M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
A Copy of the Ten Commandments
10 “At that time, the Lord told me, ‘Chisel two tablets of stone for yourself just like the first ones, and then come up to me on the mountain. Also make for yourself a wooden chest. 2 I’ll write on the tablets what was[a] on the first tablets that you broke, and then you are to place them into the wooden chest.’ 3 So I made a chest out of acacia wood and chiseled two tablets of stone just like the first ones. Then I went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. 4 Then the Lord[b] inscribed on the tablets what he wrote before—that is, the Ten Commandments that the Lord declared to you on the mountain from the middle of the fire during the day of the assembly. And the Lord gave them to me. 5 Then I turned, went down the mountain, and placed the tablets in the chest that I had made. They are there now, just as the Lord commanded me.”
Aaron Dies and the Descendants of Levi are Appointed
6 “The Israelis traveled from the wells of the descendants of Jaakan to Moserah. Aaron died and was buried there. His son Eleazar succeeded him as priest. 7 From there they moved on to Gudgodah and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land with flowing streams. 8 At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord, to stand in the Lord’s presence, to serve, and to bless his name until this day. 9 That is why the descendants of Levi do not have a portion and an inheritance among their relatives. As for[c] the Lord, he is their inheritance, just as the Lord your God told them. 10 When I stood on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights as I did the first time, the Lord listened to me once again. The Lord was not willing to destroy you. 11 So the Lord told me, ‘Get up and proceed to lead[d] the people, so they may enter and take possession of the land that I promised to give their ancestors by an oath.’”
Love the Lord
12 “Now Israel, what does the Lord your God desire from you? Only this: fear him,[e] walk in all his ways, love him, serve him[f] with all your heart and in all your life,[g] 13 and observe his[h] commands and statutes that I’m commanding you today for your own good. 14 You see, heaven—even the highest heavens—belongs to the Lord, along with the earth and all that is in it, 15 yet the Lord committed himself to love your ancestors—and did so! He chose you—their descendants after them—from all the nations, as it is[i] today. 16 Therefore, circumcise your heart and stop being stubborn. 17 For the Lord your God is the God of all gods, the Lord of all lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who does not show favoritism or take bribes. 18 He executes justice for the orphan and the widows, loves the foreigner, and gives them food and clothing.”
Love Others
19 “You are to love the foreigner, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. 20 You are to fear the Lord your God and serve him. Cling to him and swear by his name. 21 He is the one you are to praise, because he is[j] your God who carried out those great and awesome things for you that you witnessed. 22 Your ancestors went down to Egypt with 70 people, but the Lord your God has now made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.”
God Avenges His Own
94 God of vengeance,
Lord God of vengeance,
display your splendor![a]
2 Stand up, judge of the earth,
and repay the proud.
3 How long will the wicked, Lord,
how long will the wicked continue to triumph?
4 When they speak, they spew arrogance.
Everyone who practices iniquity brags about it.[b]
5 Lord, they have crushed your people,
afflicting your heritage.
6 The wicked[c] kill widows and foreigners;
they murder orphans.
7 They say, “The Lord cannot see,
and the God of Jacob will not notice.”
8 Pay attention, you dull ones among the crowds!
You fools! Will you ever become wise?
9 The one who formed[d] the ear can hear, can he not?
The one who made the eyes can see, can he not?
10 The one who disciplines nations can rebuke them, can he not?
The one who teaches mankind can discern, can he not?
11 The Lord knows the thoughts of human beings—
that they are futile.
12 How blessed is the man whom you instruct, Lord,
whom you teach from your Law,
13 keeping him calm when times are troubled
until a pit has been dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not forsake his people;
he will not abandon his heritage.
15 Righteousness will be restored with justice,
and all the pure of heart will follow it.
16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked?
Who will stand for me against those who practice iniquity?
17 If the Lord had not been my helper,
I would have quickly become silent.
18 When I say that my foot is shaking,
your gracious love, Lord, will sustain me.
19 When my anxious inner thoughts become overwhelming,
your comfort encourages me.
20 Will destructive national leaders,[e]
who plan wicked things through misuse of the Law,
be allied with you?
21 They gather together against the righteous,
condemning the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord is my stronghold,
and my God, the rock, is my refuge.
23 He will repay them for their sin;
he will annihilate them because of their evil.
The Lord our God will annihilate them.
Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery
38 During that time,[a] Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. Then Amoz’s son Isaiah the prophet came to him and told him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Put your house in order, because you are going to die. You won’t recover.’”
