the land of their birth. There they will be a lowly kingdom. 15 It will be the lowest of the kingdoms. It won’t lift itself up above the nations any more. I will diminish them so that they will no longer rule over the nations. 16 It will no longer be the confidence of the house of Israel, bringing iniquity to memory, when they turn to look after them. Then they will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.”’”

17 It came to pass in the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, in the first day of the month, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon caused his army to serve a great service against Tyre. Every head was made bald, and every shoulder was worn; yet he had no wages, nor did his army, from Tyre, for the service that he had served against it. 19 Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He will carry off her multitude, take her plunder, and take her prey. That will be the wages for his army. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt as his payment for which he served, because they worked for me,’ says the Lord Yahweh.

21 “In that day I will cause a horn to sprout for the house of Israel, and I will open your mouth among them. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.”

1 Peter 3

In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word, seeing your pure behavior in fear. Let your beauty come not from the outward adorning of braiding your hair, and of wearing gold ornaments or of putting on fine clothing, but from the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight. For this is how in the past the holy women who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands. So Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are if you do well and are not put in fear by any terror.

You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman as to the weaker vessel, as also being joint heirs of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

Finally, all of you be like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous, not rendering evil for evil or insult for insult; but instead blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For,

“He who would love life
    and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil
and his lips from speaking deceit.
11 Let him turn away from evil and do good.
Let him seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    and his ears open to their prayer;
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”(A)

13 Now who will harm you if you become imitators of that which is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “Don’t fear what they fear, neither be troubled.”(B) 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear, 16 having a good conscience. Thus, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ. 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, that you suffer for doing what is right than for doing evil. 18 Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit, 19 in whom he also went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 who before were disobedient when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ship was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21 This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you—not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him.
