1 Kings 19

19 5 Elijah fleeing from Jezebel, is nourished by the Angel of God. 15 He is commanded to anoint Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha.

Now Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had slain all the [a]prophets with the sword.

Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, [b]The gods do so to me and more also, if I make not thy life like one of their lives by tomorrow this time.

¶ When he saw that, he arose, and went [c]for his life, and came to Beersheba, which is in Judah, and left his servant there.

But he went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a Juniper tree, and desired that he might die, and said, It is now enough: O Lord, [d]take my soul, for I am no better than my fathers.

And as he lay and slept under the Juniper tree, behold now, an Angel touched him, and said unto him, Up, and eat.

And when he looked about, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a pot of water at his head: so he did eat and drink, and returned and slept.

And the Angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Up, and eat: for [e]thou hast a great journey.

¶ Then he arose, and did eat and drink, and walked in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights, unto Horeb the mount of God.

And there he entered into a cave, and lodged there: and behold, the Lord spake to him, and said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

10 And he answered, I have [f]been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, broken down thine altars, and slain thy Prophets with the sword, (A)and I only am left, and they seek my life to take it away.

11 And he said, Come out, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And behold, the Lord went by, and a mighty strong wind rent the mountains, and brake the rocks before the Lord: but the Lord was [g]not in the wind: and after the wind came an earthquake: but the Lord was not in the earthquake:

12 And after the earthquake came fire: but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire came a still and soft voice.

13 And when Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering of the cave: and behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

14 And he answered, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts, [h]because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, cast down thine altars, and slain thy Prophets with the sword, and I only am left, and they seek my life to take it away.

15 And the Lord said unto him, Go, return by the wilderness unto Damascus, and when thou comest there, anoint Hazael king over [i]Aram.

16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint King over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah shalt thou anoint to be Prophet in thy room.

17 And (B)him that escapeth from the sword of Hazael, shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu, shall Elisha slay.

18 Yet will (C)I leave seven thousand in Israel: even [j]all the knees that have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth that hath not kissed him.

19 ¶ So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and was with the twelfth: and Elijah went towards him, and cast his mantel upon him.

20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, [k]Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. Who answered him, Go, return: for what have I done to thee?

21 And when he went back again from him, he took a couple of oxen, and slew them, and sod their flesh with the [l]instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat: then he arose and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

1 Thessalonians 2

1 He declareth how faithfully he preacheth the Gospel unto them, 5 seeking neither gain, 6 nor praise of men:  10 and he proveth the same by their own testimony:  14 that they did courageously bear persecution of their countrymen: 17 that he desireth very much to see them.

For [a]ye yourselves know, brethren, that our entrance in unto you was not in vain,

[b]But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated at (A)Philippi, (as ye know) we were bold in [c]our God, to speak unto you the Gospel of God, with much striving.

[d]For our exhortation was not by deceit, nor [e]by uncleanness, nor by guile.

[f]But as we were [g]allowed of God, that the Gospel should be committed unto us, so we speak, not as they that please men, but God, which [h]approveth our hearts:

Neither yet did we ever use flattering words, as ye know, nor colored covetousness, God is record.

[i]Neither sought we praise of men, neither of you, nor of others, when we might have been [j]chargeable, as the Apostles of Christ.

But we were [k]gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children.

[l]Thus being affectioned toward you, our good will was to have dealt unto you, not the Gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

[m]For ye remember, brethren, (B)our labor and travail: for we labored day and night, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, and preached unto you the Gospel of God.

10 [n]Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily, and justly, and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe.

11 [o]As ye know how that we exhorted you, and comforted, and besought every one of you, (as a father his children.)

12 [p]That ye (C)would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

13 [q]For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, that when ye received the word of God, which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is indeed the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe.

14 [r]For brethren, ye are become followers of the Churches of God, which in Judea are in [s]Christ Jesus, because ye have also suffered the same things of your own [t]country men, even as they have of the Jews,

15 [u]Who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own Prophets, and have persecuted us away, [v]and God they please not, and are contrary to [w]all men,

16 And forbid us to preach unto the Gentiles, that they might be saved, to [x]fulfill their sins always: for the [y]wrath of God is come on them to the utmost.

17 [z]Forasmuch, brethren, as we [aa]were kept from you for a season, concerning sight, but not in the heart, we enforced the more to see your face with great desire.

18 Therefore we would have come unto you (I Paul, at least once or twice) but Satan hindered us.

19 For what is our hope or joy, or crown of rejoicing? are not even you it in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

20 Yea, ye are our glory and joy.

Daniel 1

Daniel

1 The captivity of Jehoiakim king of Judah. 4 The king chooseth certain young men of the Jews to learn his law. 5 They have the king’s ordinary appointed, 8 but they abstain from it.

In the [a]third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, came Nebuchadnezzar King of Babel unto Jerusalem and besieged it.

And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand with part of the vessels of the house of God, which he carried into the land of [b]Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into his god’s treasury.

