M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
Judgment upon Ahab’s House
10 Now Ahab had seventy sons in (A)Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria, to the rulers of Jezreel, the elders, and to the guardians of the children of Ahab, saying, 2 “Now, (B)when this letter comes to you, since your master’s sons are with you, [a]as well as the chariots and horses and a fortified city and the weapons, 3 select the best and [b]fittest of your master’s sons, and set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.” 4 But they feared greatly and said, “Behold, (C)the two kings did not stand before him; how then can we stand?” 5 And the one who was over the household, and he who was over the city, the elders, and the guardians of the children, sent word to Jehu, saying, “(D)We are your servants, all that you say to us we will do, we will not make any man king; do what is good in your sight.” 6 Then he wrote a letter to them a second time saying, “If you are on my side, and you will listen to my voice, take the heads of the men, your master’s sons, and come to me at Jezreel tomorrow about this time.” Now the king’s sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were rearing them. 7 When the letter came to them, they took the king’s sons and (E)slaughtered them, seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him at Jezreel. 8 When the messenger came and told him, saying, “They have brought the heads of the king’s sons,” he said, “Put them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.” 9 Now in the morning he went out and stood and said to all the people, “You are [c]innocent; behold, (F)I conspired against my master and killed him, but (G)who [d]killed all these? 10 Know then that (H)there shall fall to the earth nothing of the word of the Lord, which the Lord spoke concerning the house of Ahab, for the Lord has done (I)what He spoke [e]through His servant Elijah.” 11 So Jehu [f]killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in (J)Jezreel, and all his great men and his acquaintances and his priests, until he left him without a survivor.
12 Then he arose and departed and went to Samaria. On the way while he was at [g]Beth-eked of the shepherds, 13 (K)Jehu [h]met the [i]relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah and said, “Who are you?” And they [j]answered, “We are the [k]relatives of Ahaziah; and we have come down [l]to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen mother.” 14 He said, “Take them alive.” So they took them alive and killed them at the pit of Beth-eked, forty-two men; and he left none of them.
15 Now when he had departed from there, he [m]met (L)Jehonadab the son of (M)Rechab coming to meet him; and he [n]greeted him and said to him, “Is your heart right, as my heart is with your heart?” And Jehonadab [o]answered, “It is.” Jehu said, “If it is, (N)give me your hand.” And he gave him his hand, and he took him up to him into the chariot. 16 He said, “Come with me and (O)see my zeal for the Lord.” So [p]he made him ride in his chariot. 17 When he came to Samaria, (P)he [q]killed all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, until he had destroyed him, (Q)according to the word of the Lord which He spoke to Elijah.
Jehu Destroys Baal Worshipers
18 Then Jehu gathered all the people and said to them, “(R)Ahab served Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now, (S)summon all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers and all his priests; let no one be missing, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal; whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu did it in [r]cunning, so that he might destroy the worshipers of Baal. 20 And Jehu said, “(T)Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal.” And (U)they proclaimed it. 21 Then Jehu sent [s]throughout Israel and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who did not come. And when they went into (V)the house of Baal, the house of Baal was filled from one end to the other. 22 He said to the one who was [t]in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out garments for all the worshipers of Baal.” So he brought out garments for them. 23 Jehu went into the house of Baal with Jehonadab the son of Rechab; and he said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search and see that there is here with you none of the servants of the Lord, but only the worshipers of Baal.” 24 Then they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings.
Now Jehu had stationed for himself eighty men outside, and he had said, “(W)The one who permits any of the men whom I bring into your hands to escape [u]shall give up his life in exchange.”
25 Then it came about, as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the [v](X)guard and to the royal officers, “(Y)Go in, [w]kill them; let none come out.” And they [x]killed them with the edge of the sword; and the [y]guard and the royal officers threw them out, and went to the [z]inner room of the house of Baal. 26 They brought out the sacred (Z)pillars of the house of Baal and burned them. 27 They also broke down the sacred pillar of Baal and broke down the house of Baal, and (AA)made it a latrine to this day.
