1 Samuel 18

Saul Fears David

18 When David finished talking with Saul, ·Jonathan felt very close to David [L the life/soul of Jonathan was knit/bound to the life/soul of David]. He loved David as much as ·he loved himself [L his own life/soul]. Saul kept David with him from that day on and did not let him go home to his father’s house. Jonathan made an ·agreement [covenant; solemn pact; treaty] with David, because he loved David as much as ·himself [L his own life/soul]. He took off his ·coat [robe; C perhaps a royal robe] and gave it to David, along with his ·armor [tunic], including his sword, bow, and belt [C an expression of loyalty to David and perhaps even giving him the future kingship].

[L Wherever] Saul sent David ·to fight in different battles, and David [out, he] was very successful. Then Saul put David ·over [in command of] the soldiers, which pleased Saul’s ·officers [servants] and all the other people.

After David had ·killed [L struck] the Philistine, he and the men returned home. Women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul. They sang songs of joy, danced, and played tambourines and ·stringed [musical] instruments. As they played, they sang,

“Saul has ·killed thousands of his enemies [T slain his thousands],
·but [and] David has ·killed [T slain his] tens of thousands.”

The women’s ·song upset [refrain/saying displeased/L was evil in the eyes/sight of] Saul, and he became very angry. He thought, “The women ·say David has killed [credit/ascribe to David] tens of thousands, but they ·say I have killed [credit/ascribe to me] only thousands. The only thing left for him to have is the kingdom!” So Saul watched David closely from then on, because he was jealous.

10 The next day an ·evil [tormenting] spirit from God ·rushed upon [overwhelmed; seized; possessed] Saul, and he ·prophesied [or raved madly] in his house. David was playing the harp as he usually did, but Saul had a spear in his hand. 11 Saul threw the spear, thinking, “I’ll pin David to the wall.” But David ·escaped from [eluded] him twice.

12 The Lord was with David but had ·left [departed/withdrawn/turned away from] Saul. So Saul was afraid of David. 13 He sent David away and made him commander of a thousand soldiers. So David led them ·in battle [L out and back in]. 14 He ·had great success [prospered] in everything he did because the Lord was with him. 15 When Saul saw that David ·was very successful [greatly prospered], he ·feared [dreaded; was in awe of] David even more. 16 But all the people of Israel and Judah loved David because he led them ·well in battle [L out and back in].

Saul’s Daughter Marries David

17 Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will ·let you marry her [L give her to you as a wife]. ·All I ask is that you remain [or But first you must show yourself] brave [L for me] and fight the Lord’s battles.” Saul thought, “I won’t ·have to kill David [L raise a hand against him]. The Philistines will do that.”

18 But David answered Saul, saying, “Who am I? ·My family is not important enough [What is my father’s family in Israel…?] for me to become the king’s son-in-law.” 19 So, when the time ·came [should have come] for Saul’s daughter Merab to marry David, Saul gave her instead to Adriel of Meholah [L as a wife].

20 Now Saul’s other daughter, Michal, loved David. When they told Saul, ·he was pleased [L the matter was right in his eyes]. 21 He thought, “I will ·let her marry [L give her to] David. ·Then […so that] she will be a ·trap [snare] for him, and the ·Philistines will defeat him [L hand of the Philistines will be against him].” So Saul said to David ·a second time, “You may [You have a second chance to] become my son-in-law.”

22 And Saul ordered his servants to talk with David ·in private [secretly] and say, “Look, the king ·likes [is delighted with] you. His servants love you. You should ·be [become] his son-in-law.”

23 Saul’s servants said these words ·to [L in the ears of] David, but David answered, “Do you think it is ·easy [L a small/trivial thing] to become the king’s son-in-law? I am poor and ·unimportant [have no position/reputation; C David cannot afford to pay the expected dowry].”

24 When Saul’s servants told him what David had said, 25 Saul said, “Tell David, ‘The king doesn’t want ·money [L a dowry/bride price] for the bride. All he wants is a hundred Philistine foreskins to get ·even with [revenge on] his enemies.’” Saul planned to let ·the Philistines kill David [L David fall at the hands of the Philistines].

26 When Saul’s servants told this to David, ·he was pleased [he was happy/delighted; L the thing was right in the eyes of David] to become the king’s son-in-law. [L So before the days were expired/fulfilled…] 27 He and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. David brought all their foreskins [L and counted them out] to ·Saul [the king] so he could be the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal for his wife. 28 Saul ·saw [realized; L saw and knew] that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David. 29 So he grew even more afraid of David, and he was David’s enemy ·all his life [from then on; L all the days].

30 The Philistine commanders continued to go out to fight the Israelites, but every time, David was more ·skillful [successful; wise] than Saul’s officers. So he became ·famous [highly esteemed; L his name became extremely valuable].

