Peter’s Denial Foretold

³¹ Then the Lord said, “Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to have you to sift you as wheat. ³² But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have repented, strengthen your brothers.”

³³ He said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You to prison and to death.”

³⁴ He said, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know Me.”

Purse, Bag, and Sword

³⁵ Then He said to them, “When I sent you without purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”

They said, “Nothing.”

³⁶ He said to them, “But now, let him who has a purse take it and also a bag. And let him who has no sword sell his garment and buy one. ³⁷ For I tell you, what is written must yet be accomplished in Me, ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’^[a] Indeed, what is written concerning Me has a fulfillment.”

³⁸ They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”

He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Prayer on the Mount of Olives^(A)

³⁹ According to His custom, He came out and went to the Mount of Olives. And His disciples followed Him. ⁴⁰ When He came there, He said to them, “Pray that you may not fall into temptation.” ⁴¹ He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, ⁴² “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me. Nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” ⁴³ An angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. ⁴⁴ And being in anguish, He prayed more earnestly. And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

⁴⁵ When He rose from prayer and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. ⁴⁶ He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you fall into temptation.”