28 Thus Jehu eradicated Baal out of Israel. 29 However, (AB)as for the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel sin, from these Jehu did not depart, even the (AC)golden calves that were at Bethel and that were at Dan. 30 The Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in executing what is right in My eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in My heart, (AD)your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” 31 But Jehu [aa](AE)was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart; (AF)he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel sin.
32 In those days the (AG)Lord began to cut off portions [ab]from Israel; and (AH)Hazael [ac]defeated them throughout the territory of Israel: 33 from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites and the Reubenites and the Manassites, from (AI)Aroer, which is by the valley of the Arnon, even (AJ)Gilead and Bashan.
Jehoahaz Succeeds Jehu
34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehu and all that he did and all his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 35 And Jehu slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son became king in his place. 36 Now the [ad]time which Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.
Timothy Charged to Guard His Trust
1 Paul, (A)an apostle of (B)Christ Jesus [a](C)by the will of God, according to the promise of (D)life in Christ Jesus,
2 To (E)Timothy, my beloved [b](F)son: (G)Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 (H)I thank God, whom I (I)serve with a (J)clear conscience [c]the way my forefathers did, (K)as I constantly remember you in my [d]prayers night and day, 4 (L)longing to see you, (M)even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 [e]For I am mindful of the (N)sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and (O)your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh (P)the gift of God which is in you through (Q)the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a (R)spirit of [f]timidity, but of power and love and [g]discipline.
8 Therefore (S)do not be ashamed of the (T)testimony of our Lord or of me (U)His prisoner, but join with me in (V)suffering for the (W)gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has (X)saved us and (Y)called us with a holy (Z)calling, (AA)not according to our works, but according to His own (AB)purpose and grace which was granted us in (AC)Christ Jesus from (AD)all eternity, 10 but (AE)now has been revealed by the (AF)appearing of our Savior (AG)Christ Jesus, who (AH)abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 (AI)for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher. 12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but (AJ)I am not ashamed; for I know (AK)whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to (AL)guard what I have entrusted to Him [h]until (AM)that day. 13 [i](AN)Retain the (AO)standard of (AP)sound words (AQ)which you have heard from me, in the (AR)faith and love which are in (AS)Christ Jesus. 14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who (AT)dwells in us, the [j](AU)treasure which has been entrusted to you.
15 You are aware of the fact that all who are in [k](AV)Asia (AW)turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 The Lord grant mercy to (AX)the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and (AY)was not ashamed of my [l](AZ)chains; 17 but when he was in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me— 18 the Lord grant to him to find mercy from the Lord on (BA)that day—and you know very well what services he rendered at (BB)Ephesus.
Israel’s Unfaithfulness Condemned
2 [a]Say to your brothers, “[b]Ammi,” and to your sisters, “[c]Ruhamah.”
2 “Contend with your mother, (A)contend,
For she is (B)not my wife, and I am not her husband;
And let her put away her (C)harlotry from her face
And her adultery from between her breasts,
3 Or I will strip her (D)naked
And expose her as on the (E)day when she was born.
I will also (F)make her like a wilderness,
Make her like desert land
And slay her with (G)thirst.
4 “Also, I will have no compassion on her children,
Because they are (H)children of harlotry.
5 “For their mother has (I)played the harlot;
She who conceived them has acted shamefully.
For she said, ‘(J)I will go after my lovers,
Who (K)give me my bread and my water,
My wool and my flax, my (L)oil and my drink.’
6 “Therefore, behold, I will (M)hedge up [d]her way with (N)thorns,
And I will build [e]a wall against her so that she cannot find her (O)paths.
7 “She will (P)pursue her lovers, but she will not overtake them;
And she will seek them, but will not find them.
Then she will say, ‘(Q)I will go back to my (R)first husband,
For it was (S)better for me then than now!’
8 “For she does (T)not know that it was (U)I who gave her the grain, the new wine and the oil,
And lavished on her silver and gold,
Which they [f]used for Baal.
9 “Therefore, I will (V)take back My grain at [g]harvest time
And My new wine in its season.
I will also take away My wool and My flax
Given to cover her nakedness.