Romans 16

Greetings to the Christians

16 I ·recommend [commend] to you our sister Phoebe, who is a ·helper [or servant; or minister; or deacon; 1 Tim. 3:11] in the church in Cenchrea [C Phoebe may have been the messenger carrying this letter]. I ask you to ·accept [welcome] her in the Lord in the way ·God’s people should [worthy of the saints]. Help her with anything she needs, because she has ·helped [been a benefactor/patron to] many people, ·including [or especially] me.

Give my greetings to Priscilla and Aquila [Acts 18:2, 18, 26], ·who work together with me [L my coworkers] in Christ Jesus and who risked their own ·lives [neck] ·to save [L for] my life. I am thankful to them, and [L not only I, but] all the Gentile churches are thankful as well. Also, greet for me the church that meets at their house.

Greetings to my dear friend Epenetus, who was the ·first person in Asia to follow Christ [L firstfruit of Asia for Christ]. Greetings to Mary, who worked very hard for you. Greetings to Andronicus and Junia [C Junia is probably a woman’s name, though not certainly], my ·relatives [or fellow Jews], ·who were in prison with me [and fellow prisoners]. They are ·very important [prominent; or well known to/among the] apostles. They were believers in Christ before I was. Greetings to Ampliatus, my ·dear [beloved] friend in the Lord. Greetings to Urbanus, a worker together with me for Christ. And greetings to my ·dear [beloved] friend Stachys. 10 Greetings to Apelles, ·who was tested and proved that he truly loves Christ [or a proven servant of Christ; L approved in Christ]. Greetings to all those who are in the family of Aristobulus. 11 Greetings to Herodion, my ·fellow citizen [or fellow Jew; or relative]. Greetings to all those in the family of Narcissus who ·belong to [L are in] the Lord. 12 Greetings to Tryphena and Tryphosa, ·women who work very hard for [L laborers in] the Lord. Greetings to ·my dear friend [the beloved] Persis, who also has worked very hard ·for [L in] the Lord. 13 Greetings to Rufus, who is ·a special person [L chosen] in the Lord, and to his mother, who has been like a mother to me also. 14 Greetings to Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and all the brothers and sisters who are with them. 15 Greetings to Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and to all ·God’s people [T the saints] with them. 16 Greet each other with a holy kiss. All of Christ’s churches send greetings to you.

17 Brothers and sisters, I ·ask [urge; encourage] you to look out for those who cause ·divisions [dissension] and who ·upset other people’s faith [create obstacles/stumbling blocks]. ·They [or Such things] are against the true teaching you learned, so stay away from them. 18 Such people are not serving our Lord Christ but are ·only doing what pleases themselves [serving their own appetites/L bellies]. They use ·fancy [smooth] talk and ·fine words [flattery] to ·fool [deceive] the ·minds of those who do not know about evil [L hearts of the innocent/naive]. 19 All the believers have heard ·that you obey [about your obedience/faithfulness], so I ·am very happy [rejoice] because of you. But I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil.

20 The God ·who brings [L of] peace will soon ·defeat Satan and give you power over him [crush Satan under your feet; Gen. 3:15].

The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

21 Timothy [Acts 16:1–2; 1 Tim. 1:2; 2 Tim. 1:2], ·a worker together with me [my coworker], sends greetings, as well as Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater, my ·relatives [or fellow Jews].

22 I am Tertius, and I am writing this letter from Paul [C Tertius was the scribe, or amanuensis, to whom Paul was dictating the letter]. I send greetings to you in the Lord.

23 Gaius [1 Cor. 1:14; Acts 19:29] is ·letting me and the whole church here use his home [L host to me and to the whole church; C churches met in homes at this time]. He also sends greetings to you, as do Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus. |24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. Amen.|[a]

25 ·Glory to God [L Now to the one] who can make you strong in faith ·by [or in accord with] ·the Good News that I tell people [L my Gospel] and ·by [or in accord with] the ·message [preaching; proclamation] about Jesus Christ. The message about Christ is the ·secret [mystery; 11:25] that was hidden for long ages past but is now ·made known [revealed; disclosed]. 26 It has been ·made clear [revealed; disclosed] through the writings of the prophets. And by the command of the eternal God it is ·made known [revealed; disclosed] to all ·nations [Gentiles] ·that they might believe and obey [or for the obedience that follows faith; L for the obedience of faith].

27 To the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Lamentations 3

The Meaning of Suffering

I am a man [C symbolizing Jerusalem] who has seen the ·suffering [affliction]
    that comes from the rod of ·the Lord’s [L his] anger.
He ·led [L guided and brought] me
    into darkness, not light.
He turned his hand against me
    again and again, all day long [Jer. 21:5].

He ·wore out [wasted away] my flesh and skin
    and broke my bones.
He ·surrounded me with sadness
    and attacked me with grief [L has built up and besieged me with bitterness/or poverty and hardship].
He made me sit in the dark,
    like those who have been dead a long time.

