Deuteronomy 23

Exclusion and Inclusion

23 “No man whose testicles have been crushed or whose penis has been cut off may enter the Lord’s assembly. No one of illegitimate birth may enter the Lord’s assembly; none of his descendants, even to the tenth generation, may enter the Lord’s assembly. No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the Lord’s assembly;(A) none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, may ever enter the Lord’s assembly. This is because they did not meet you with food and water on the journey after you came out of Egypt, and because Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram-naharaim was hired to curse you.(B) Yet the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam, but he turned the curse into a blessing for you because the Lord your God loves(C) you.(D) Never pursue their welfare or prosperity as long as you live. Do not despise an Edomite, because he is your brother. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you were a resident alien in his land. The children born to them in the third generation may enter the Lord’s assembly.

Cleanliness of the Camp

“When you are encamped against your enemies, be careful to avoid anything offensive. 10 If there is a man among you who is unclean because of a bodily emission during the night, he must go outside the camp; he may not come anywhere inside the camp. 11 When evening approaches, he is to wash with water, and when the sun sets he may come inside the camp.(E) 12 You are to have a place outside the camp and go there to relieve yourself. 13 You are to have a digging tool in your equipment; when you relieve yourself, dig a hole with it and cover up your excrement. 14 For the Lord your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you; so your encampments must be holy. He must not see anything indecent among you or he will turn away from you.

Fugitive Slaves

15 “Do not return a slave to his master when he has escaped from his master to you. 16 Let him live among you wherever he wants within your city gates. Do not mistreat him.

Cult Prostitution Forbidden

17 “No Israelite woman is to be a cult prostitute, and no Israelite man is to be a cult prostitute. 18 Do not bring a female prostitute’s wages or a male prostitute’s[a] earnings into the house of the Lord your God to fulfill any vow, because both are detestable to the Lord your God.

Interest on Loans

19 “Do not charge your brother interest on silver, food, or anything that can earn interest. 20 You may charge a foreigner interest, but you must not charge your brother Israelite interest, so that the Lord your God may bless you in everything you do[b] in the land you are entering to possess.(F)

Keeping Vows

21 “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to keep it, because he will require it of you, and it will be counted against you as sin. 22 But if you refrain from making a vow, it will not be counted against you as sin. 23 Be careful to do whatever comes from your lips, because you have freely vowed what you promised to the Lord your God.(G)

Neighbor’s Crops

24 “When you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat as many grapes as you want until you are full, but do not put any in your container. 25 When you enter your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck heads of grain with your hand, but do not put a sickle to your neighbor’s grain.

Psalm 112-113

Psalm 112

The Traits of the Righteous

Hallelujah![a]
Happy is the person who fears the Lord,
taking great delight in his commands.(A)
His descendants will be powerful in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.(B)
Wealth and riches are in his house,(C)
and his righteousness endures forever.(D)
Light shines in the darkness for the upright.(E)
He is gracious, compassionate, and righteous.(F)
Good will come to the one who lends generously
and conducts his business fairly.(G)
He will never be shaken.(H)
The righteous one will be remembered forever.(I)
He will not fear bad news;
his heart is confident, trusting in the Lord.(J)
His heart is assured; he will not fear.(K)
In the end he will look in triumph on his foes.(L)
He distributes freely to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever.(M)
His horn will be exalted in honor.(N)

10 The wicked one will see it and be angry;
he will gnash his teeth in despair.(O)
The desire of the wicked leads to ruin.(P)

Psalm 113

Praise to the Merciful God

Hallelujah!
Give praise, servants of the Lord;
praise the name of the Lord.(Q)
Let the name of the Lord be blessed
both now and forever.(R)
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
let the name of the Lord be praised.(S)

The Lord is exalted above all the nations,(T)
his glory above the heavens.(U)
Who is like the Lord our God—
the one enthroned on high,(V)
who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?(W)
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the trash heap(X)
in order to seat them with nobles—
with the nobles of his people.(Y)
He gives the childless woman a household,
making her the joyful mother of children.(Z)
Hallelujah!

Isaiah 50

50 This is what the Lord says:

Where is your mother’s divorce certificate
that I used to send her away?(A)
Or to which of my creditors did I sell you?(B)
Look, you were sold for your iniquities,(C)
and your mother was sent away
because of your transgressions.
Why was no one there when I came?
Why was there no one to answer when I called?
Is my arm too weak to redeem?(D)
Or do I have no power to rescue?
Look, I dry up the sea by my rebuke;(E)
I turn the rivers into a wilderness;
their fish rot because of lack of water
and die of thirst.
I dress the heavens in black
and make sackcloth their covering.(F)

The Obedient Servant

The Lord God has given me
the tongue of those who are instructed(G)
to know how to sustain the weary with a word.
He awakens me each morning;
he awakens my ear to listen like those being instructed.(H)
The Lord God has opened my ear,
and I was not rebellious;
I did not turn back.(I)
I gave my back to those who beat me,
and my cheeks to those who tore out my beard.
I did not hide my face from scorn and spitting.(J)

The Lord God will help me;
therefore I have not been humiliated;
therefore I have set my face like flint,(K)
and I know I will not be put to shame.
The one who vindicates me is near;(L)
who will contend with me?
Let us confront each other.[a]
Who has a case against me?[b]
Let him come near me!

In truth, the Lord God will help me;
who will condemn me?(M)
Indeed, all of them will wear out like a garment;
a moth will devour them.(N)
10 Who among you fears the Lord
and listens to his servant?(O)
Who among you walks in darkness,
and has no light?
Let him trust in the name of the Lord;
let him lean on his God.
11 Look, all you who kindle a fire,
who encircle yourselves with[c] torches;
walk in the light of your fire
and of the torches you have lit!
This is what you’ll get from my hand:
you will lie down in a place of torment.

Revelation 20

Satan Bound

20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven holding the key to the abyss(A) and a great chain(B) in his hand. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan,[a](C) and bound(D) him for a thousand years. He threw him into the abyss, closed it, and put a seal on it(E) so that he would no longer deceive the nations(F) until the thousand years were completed. After that, he must be released for a short time.

The Saints Reign with Christ

Then I saw thrones, and people seated on them who were given authority to judge.(G) I also saw the souls of those(H) who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus(I) and because of the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and who had not accepted the mark on their foreheads or their hands.(J) They came to life(K) and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.(L) The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed.

This is the first resurrection. Blessed(M) and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! The second death(N) has no power[b] over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.(O)

Satanic Rebellion Crushed

When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations(P) at the four corners of the earth,(Q) Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle.(R) Their number is like the sand of the sea.(S) They came up across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the encampment of the saints, the beloved city.(T) Then fire came down from heaven[c] and consumed them.(U) 10 The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet are,(V) and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.(W)

The Great White Throne Judgment

11 Then I saw a great white throne and one seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from his presence, and no place was found for them.(X) 12 I also saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened.(Y) Another book was opened, which is the book of life,(Z) and the dead were judged according to their works(AA) by what was written in the books. 13 Then the sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades(AB) gave up the dead that were in them; each one was judged according to their works. 14 Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.(AC) This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