10 “And then I will (W)uncover her lewdness
In the sight of her lovers,
And no one will rescue her out of My hand.
11 “I will also (X)put an end to all her gaiety,
Her (Y)feasts, her (Z)new moons, her sabbaths
And all her festal assemblies.
12 “I will (AA)destroy her vines and fig trees,
Of which she said, ‘These are my wages
Which my lovers have given me.’
And I will (AB)make them a forest,
And the (AC)beasts of the field will devour them.
13 “I will punish her for the (AD)days of the Baals
When she used to [h](AE)offer sacrifices to them
And (AF)adorn herself with her [i]earrings and jewelry,
And follow her lovers, so that she (AG)forgot Me,” declares the Lord.
Restoration of Israel
14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
(AH)Bring her into the wilderness
And speak [j]kindly to her.
15 “Then I will give her her (AI)vineyards from there,
And (AJ)the valley of Achor as a door of hope.
And she will [k](AK)sing there as in the days of her youth,
As in the (AL)day when she came up from the land of Egypt.
16 “It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord,
“That you will call Me [l](AM)Ishi
And will no longer call Me [m]Baali.
17 “For (AN)I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth,
So that they will be [n]mentioned by their names no more.
18 “In that day I will also make a covenant for them
With the (AO)beasts of the field,
The birds of the sky
And the creeping things of the ground.
And I will [o](AP)abolish the bow, the sword and war from the land,
And will make them (AQ)lie down in safety.
19 “I will (AR)betroth you to Me forever;
Yes, I will betroth you to Me in (AS)righteousness and in justice,
In lovingkindness and in compassion,
20 And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.
Then you will (AT)know the Lord.
21 “It will come about in that day that (AU)I will respond,” declares the Lord.
“I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth,
22 And the (AV)earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine and to the oil,
And they will respond to [p]Jezreel.
23 “I will (AW)sow her for Myself in the land.
(AX)I will also have compassion on [q]her who had not obtained compassion,
And (AY)I will say to [r]those who were (AZ)not My people,
‘You are My people!’
And [s]they will say, ‘You are my God!’”
Mem.
97 O how I (A)love Your law!
It is my (B)meditation all the day.
98 Your (C)commandments make me wiser than my enemies,
For they are ever [a]mine.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
For Your testimonies are my (D)meditation.
100 I understand (E)more than the aged,
Because I have (F)observed Your precepts.
101 I have (G)restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not (H)turned aside from Your ordinances,
For You Yourself have taught me.
103 How (I)sweet are Your [b]words to my [c]taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 From Your precepts I (J)get understanding;
Therefore I (K)hate every false way.
Nun.
105 Your word is a (L)lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.
106 I have (M)sworn and I will confirm it,
That I will keep Your righteous ordinances.
107 I am exceedingly (N)afflicted;
[d](O)Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.
108 O accept the (P)freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord,
And (Q)teach me Your ordinances.
109 My [e](R)life is continually [f]in my hand,
Yet I do not (S)forget Your law.
110 The wicked have (T)laid a snare for me,
Yet I have not (U)gone astray from Your precepts.
111 I have (V)inherited Your testimonies forever,
For they are the (W)joy of my heart.
112 I have (X)inclined my heart to perform Your statutes
Forever, even (Y)to the end.
Samekh.
113 I hate those who are (Z)double-minded,
But I love Your (AA)law.
114 You are my (AB)hiding place and my (AC)shield;
I [g](AD)wait for Your word.
115 (AE)Depart from me, evildoers,
That I may (AF)observe the commandments of my God.
116 (AG)Sustain me according to Your [h]word, that I may live;
And (AH)do not let me be [i]ashamed of my hope.
117 Uphold me that I may be (AI)safe,
That I may (AJ)have regard for Your statutes continually.
118 You have [j]rejected all those (AK)who wander from Your statutes,
For their deceitfulness is [k]useless.
119 You have [l]removed all the wicked of the earth like (AL)dross;
Therefore I (AM)love Your testimonies.
120 My flesh [m](AN)trembles for fear of You,
And I am (AO)afraid of Your judgments.
