Deuteronomy 18

Special Privileges for Priests and Levites

(Numbers 18.8-32)

Moses said to Israel:

18 The people of the Levi tribe, including the priests, will not receive any land. Instead, they will receive part of the sacrifices that are offered to the Lord, (A) because he has promised to provide for them in this way.

When you sacrifice a bull or sheep, the priests will be given the shoulder, the jaws, and the stomach.[a] In addition, they will receive the first part of your grain harvest and part of your first batches of wine and olive oil.[b] You must also give them the first wool that is cut from your sheep each year. Give these gifts to the priests, because the Lord has chosen them and their descendants out of all the tribes of Israel to be his special servants at the place of worship.

Any Levite can leave his hometown, and go to the place where the Lord chooses to be worshiped, and then be a special servant of the Lord[c] there, just like all the other Levites. Some Levites may have money from selling family possessions, and others may not. But all Levites serving at the place of worship will receive the same amount of food from the sacrifices and gifts brought by the people.

Don't Do Disgusting Things

Moses said to Israel:

Soon you will go into the land that the Lord your God is giving you. The nations that live there do things that are disgusting to the Lord, and you must not follow their example. 10-11 (B) Don't sacrifice your son or daughter. And don't try to use any kind of magic or witchcraft to tell fortunes[d] or to cast spells or to talk with spirits of the dead.

12 The Lord is disgusted with anyone who does these things, and that's why he will help you destroy the nations that are in the land. 13 (C) Never be guilty of doing any of these disgusting things!

A Prophet like Moses

Moses said to Israel:

14 You will go in and take the land from nations that practice magic and witchcraft. But the Lord your God won't allow you to do those things. 15 (D) Instead, he will choose one of your own people to be a prophet just like me, and you must do what that prophet says. 16 You were asking for a prophet the day you were gathered at Mount Sinai[e] and said to the Lord, “Please don't let us hear your voice or see this terrible fire again—if we do, we will die!”

17 Then the Lord told me:

Moses, they have said the right thing. 18 So when I want to speak to them, I will choose one of them to be a prophet like you. I will give my message to that prophet, who will tell the people exactly what I have said. 19 (E) Since the message comes from me, anyone who doesn't obey the message will have to answer to me.

20 But if I haven't spoken, and a prophet claims to have a message from me, you must kill that prophet, and you must also kill any prophet who claims to have a message from another god.

Moses said to Israel:

21 You may be asking yourselves, “How can we tell if a prophet's message really comes from the Lord?” 22 You will know, because if the Lord says something will happen, it will happen. And if it doesn't, you will know that the prophet was falsely claiming to speak for the Lord. Don't be afraid of any prophet whose message doesn't come from the Lord.

Psalm 105

The Lord Can Be Trusted

(A) Praise the Lord
    and pray in his name!
Tell everyone
    what he has done.
Sing praises to the Lord!
    Tell about his miracles.
Celebrate and worship
his holy name
    with all your heart.

Trust the Lord
    and his mighty power.
Remember his miracles
and all his wonders
    and his fair decisions.
You belong to the family
    of Abraham, his servant;
you are his chosen ones,
    the descendants of Jacob.

The Lord is our God,
bringing justice
    everywhere on earth.
He will never forget
his agreement or his promises,
    not in thousands of years.
* (B) God made an eternal promise
10     (C) to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
11 when he said, “I'll give you
    the land of Canaan.”

12 At the time there were
only a few of us,
    and we were homeless.
13 We wandered from nation
to nation, from one country
    to another.
14 (D) God did not let anyone
    mistreat our people.
Instead he protected us
    by punishing rulers
15 and telling them,
“Don't touch my chosen leaders
    or harm my prophets!”

16 (E) God kept crops from growing
until food was scarce
    everywhere in the land.
17 (F) But he had already sent Joseph,
sold as a slave into Egypt,
18 (G) with chains of iron
    around his legs and neck.

19 Joseph remained a slave
until his own words
    had come true,
and the Lord had finished
    testing him.
20 (H) Then the king of Egypt
    set Joseph free
21 (I) and put him in charge
    of everything he owned.
22 Joseph was in command
    of the officials,
and he taught the leaders
    how to use wisdom.

23 (J) Jacob and his family
came and settled in Egypt
    as foreigners.
24 (K) They were the Lord's people,
so he let them grow stronger
    than their enemies.
25 They served the Lord,
and he made the Egyptians plan
    hateful things against them.
26 (L) God sent his servant Moses.
He also chose and sent Aaron
27     to his people in Egypt,
and they worked miracles
    and wonders there.
28 (M) Moses and Aaron obeyed God,
and he sent darkness
    to cover Egypt.
29 (N) God turned their rivers
into streams of blood,
    and the fish all died.
30 (O) Frogs were everywhere,
    even in the royal palace.
31 (P) When God gave the command,
flies and gnats
    swarmed all around.

32 (Q) In place of rain,
God sent hailstones
    and flashes of lightning.
33 He destroyed their grapevines
    and their fig trees,
and he made splinters
    of all the other trees.
34 (R) God gave the command,
and more grasshoppers came
    than could be counted.
35 They ate every green plant
and all the crops that grew
    in the land of Egypt.
36 (S) Then God took the life
    of every first-born son.