And the King spake unto [c]Ashpenaz the master of his [d]Eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, of the [e]King’s seed, and of the princes:

Children in whom was no blemish, but well [f]favored, and instruct in all wisdom, and well seen in knowledge, and able to utter knowledge, and such as were able to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might [g]teach the learning, and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

And the king appointed them provision every day of a [h]portion of the king’s meat, and of the wine, which he drank, so nourishing them [i]three years, that at the end thereof, they might stand [j]before the king.

Now among these were certain of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.

Unto whom the chief of the Eunuchs [k]gave other names: for he called Daniel, Belteshazzar, and Hananiah, Shadrach, and Mishael, Meshach, and Azariah, Abednego.

¶ But Daniel had determined in his heart, that he would not [l]defile himself with the portion of the King’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he required the chief of the Eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

(Now God had brought Daniel into favor, and tender love with the chief of the Eunuchs.)

10 And the chief of the Eunuchs said unto Daniel, [m]I fear my lord the King, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: therefore if he see your faces worse liking than the other children which are of your sort, then shall you make me lose mine head unto the King.

11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the chief of the Eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, [n]ten days, and let them give us [o]pulse to eat, and water to drink.

13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenances of the children that eat of the portion of the King’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

14 So he consented to them in this matter, an proved them ten days.

15 And at the end of ten days, their [p]countenances appeared fairer, and in [q]better liking than all the children’s, which did eat the portion of the King’s meat.

16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.

17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge, and understanding in all learning [r]and wisdom: also he gave Daniel understanding of all [s]visions and dreams.

18 Now when the time [t]was expired, that the King had appointed to bring them in, the chief of the Eunuchs brought them before Nebuchadnezzar.

19 And the King communed with them: and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

20 And in all matters of wisdom, and understanding that the King enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the enchanters and astrologians that were in all his realm.

21 And Daniel was unto [u]the first year of king Cyrus.

Psalm 105

105 1 He praiseth the singular grace of God, who hath of all the people of the world chosen a peculiar people to himself, and having chosen them, never ceaseth to do them good, even for his promise’s sake.

Praise the Lord, and call upon his Name: [a]declare his works among the people.

Sing unto him, sing praise unto him, and talk of all his wondrous works.

Rejoice in his holy Name, let the heart of them that seek the Lord, rejoice.

Seek the Lord and his [b]strength: seek his face continually.

Remember his [c]marvelous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the [d]judgments of his mouth,

Ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye children of Jacob, which are his elect.

He is the Lord our God: his judgments are through all the earth.

He hath always remembered his covenant, and promise, that he made to a thousand generations,

Even that which he [e]made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac:

10 And since hath confirmed it to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,

11 Saying, [f]Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance.

12 Albeit they were few in number, yea very few, and strangers in the land,

13 And walked about from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people,

14 Yet suffered he no man to do them wrong, but reproved [g]Kings for their sakes, saying,

15 Touch not mine [h]anointed, and do my [i]Prophets no harm.

16 Moreover, he called a famine upon the land, and utterly brake the [j]staff of bread.

17 But he sent a man before them: Joseph was sold for a slave.

18 They held his feet in the stocks, and he was laid in irons,

19 Until [k]his appointed time came, and the counsel of the Lord had tried him.

20 The King sent and loosed him: even the Ruler of the people delivered him.

21 He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance,

22 That he should bind his [l]princes unto his will, and teach his Ancients wisdom.

23 Then Israel came to Egypt, and Jacob was a stranger in the land of Ham.

24 And he increased his people exceedingly, and made them stronger than their oppressors.

25 [m]He turned their heart to hate his people, and to deal craftily with his servants.

26 Then sent he Moses his servant, and Aaron whom he had chosen.

27 They showed among them the message of his signs, and wonders in the land of Ham.

28 He sent darkness, and made it dark: and they were not [n]disobedient unto his commission.

29 (A)He turned their waters into blood, and slew their fish.

30 (B)Their land brought forth frogs, even in their King’s chambers.

31 He [o]spake, and there came swarms of flies and lice in all their quarters.

32 He gave them [p]hail for rain, and flames of fire in their land.

33 He smote their vines also and their fig trees, and brake down the trees in their coasts.

34 [q]He spake and the grasshoppers came, and caterpillars innumerable,

35 And did eat up all the grass in their land, and devoured the fruit of their ground.

36 (C)He smote also all the firstborn in their land, even the beginning of all their strength.

37 He brought them forth also with silver and gold, and there was [r]none feeble among their tribes.

38 Egypt was [s]glad at their departing: for the fear of them had fallen upon them.

39 He spread a cloud to be a covering, and fire to give light in the night.

40 They [t]asked, and he brought quails, and he filled them with the bread of heaven.

41 He opened the rock, and the water flowed out, and ran in the dry places like a river.

42 For he remembered his holy [u]promise to Abraham his servant,

43 And he brought forth his people with [v]joy, and his chosen with gladness,

44 And gave them the lands of the heathen, and they took the labors of the people in possession,

45 That they might [w]keep his statutes, and observe his Laws. Praise ye the Lord.
