1 Samuel 9

¶ Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a son of Jemini, {Benjamin} a mighty man of power.

And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a handsome young man. Among the sons of Israel there was not a nicer person than he; from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

¶ And the she asses of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. And Kish said to Saul, his son, Take now one of the slaves with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

And he passed through Mount Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of Shalim, and they were not there, and he passed through the land of Jemini, {or of Benjamin} but they did not find them.

And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses and take thought for us.

And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honorable man; all that he says surely comes to pass; now let us go there; peradventure he can show us our way that we should go.

Then Saul replied unto his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our vessels, and we have nothing to present unto the man of God. What do we have?

And the servant answered Saul again and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver; this will I give to the man of God to tell us our way.

(Beforetime in Israel when anyone went to enquire of God, he spoke thus, Come, and let us go to the seer, for he that is now called a Prophet was called a Seer before.)

10 Then Saul said to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.

11 And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water and said unto them, Is the seer here?

12 And they answered them and said, He is; behold, he is before you; make haste now, for he came today to the city, for there is a sacrifice of the people today in the high place.

13 As soon as you are come into the city, ye shall straightway find him before he goes up to the high place to eat, for the people will not eat until he comes because he must bless the sacrifice, and afterwards those that are invited eat. Now therefore go up, for about this time ye shall find him.

14 And they went up into the city. And when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out before them to go up to the high place.

15 Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,

16 Tomorrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be prince over my people Israel that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines, for I have looked upon my people because their cry is come unto me.

17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spoke to thee of! This same shall reign over my people.

18 ¶ Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is.

19 And Samuel answered Saul and said, I am the seer; go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me today, and tomorrow I will let thee go and will tell thee all that is in thy heart.

20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, take no care for them, for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee and on all thy father’s house?

21 And Saul answered and said, Peradventure am I not of Jemini, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And is my family not the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why, therefore, dost thou speak so to me?

22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the banquet chamber and made them sit at the head among those that were invited, which were about thirty persons.

23 And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it aside.

24 And the cook took up the shoulder and that which was upon it and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which was reserved! Set it before thee and eat because for this time it has been kept for thee, since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, he spoke with Saul upon the top of the house.

26 And they arose early about dawn, and Samuel called Saul, who was on the top of the house, saying, Rise up that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

27 And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us (and he passed on), but stand thou still a while that I may declare thee the word of God.

Romans 7

¶ Know ye not, brethren (for I speak to those that know the law), that the law has dominion over a man only as long as he lives?

For the woman who is subject to a husband is obligated to the law so long as the husband lives; but if the husband dies, she is free from the law of the husband.

So then if, while her husband lives, she belongs to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law so that she is no adulteress if she belongs to another man.

Likewise ye also, my brethren, are become dead to the law in the body of the Christ that ye should belong to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

For while we were in the flesh, the affections of the sins which were by the law worked in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

But now we are free from the law of death in which we were held, that we might serve in newness of Spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

¶ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? No, in no wise. But, I did not know sin except by the law; for neither would I have known lust if the law did not say, Thou shalt not covet.

Then sin, when there was occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of lust. For without the law sin was as if it were dormant.

So that without the law I lived for some time; but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

10 And I found that the same commandment, which was unto life, was mortal unto me.

11 For sin, having had occasion, deceived me by the commandment and by it killed me.

12 So the law is truly holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? No, in no wise. But sin, to show itself sin by that which is good, worked death in me, making sin exceedingly sinful by the commandment.

14 ¶ For we now know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold unto subjection by sin.

15 For that which I do, I do not understand, and not even the good that I desire is what I do; but what I hate, that is what I do.

16 If then I do that which I do not desire, I approve that the law is good.

17 So that it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells in me.

18 And I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwells no good thing; for I have the desire, but I am not able to perform that which is good.

