Numbers 22

Chapter 22[a]

[b]Then the people of Israel traveled to the plains of Moab and camped along the Jordan across from Jericho.

Balak Summons Balaam. Now Balak, the son of Zippor, had seen everything that Israel had done to the Amorites, and Moab was terrified because there were so many people, and Moab was filled with dread of the people of Israel. Moab said to the elders of Midian, “This mob will lick up everything around us just like an ox licks up grass in the pasture.”

Balak, the son of Zippor, was the king of the Moabites at this time. He sent messengers to Pethor which is near the river[c] in his native land, to Balaam, the son of Beor, to summon him. He said, “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt and they cover the surface of the earth. They are now living opposite me. Please come now and curse this people for me for they are too powerful for me. Maybe then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. I know well that whomever you bless is blessed, and whomever you curse is cursed.”

The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian left, carrying the fee for the divination in their hands. They came to Balaam, and they told him what Balak had said. He said to them, “Spend the night here, and I will bring you the answer the Lord gives me.” So the leaders of Moab stayed with Balaam. God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?” 10 Balaam said to God, “Balak, the son of Zippor, the king of Moab, sent for me, saying, 11 ‘Behold, a people has come out of Egypt who now covers the face of the earth. Now come and curse them for me. Perhaps I will be able to defeat them and drive them away.’ ” 12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. Do not curse the people, for they are blessed.”[d]

13 The next morning Balaam arose and said to Balak’s representatives, “Go back to your country, for the Lord refuses to allow me to go with you.”

14 The leaders of Moab returned and said to Balak, “Balaam refused to come with us.” 15 So Balak sent some more leaders, even more distinguished than the others. 16 They came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak, the son of Zippor: ‘Please, let nothing keep you from coming to me 17 for I will honor you greatly, and I will do whatever you ask of me. Please come and curse this people.’ ” 18 Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak: “If Balak were to grant me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything, small or great, contrary to the word of the Lord, my God. 19 But now, please stay here this night as well, so that I may know what the Lord says to me.” 20 God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If these men have come to summon you, rise up and go with them, but do only what I tell you.”

21 Balaam’s Donkey. Balaam arose in the morning and saddled his donkey and went with the leaders of Moab. 22 But God grew very angry because he had gone, and so an angel of the Lord blocked his path on the roadway. He was riding on a donkey and his two servants were with him. 23 The donkey saw the angel of the Lord[e] standing in the roadway with his drawn sword in his hand, and the donkey left the roadway and wandered into the field. Balaam beat the donkey to force it back onto the roadway.

24 Then an angel of the Lord stood in the narrow pathway in the vineyards, walls standing on either side. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed so close to the wall that it crushed Balaam’s foot against it, so he beat it again. 26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place that had no room to turn either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam who became angry and beat it with a staff.

28 The Lord opened the donkey’s mouth and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?” 29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me. If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now!” 30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, which you have always ridden, even til today? Have I ever done this to you before?” He said, “No.” 31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the roadway with a drawn sword in his hand. He bowed down and fell flat on his face. 32 The angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you for the path before you is wrong. 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. Otherwise, I would surely have killed you, but it I would have spared.”

34 Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned. I did not realize that you were standing there opposing my way. If I have displeased you, then I will go back.” 35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but say only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with the leaders to Balak.

36 When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to Moab to meet him, a city which is on the Arnon border, at the farthest edge of his territory. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not summon you urgently? Why have you not come to me? Am I not able to reward you?” 38 Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you now. Do I have any power to say anything? I will only speak the word that God puts in my mouth.”

39 Balaam went with Balak, and they arrived in Kiriath-huzoth. 40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent some of its meat to Balaam and the leaders who were with him. 41 The next day Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-baal so that he might see the outposts of the people.

Psalm 62-63

Psalm 62[a]

Trust in God Alone

For the director.[b] For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

In God alone is my soul[c] at rest;
    it is from him that my salvation comes.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress, so that I stand ever unshaken.
How long will you assault someone,
    and all of you beat him down,
as if he were a leaning wall
    or a tottering fence?[d]
They devise plots to dislodge me
    from my place on high[e]
    and delight in spreading lies about me.
They bless with their lips,
    but they curse in their hearts. Selah
In God alone be at rest,[f] O my soul;
    it is from him that my hope comes.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress, so that I stand unshaken.
My deliverance and my glory depend on God;
    he is my mighty rock and my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, my people,
    and pour out your heart before him,[g]
    for God is our refuge. Selah
10 Ordinary people are no more than a breath,
    and the great are no more than a delusion.
When they are placed on scales all together,
    they are lighter than air.[h]
11 Do not place your trust in extortion,
    and set no vain hopes in stolen goods;
no matter how greatly your wealth increases,
    do not set your heart[i] on it.
12 One thing God has revealed;
    two things have I heard:
that power belongs to you, O God,
13     and so does kindness,[j]Lord.
You reward each person
    in accordance with his deeds.

