Testing the Spirits

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit,[a] but test[b] the spirits[c] to determine[d] if they are from God, because many false prophets[e] have gone out into the world. By this[f] you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses[g] Jesus as the Christ[h] who has come in the flesh is from God, but[i] every spirit that refuses to confess[j] Jesus,[k] that spirit[l] is not from God, and this is the spirit[m] of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and now is already in the world.

You are from God, little children, and have conquered them,[n] because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world’s perspective and the world listens to them. We are from God; the person who knows God listens to us, but[o] whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this[p] we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.[q]

God is Love

Dear friends, let us love one another, because[r] love is from God, and everyone who loves[s] has been fathered[t] by God and knows God. The person who does not love does not know God, because God is love.[u] By this[v] the love of God[w] is revealed in us:[x] that God has sent his one and only[y] Son into the world so that we may live through him. 10 In this[z] is love: not that[aa] we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice[ab] for our sins.

11 Dear friends, if God so loved us, then[ac] we also ought to love one another.[ad] 12 No one has seen God at any time.[ae] If we love one another, God resides[af] in us, and his love is perfected in us.[ag] 13 By this[ah] we know that we reside in God[ai] and he in us: in that he has given us of his Spirit.[aj] 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior[ak] of the world.

15 If anyone[al] confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides[am] in him and he in God. 16 And we have come to know and to believe[an] the love that God has in us.[ao] God is love, and the one who resides[ap] in love resides in God, and God resides in him. 17 By this[aq] love is perfected with[ar] us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because just as Jesus[as] is, so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.[at] The[au] one who fears punishment[av] has not been perfected in love. 19 We love[aw] because he loved us first.

20 If anyone says[ax] “I love God” and yet[ay] hates his fellow Christian,[az] he is a liar, because the one who does not love his fellow Christian[ba] whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.[bb] 21 And the commandment we have from him is this: that[bc] the one who loves God should love his fellow Christian[bd] too. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ[be] has been fathered[bf] by God, and everyone who loves the father[bg] loves the child fathered by him.[bh] By this[bi] we know that we love the children of God: whenever we love God and obey his commandments. For[bj] this is the love of God:[bk] that we keep his commandments.[bl] And his commandments do not weigh us down, because[bm] everyone[bn] who has been fathered by God[bo] conquers[bp] the world.[bq]

Testimony About the Son

This[br] is the conquering power[bs] that has conquered[bt] the world: our faith. Now who is the person who has conquered the world except the one who believes that[bu] Jesus is the Son of God? Jesus Christ is the one who came by water and blood—not by the water only, but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because[bv] the Spirit is the truth. For[bw] there are three that testify,[bx] the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three are in agreement.

If we accept the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, because[by] this[bz] is the testimony of God that[ca] he has testified concerning his Son. 10 (The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has testified concerning his Son.)[cb] 11 And this is the testimony: God[cc] has given us eternal life,[cd] and this life is in his Son. 12 The one who has the Son[ce] has this[cf] eternal[cg] life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have this[ch] eternal[ci] life.

Assurance of Eternal Life

13 I have written these things[cj] to you who believe[ck] in the name of the Son of God so that[cl] you may know that you have eternal life.

14 And this is the confidence that we have before him: that[cm] whenever[cn] we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know[co] that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, then we know that we have the requests that we have asked from him. 16 If[cp] anyone sees his fellow Christian[cq] committing a sin not resulting in death,[cr] he should ask, and God[cs] will grant[ct] life to the person who commits a sin not resulting in death.[cu] There is a sin[cv] resulting in death.[cw] I do not say that he should ask about that. 17 All unrighteousness[cx] is sin, but there is sin not resulting in death.[cy]

18 We know that everyone fathered[cz] by God does not sin, but God[da] protects[db] the one he has fathered, and the evil one cannot touch him. 19 We know that we are from God,[dc] and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us insight to know[dd] him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This one[de] is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols.[df]