19 For I do not do the good that I desire; but the evil which I do not desire, that I do.

20 And if I do that which I do not desire, I am not working, but sin that dwells in me.

21 So that, desiring to do good, I find this law: evil is natural unto me.

22 For I delight with the law of God with the inward man,

23 but I see another law in my members which rebels against the law of my mind, bringing captive unto the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 The grace of God, by Jesus, the Christ, our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

Jeremiah 46

46 ¶ The word of the LORD which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles.

To Egypt: against the army of Pharaohnecho king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah.

Order ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.

Harness the horses; and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines.

Why have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down and are fled in haste, and do not look back: for fear was round about, said the LORD.

Do not let the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they stumbled and fell toward the north by the river Euphrates.

Who is this that comes up as a flood, whose waters move as rivers?

Egypt rises up like a flood, and his waters move like rivers; and he said, I will go up and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and its inhabitants.

Come up, ye horses; and rage, ye chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; the Ethiopians and the Libyans, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, that handle and bend the bow.

10 But this day shall be unto the Lord GOD of the hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries; and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiated and made drunk with their blood; for it shall be a slaughter unto the Lord GOD of the hosts in the north country by the river Euphrates.

11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for there is no cure for thee.

12 ¶ The nations have heard of thy shame, and thy cry has filled the land; for the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty, and they are both fallen together.

13 The word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.

14 Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Memphis and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee; for the sword shall devour round about thee.

15 Why is thy fortress swept away? It could not stand because the LORD pushed it over.

16 He multiplied the fallen; yea, one fell upon another; and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people and to the land of our nativity, away from the overcoming sword.

17 They cried there: Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he allowed the appointed time to pass by.

18 As I live, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of the hosts, Surely as Tabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.

19 O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, furnish thyself to go into captivity; for Memphis shall be a pasture and shall be made desolate without an inhabitant.

20 Egypt is like a very fair heifer, but destruction comes; it comes out of the north.

21 Also her soldiers are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks; for they also turned back, and all fled away without stopping: because the day of their calamity was come upon them and the time of their visitation.

22 Her voice shall go forth like a serpent; for they shall march with an army and come against her with axes as hewers of wood.

23 They shall cut down her forest, saith the LORD, for they cannot be counted because they are more than the locusts; they are innumerable.

24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

25 The LORD of the hosts, the God of Israel, said: Behold, I will visit the multitude of Alexandria, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and all those that trust in him.

26 And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their soul and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his slaves; and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the LORD.

27 But fear not thou, O my slave Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return and be in rest and be prospered, and no one shall make him afraid.

28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my slave, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the Gentiles where I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but I will chastise thee with judgment; and I will not completely cut thee off.

Psalm 22

To the Overcomer upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.

¶ My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me and from the words of my cry?

O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest in the midst of the praises of Israel.

Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.

They cried unto thee and were delivered: they trusted in thee and were not confounded.

But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men and despised of the people.

All those that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

Turn him over to the LORD, let him deliver him, let him save him, seeing he delighted in him.

But thou art he that took me out of the womb; thou hast made me wait upon thee since I was upon my mother’s breasts.

10 I was cast upon thee from the womb; thou art my God from my mother’s belly.

11 ¶ Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is no one to help.

12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round about.

13 They opened their mouth upon me as a ravening and a roaring lion.

14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

17 I may count all my bones: they look and stare upon me.

18 They part my garments among them and cast lots upon my vesture.

19 But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.

20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my life from the power of the dog.

21 Save me from the lion’s mouth and from the horns of the unicorns.

22 ¶ I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee.

23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.

24 For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the poor in spirit; neither has he hid his face from him, but when he cried unto him, he heard.

25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation; I will pay my vows before those that fear him.

26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied: those that seek him shall praise the LORD; your heart shall live for ever.

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn unto the LORD; and all the families of the Gentiles shall worship before thee.

28 For the kingdom is the LORD’s, and he shall have dominion over the Gentiles.

29 All those that are fat upon earth shall eat and worship; all those that go down to the dust shall bow before him; and no one can keep his own soul alive.

30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.

31 They shall come and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he has done this.