Psalm 63[k]

Thirst for God

A psalm of David. When he was in the wilderness of Judah.[l]

O God, you are my God,
    for whom I have been searching earnestly.[m]
My soul yearns for you
    and my body thirsts for you,
like the earth when it is parched,
    arid and without water.
I have gazed upon you in the sanctuary
    so that I may behold your power[n] and your glory.
Your kindness[o] is a greater joy than life itself;
    thus my lips will speak your praise.
I will bless you all my life;
    with uplifted hands[p] I will call on your name.
My soul[q] will be satisfied as at a banquet
    and with rejoicing lips my mouth will praise you.
I think of you while I lie upon my bed,[r]
    and I meditate on you during the watches of the night.
For you are my help,
    and in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.[s]
My soul clings tightly to you;
    your right hand holds me fast.
10 [t]Those who seek my life will incur ruin;
    they will sink down into the depths of the earth.
11 They will be slain by the sword
    and their flesh will become food for jackals.[u]
12 But the king will rejoice in God;
    all who swear by him[v] will exult,
    for the mouths of liars will be silenced.

Isaiah 11-12

Chapter 11

A Reign of Justice and Peace[a]

A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse,
    and a branch will grow from his roots.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him:
    a Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
a Spirit of counsel and power,
    a Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord,
    and his delight will be the fear of the Lord.
He will not judge by outward appearances
    or reach a verdict based on hearsay.
Rather, he will judge the poor with justice
    and render fair decisions for the weak and the poor.
He will strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
Righteousness will be the belt around his waist
    and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
Then the wolf will live alongside the lamb,
    and the leopard will lie down with the kid;
the calf and the young lion will browse together,
    with a little child to guide them.
The cow and the bear will graze side by side;
    their young will lie down together,
    and the lion will eat hay like the ox.
The infant will play by the cobra’s den,
    and the young child will lay his hand
    on the viper’s nest.
No injury or harm will occur
    on all my holy mountain;
for the earth will be filled with knowledge of the Lord
    just as water covers the sea.

Ephraim and Judah United

10 On that day the root of Jesse
    will be established as a signal to the nations.
They will come forth to unite under him,
    and his dwelling will be glorious.
11 When that day comes,
    the Lord will reach out his hand a second time
to recover the remnant of his people
    from Assyria and Egypt,
from Patmos,[b] Ethiopia, and Elam,
    from Shinar, Hamath, and the islands of the sea.
12 He will raise a signal to the nations
    and assemble the outcasts of Israel.
He will also gather the dispersed of Judah
    from the four corners of the earth.
13 The jealousy of Ephraim will cease
    and the hostility of Judah will end.
Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah,
    nor will Judah have any hostility toward Ephraim.
14 Together they will swoop down
    on the foothills of the Philistines to the west
    and plunder the people of the east.
Edom and Moab will become subject to their rule,
    and the Ammonites will obey them.[c]
15 The Lord will dry up a pathway
    through the Sea of Egypt,
and he will wave his hand over the Euphrates
    in his fierce anger,
splitting it into seven streams
    so that it can be crossed on foot.
16 Thus there will be a highway
    for the remnant of his people from Assyria,
as there was for the Israelites
    when they came up from the land of Egypt.

Chapter 12

Thanksgiving for Salvation

On that day you will say:

I will give you thanks, O Lord.
    Even though you were angry with me,
your anger has abated
    and you have consoled me.
God truly is my salvation;
    I will trust in him and be unafraid.
For the Lord is my strength and my source of courage;
    he has been my salvation.
With joy you will draw water
    from the fountain of salvation,
    and you will say on that day:
Give thanks to the Lord,
    invoke his name;
make known his deeds among the nations;
    proclaim that his name is exalted.
Sing praise to the Lord for his mighty deeds;
    let this be known throughout the entire world.
Cry out and shout for joy,
    all of you who dwell on Zion,
for great in your midst
    is the Holy One of Israel.

James 5

Chapter 5

Woe to the Rich.[a] Come now, you who are rich. Lament and weep over the miseries that will soon overwhelm you. Your riches have rotted. Your clothes are all moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded. Their corrosion will serve as a witness against you and consume your flesh like a fire. You have hoarded wealth for the last days.

Behold, the wages you fraudulently withheld from the laborers who harvested your fields are crying out, and the cries of those harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have gorged yourselves as on the day of slaughter. You have condemned the righteous man and murdered him, even though he offered you no resistance.

Patience, for the Lord’s Coming Is Near.[b] Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Think of how patiently a farmer awaits the precious crop from his fields until they have received the early and the late rains. You too must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.[c]

Brethren, do not raise complaints against one another lest you yourselves be brought to judgment. Behold, the Judge is standing at the gates.

10 As an example of patience in enduring hardship, brethren, consider the Prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Indeed, those who had perseverance are the ones we call blessed. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and have come to understand the Lord’s purpose in this respect, because the Lord is merciful and compassionate.

12 Do Not Swear. Above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth, or use any oaths at all. Let your “Yes” mean “Yes” and your “No” mean “No.” Otherwise you may be condemned.[d]

13 Anointing of the Sick.[e]Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? He should send for the presbyters of the Church so that they may pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.

16 Confession and Intercession. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

17 Elijah was a man like us. Yet when he prayed fervently that it might not rain for three and a half years, it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and the heavens gave forth rain, and the earth once again brought forth its harvest.

Conclusion

19 The Peace of Fraternal Love.[f] My brethren, if one of you should stray from the truth and another succeeds in bringing him back, 20 remember this: A person who brings back a sinner from erring ways will rescue his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
