New Testament in a Year
¶ (A)[a]And as they led him away, they caught one Simon of Cyrene, coming out of the field, and on him they laid the cross, to bear it after Jesus.
[b]And there followed him a great multitude of people, and of women, which women bewailed and lamented him.
But Jesus turned back unto them, and said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
For behold, the days will come, when men shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.
Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, (B)Fall on us: and to the hills, Cover us.
(C)For if they do these things to a [c]green tree, what shall be done to the dry?
(D)And there were two others, which were evildoers, led with him to be slain.
[d]And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the evildoers: one at the right hand, and the other at the left.
[e]Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them: for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
And the people stood, and beheld: and the rulers mocked him with them, saying, He saved others: let him save himself, if he be that Christ the [f]Chosen of God.
The soldiers also mocked him, and came and offered him vinegar,
And said, If thou be the King of the Jews, save thyself.
[g]And a superscription was also written over him, in Greek letters, and in Latin, and in Hebrew, THIS IS THAT KING OF THE JEWS.
¶ [h]And [i]one of the evildoers, which were hanged, railed on him, saying, If thou be that Christ, save thyself and us.
But the other answered, and rebuked him, saying, Fearest thou not God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
We are indeed righteously here: for we receive things worthy of that we have done: but this man hath done nothing [j]amiss.
And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me, when thou comest into thy kingdom.
Then Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, today shalt thou be with me in [k]Paradise.
¶ [l]And it was about the sixth hour: and there was a darkness over all the land, until the ninth hour.
[m]And the Sun was darkened, and the veil of the Temple rent through the midst.
And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and said, (E)Father, into thine hands I commend my spirit. And when he thus had said, he gave up the ghost.
¶ [n]Now when the Centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Of a surety this man was just.
And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done: smote their breasts, and returned.
[o]And all his acquaintances stood afar off, and the women that followed him from Galilee, beholding these things.
¶ (F)[p]And behold, there was a man named Joseph, which was a counselor, a good man and a just.
He did not consent to the counsel and deed of them, which was of Arimathea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
He went unto Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus,
And took it down, and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb hewn out of a rock, wherein was never man yet laid.
And that day was the preparation, and the Sabbath [q]drew on.
[r]And the women also that followed after, which came with him from Galilee, beheld the sepulcher, and how his body was laid.
And they returned and prepared odors, and ointments, and resteth the Sabbath day according to the commandment.