2 Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord. 3 “Please, Lord,” he said, “Remember how I have walked before you faithfully and with a true heart, and I have done what pleases you.”[b] And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
4 Then this message[c] from the Lord came to Isaiah: 5 “Go tell Hezekiah, ‘This is what the Lord God of your ancestor David has to say: “I’ve heard your prayer and[d] I’ve seen your tears; so I will add fifteen years to your life. 6 I’ll save you and this city from the[e] king of Assyria, and I’ll defend this city, for my own sake and for my servant David’s sake.[f] 7 This is the Lord’s sign to you that the Lord will carry out this thing he has promised: 8 Watch! I will make the shadow on the steps of the upper[g] dial of Ahaz that marks the sun go ten steps backwards.”’”
Then the sunlight turned back on the dial the ten steps by which it had gone down.
Hezekiah’s Prayer
9 A composition by King Hezekiah of Judah, following his illness and recovery:
10 I said, “Must I leave in the prime of my life?
Must I be consigned to the control[h] of Sheol?[i]
Bitter are[j] my years!”
11 I said, “I won’t see the Lord[k] in the land of the living;
and[l] I’ll no longer observe human beings
among the denizens of the grave.[m]
12 My house has been plucked up and vanishes[n] from me
like a shepherd’s tent;
like a weaver, I’ve taken account of[o] my life,
and he cuts me off from the loom—
day and night you make an end of me.
13 I’ve been swept bare[p] until morning;
just like a lion, he breaks all my bones—
day and night you make an end of me.
14 Like a swallow or a crane I chirp,
I moan like a dove.
My eyes look weakly upward.
O Lord,[q] I am oppressed, so[r] stand up for me!
15 What can I say, so I tell myself,[s]
since he has done this to me?[t]
I will walk slowly all my years
because of my soul’s anguish.
16 “My Lord is against them, yet they live,
and among all of them who live is his spirit.[u]
Now you have restored me to health,
so let me live!
17 Yes, it was for my own good
that I suffered extreme anguish.[v]
But in love you have held back[w] my life
from the Pit[x] in which it has been confined;[y]
you have tossed all my sins
behind your back.
18 For Sheol[z] cannot thank you,
death cannot[aa] sing your praise;
and[ab] those who go down to the Pit[ac] cannot hope
for your faithfulness.
19 The living—yes the living—they thank you,
just as I am doing today;
fathers will tell their children
about your faithfulness.
20 The Lord will save me,[ad]
and we will play my music on strings
all the days of our lives
in the Lord’s Temple.[ae]
21 Now Isaiah had said, “Let them prepare[af] a poultice of figs and apply it to the boil, so that he may recover.”
22 Hezekiah also had asked, “What will be the sign for me to go up to the Lord’s Temple?”[ag]
The Vision of the Seventh Seal Opened
8 When the lamb[a] opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
The Vision of Seven Angels Given Seven Trumpets
2 Then I saw the seven angels who stand in God’s presence, and seven trumpets were given to them. 3 Another angel came with a gold censer and stood at the altar. He was given a large quantity of incense to offer on the gold altar before the throne, along with the prayers of all the saints. 4 The smoke from the incense and the prayers of the saints went up from the angel’s hand to God. 5 The angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it on the earth. Then there were peals of thunder, noises, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. 6 The seven angels who had the seven trumpets got ready to blow them.
The Vision of the First Four Trumpets
7 When the first angel blew his trumpet, hail and fire were mixed with blood and thrown on the earth. One-third of the earth was burned up, one-third of the trees was burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.
8 When the second angel blew his trumpet, something like a huge mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea. One-third of the sea turned into blood, 9 one-third of the creatures that were living in the sea died, and one-third of the ships was destroyed.
10 When the third angel blew his trumpet, a huge star blazing like a torch fell from heaven. It fell on one-third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood. One-third of the water turned into wormwood, and many people died from the water because it had turned bitter.
12 When the fourth angel blew his trumpet, one-third of the sun, one-third of the moon, and one-third of the stars were struck so that one-third of them turned dark. One-third of the day was kept from having light, as was the night.
The Vision of the Eagle Flying
13 Then I looked, and I heard an eagle flying overhead say in a loud voice,
“How terrible, how terrible, how terrible
for those living on the earth,
because of the blasts of the remaining trumpets
that the three angels are about to blow!”