37 (T) When God led Israel from Egypt,
they took silver and gold,
and no one was left behind.
38 The Egyptians were afraid
    and gladly let them go.
39 (U) God hid them under a cloud
and guided them by fire
    during the night.

40 (V) When they asked for food,
he sent more birds
    than they could eat.
41 (W) God even split open a rock,
and streams of water
    gushed into the desert.
42 God never forgot
his sacred promise
    to his servant Abraham.

43 When the Lord rescued
his chosen people from Egypt,
    they celebrated with songs.
44 (X) The Lord gave them the land
and everything else
    the nations had worked for.
45 He did this so that his people
would obey all his laws.
    Shout praises to the Lord!

Isaiah 45

Cyrus Obeys the Lord's Commands

45 The Lord said to Cyrus, his chosen one:

I have taken hold
    of your right hand
to help you capture nations
    and remove kings from power.
City gates will open for you;
    not one will stay closed.
As I lead you,
    I will level mountains[a]
and break the iron bars
    on bronze gates of cities.

I will give you treasures
hidden in dark
    and secret places.
Then you will know that I,
the Lord God of Israel,
    have called you by name.
Cyrus, you don't even know me!
But I have called you by name
    and highly honored you[b]
because of Israel,
    my chosen servant.

Only I am the Lord!
    There are no other gods.
I have made you strong,
    though you don't know me.
Now everyone from east to west
will learn that I am the Lord.
    No other gods are real.
I create light and darkness,
happiness and sorrow.
I, the Lord, do all this.

Tell the heavens
to send down justice
    like showers of rain.
Prepare the earth
    for my saving power
to sprout and produce justice
    that I, the Lord, create.[c]

The Lord's Mighty Power

The Lord said:

(A) Israel, you have no right
    to argue with your Creator.
You are merely a clay pot
    shaped by a potter.
The clay doesn't ask,
“Why did you make me this way?
    Where are the handles?”
10 Children don't have the right
    to demand of their parents,
“What have you done
to make us what we are?”

11 I am the Lord, the Creator,
    the holy God of Israel.
Do you dare question me
about my own nation
or about what I have done?
12 I created the world
    and covered it with people;
I stretched out the sky
    and filled it with stars.
13 I have done the right thing
    by placing Cyrus in power,
and I will make the roads easy
    for him to follow.
I am the Lord All-Powerful!
    Cyrus will rebuild my city
    and set my people free
    without being paid a thing.
I, the Lord, have spoken.

The Lord Alone Can Save

14 My people, I, the Lord, promise
    that the riches of Egypt
and the treasures of Ethiopia[d]
    will belong to you.
You will force into slavery
    those tall people of Seba.[e]

They will bow down and say,
“The only true God is with you;
    there are no other gods.”
15 People of Israel,
your God is a mystery,
    though he alone can save.
16 Anyone who makes idols
will be confused
    and terribly disgraced.
17 But Israel, I, the Lord,
will always keep you safe
    and free from shame.

Everyone Is Invited

18 The Lord alone is God!
He created the heavens
    and made a world
where people can live,
instead of creating
    an empty desert.
The Lord alone is God;
    there are no others.
19 The Lord did not speak
    in a dark secret place
or command Jacob's descendants
to search for him in vain.

The Lord speaks the truth,
and this is what he says
20 to every survivor
    from every nation:
“Gather around me!
Learn how senseless it is
    to worship wooden idols
    or pray to helpless gods.

21 “Why don't you get together
    and meet me in court?
Didn't I tell you long ago
    what would happen?
I am the only God!
    There are no others.
I bring about justice,
and have the power to save.

22 “I invite the whole world
to turn to me and be saved.
I alone am God!
    No others are real.
23 (B) I have made a solemn promise,
    one that won't be broken:
Everyone will bow down
    and worship me.
24 They will admit that I alone
    can bring about justice.
Everyone who is angry with me
will be terribly ashamed
    and will turn to me.
25 I, the Lord, will give
victory and great honor
    to the people of Israel.”

Revelation 15

The Last of the Terrible Troubles

15 After this, I looked at the sky and saw something else that was strange and important. Seven angels were bringing the seven last terrible troubles. When these are ended, God will no longer be angry.

Then I saw something that looked like a glass sea mixed with fire, and people were standing on it. They were the ones who had defeated the beast and the idol and the number that tells the name of the beast. God had given them harps, (A) and they were singing the song his servant Moses and the Lamb had sung. They were singing,

“Lord God All-Powerful,
you have done great
    and marvelous things.
You are the ruler
    of all nations,
and you do what is
    right and fair.
(B) Lord, who doesn't honor
    and praise your name?
You alone are holy,
and all nations will come
    and worship you,
because you have shown
that you judge
    with fairness.”

(C) After this, I noticed something else in heaven. The sacred tent used for a temple was open. And the seven angels who were bringing the terrible troubles were coming out of it. They were dressed in robes of pure white linen and wore belts made of pure gold. One of the four living creatures gave each of the seven angels a bowl made of gold. These bowls were filled with the anger of God who lives forever and ever. (D) The temple quickly filled with smoke from the glory and power of God. No one could enter it until the seven angels had finished pouring out the seven last troubles.