He ·shut me [L walled me] in so I could not get out;
    he put heavy chains on me.
I cry out and beg for help,
    but he ·ignores [obstructs] my prayer.
He ·blocked [L walled in] my way with ·a stone wall [L cut stones]
    and ·led me in the wrong direction [L twisted my paths; Job 19:7–12].

10 He is like a bear ready to ·attack [ambush] me,
    like a lion in hiding [Hos. 13:8; Amos 5:19].
11 He led me the wrong way and ·let me stray [or tore me to pieces]
    and left me ·without help [desolate].
12 He ·prepared to shoot [has drawn] his bow
    and made me the target for his arrows.

13 He shot me in the kidneys
    with the arrows from his ·bag [quiver; Job 16:13].
14 I was a joke to all my people,
    who make fun of me with ·songs [mocking songs] all day long [Ps. 22:7; 69:12; 119:51].
15 ·The Lord [L He] filled me with ·misery [bitterness];
    he made me drunk with ·suffering [affliction; L wormwood; gall; C a bitter-tasting herb].

16 He ·broke [made me gnash] my teeth with gravel
    and trampled me into the ·dirt [dust; ashes].
17 ·I have no more peace [L My life/soul is rejected from peace].
    I have forgotten ·what happiness is [prosperity; L good].
18 I said, “My ·strength [luster; or endurance] ·is gone [has perished],
    and I have no hope in the Lord.”

19 Lord, remember my ·suffering [affliction] and my ·misery [or wanderings; homelessness; 1:7],
    ·my sorrow and trouble [L it is wormwood and gall; 3:15].
20 Please remember me
    and think about ·me [L my life].
21 But I have hope
    when I ·think of this [L return to my mind/heart]:

22 The Lord’s ·love [loyalty] never ends;
    his ·mercies [compassion] never stop.
23 They are new every morning;
    Lord, your ·loyalty [faithfulness] is ·great [abundant; Ps. 33:4; 92:2; 143:1].
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is ·mine [L my lot/portion],
    so I hope in him.”

25 The Lord is good to those who ·hope in [wait for] him,
    to those who seek him.
26 It is good to wait ·quietly [silently]
    for the Lord to ·save [be victorious].
27 It is good for someone to ·work hard [L carry/bear the yoke]
    while he is young.

28 He should sit alone and be ·quiet [silent];
    ·the Lord has given him hard work to do [L when it is imposed/heavy on him].
29 He should ·bow down to the ground [L put his mouth in the dust];
    maybe there is still hope.
30 He should ·let anyone slap [L give to the striker] his cheek;
    he should be ·filled [sated] with ·shame [scorn].

31 The Lord will not reject
    his people forever.
32 Although he brings ·sorrow [grief],
    he also has ·mercy [compassion] and great ·love [loyalty].
33 He does not ·like to punish people [L afflict from his heart]
    or make them ·sad [grieve].

34 ·He sees [L Does he not see…?] if any prisoner of the earth
    is crushed under ·his [or their; C the wicked oppressors’] feet;
35 ·he sees [L does he not see…?] if ·someone is treated unfairly [human rights are distorted]
    before the Most High God;
36 ·the Lord sees [L does the Lord not see…?]
    if someone is cheated in his case in court.

37 ·Nobody [L Who…?] can speak and have it happen
    unless the Lord commands it.
38 ·Both [L Do not…?] bad and good things
    come by the command of the Most High God [Job 2:10].
39 No ·one [L living person] should complain
    ·when he is punished for [L before] his sins.

40 Let us ·examine [check] and ·see [investigate] ·what we have done [L our ways]
    and then return to the Lord [C repent; Jer. 17:9–10; Ps. 139:23–24].
41 Let us lift up our hands ·and pray from [as well as] our hearts
    to God in heaven:
42 “We have ·sinned [transgressed] and ·turned [rebelled] against you,
    and you have not forgiven us.

43 “You ·wrapped [covered] yourself in anger and ·chased [pursued] us;
    you killed us without ·mercy [pity].
44 You ·wrapped [covered] yourself in a cloud [Ex. 40:34–38],
    and no prayer could ·get [pass] through.
45 You made us like ·scum [sweepings] and trash
    ·among the other nations [L in the midst of the peoples].

46 “All of our enemies
    ·open [L crack] their mouths and speak against us [2:16].
47 We have been ·frightened [terrified] and fearful,
    ruined and ·destroyed [broken].”
48 ·Streams of tears [L Channels of water] flow from my eyes,
    because ·my people are destroyed [L of the fracture of my people].

49 My tears flow ·continually [without ceasing],
    without ·stopping [respite; relaxation],
50 until the Lord looks down
    and sees from heaven.
51 ·I am sad when I see [L My eyes torment my life/soul]
    ·what has happened to all the women [because of all the daughters] of my city.

52 Those who are my enemies ·for no reason [without cause; Ps. 7:4; 35:7]
    hunted me like a bird [Ps. 91:3; Prov. 6:5; 7:23].
53 They ·tried to kill me [destroyed my life/soul] in a pit [Ps. 7:15; 9:15];
    they threw stones at me.
54 Water came up over my head [Ps. 69:1–2],
    and I said, “I am ·going to die [lost; L cut off].”
55 I called out ·to you [L your name], Lord,
    from the ·bottom [depth] of the pit [Ps. 130:1].
56 You heard ·me calling [L my voice], “Do not close your ears
    ·and ignore my gasps and shouts [to my cries for relief].”
57 You came near ·when [L in the day] I called to you;
    you said, “Don’t be afraid.”

58 Lord, ·you have taken my case [you defend/have defended me]
    and ·given me back [L redeem; redeemed] my life.
59 Lord, you have seen how I have been wronged.
    Now judge my case for me.
60 You have seen ·how my enemies took revenge on me [L all their vengeance]
    ·and made evil plans against me [L all their plots against me].

61 Lord, you ·have heard [hear] their ·insults [scorn]
    and all their ·evil plans [plots] against me.
62 The ·words [whispers; L lips] and ·thoughts [mumblings; murmurs] of ·my enemies [L those who rise up against me]
    are against me all the time.
63 Look! In ·everything they do [L their sitting and their rising up]
    they ·make fun of me with songs [sing mocking songs; Ps. 69:7–12].

64 Pay them back, Lord,
    ·for what they have done [L according to the acts of their hands].
65 Make them ·stubborn [L insolent of heart],
    and put your curse on them.
66 ·Chase [Pursue] them in anger, Lord,
    and destroy them from under ·your [L the Lord’s] heavens.

Psalm 34

Praise God Who Judges and Saves

David’s song from the time he ·acted crazy [acted mad/insane; L changed his mind/discernment] so Abimelech [C perhaps another name for Achish] would ·send [drive] him away, and David did leave [1 Sam. 21:10–15].

34 I will ·praise [bless] the Lord at all times;
    his praise is always ·on my lips [L in my mouth].
My ·whole being [soul] praises the Lord.
    The ·poor [humble] will hear and be glad.
·Glorify [Praise; Magnify] the Lord with me,
    and let us ·praise [L extol] his name together.

I ·asked the Lord for help [sought the Lord], and he answered me.
    He ·saved [rescued; T delivered] me from all that I feared.
Those who ·go [L look] to him for help are ·happy [radiant],
    and ·they [L their faces] are never ·disgraced [shamed].
This ·poor [afflicted] man [C someone in the congregation or the psalmist himself] ·called [prayed], and the Lord heard him
    and ·saved him from [gave him victory over] all his ·troubles [distress].
The angel of the Lord [91:11; Gen. 32:1–2; 2 Kin. 6:17; Matt. 4:5–6] camps around those who fear God [Prov. 1:7],
    and he saves them.

·Examine [L Taste] and see how good the Lord is.
    ·Happy [Blessed] is the person who ·trusts [finds refuge in] him.
You ·who belong to the Lord [holy ones], fear him [Prov. 1:7]!
    Those who fear him will ·have everything they need [not lack anything; 23:1].
10 Even lions [C the most noble wild beast] may get weak and hungry,
    but those who ·look to [seek] the Lord ·will have every [L do not lack any] good thing.
11 Children, come and listen to me.
    I will teach you ·to worship [L the fear of] the Lord.
12 ·You must do these things
    to enjoy life and have many happy days [L Who of you takes pleasure in life and loves days to experience good?].
13 You must ·not say evil things [L guard/keep your tongue from evil],
    and ·you must not tell lies [L your lips from deception].
14 ·Stop doing [L Turn aside from] evil and do good.
    ·Look for [Seek] peace and ·work for [pursue] it.

15 ·The Lord sees the [L The eyes of the Lord are on] ·good [righteous] people
    and ·listens to their prayers [L his ears attend to their cries for help].
16 But the ·Lord is [L face of the Lord is] against those who do evil;
    he ·makes the world forget them [L cuts memory of them off the earth].
17 ·The Lord hears good people when they [L They] cry out to him,
    and he saves them from all their ·troubles [distress].
18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,
    and he saves those whose spirits have been crushed.

19 People who ·do what is right may [are righteous] have many ·problems [afflictions],
    but the Lord ·will solve them [L saves them from them] all.
20 He will protect their very bones;
    not one of them will be broken.
21 Evil will kill the wicked;
    those who hate ·good [righteous] people will be judged guilty.
22 But the Lord ·saves [redeems; ransoms] his servants’ lives;
    no one who ·trusts [finds refuge in] him will be judged guilty.
