Chapter 40

The Dreams Interpreted. [a]Some time afterward, the royal cupbearer and baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt. Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, and he put them in custody in the house of the chief steward, the same jail where Joseph was confined. The chief steward assigned Joseph to them, and he became their attendant.

After they had been in custody for some time, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt who were confined in the jail both had dreams on the same night, each his own dream and each dream with its own meaning. When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they looked disturbed. So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were with him in custody in his master’s house, “Why do you look so troubled today?” They answered him, “We have had dreams, but there is no one to interpret them.” Joseph said to them, “Do interpretations not come from God? Please tell me the dreams.”(A)

Then the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. “In my dream,” he said, “I saw a vine in front of me, 10 and on the vine were three branches. It had barely budded when its blossoms came out, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; so I took the grapes, pressed them out into his cup, and put it in Pharaoh’s hand.” 12 Joseph said to him: “This is its interpretation. The three branches are three days; 13 within three days Pharaoh will single you out[b] and restore you to your post. You will be handing Pharaoh his cup as you formerly did when you were his cupbearer. 14 Only think of me when all is well with you, and please do me the great favor of mentioning me to Pharaoh, to get me out of this place. 15 The truth is that I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and I have not done anything here that they should have put me into a dungeon.”

16 When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to him: “I too had a dream. In it I had three bread baskets on my head; 17 in the top one were all kinds of bakery products for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.” 18 Joseph said to him in reply: “This is its interpretation. The three baskets are three days; 19 within three days Pharaoh will single you out and will impale you on a stake, and the birds will be eating your flesh.”

20 And so on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, when he gave a banquet to all his servants, he singled out the chief cupbearer and chief baker in the midst of his servants. 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his office, so that he again handed the cup to Pharaoh; 22 but the chief baker he impaled—just as Joseph had told them in his interpretation. 23 Yet the chief cupbearer did not think of Joseph; he forgot him.

Chapter 10

Marriage and Divorce. He set out from there and went into the district of Judea [and] across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered around him and, as was his custom, he again taught them. [a]The Pharisees approached and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” They were testing him.(A) He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?” They replied, “Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.”(B) But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.(C) For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother [and be joined to his wife],(D) and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” 10 In the house the disciples again questioned him about this. 11 (E)He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Blessing of the Children. 13 (F)And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.(G) 14 When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child[b] will not enter it.”(H) 16 Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.

The Rich Man. 17 (I)As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good?[c] No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.’”(J) 20 He replied and said to him, “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.” 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 22 At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

23 [d]Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”(K) 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to pass through [the] eye of [a] needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “We have given up everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel 30 who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. 31 But many that are first will be last, and [the] last will be first.”(L)

The Third Prediction of the Passion. 32 (M)They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went ahead of them. They were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside again, he began to tell them what was going to happen to him. 33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles 34 who will mock him, spit upon him, scourge him, and put him to death, but after three days he will rise.”

Ambition of James and John. 35 (N)Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 He replied, “What do you wish [me] to do for you?” 37 They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” 38 [e](O)Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 They said to him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. 42 [f]Jesus summoned them and said to them,(P) “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. 43 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; 44 whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The Blind Bartimaeus.[g] 46 They came to Jericho.(Q) And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. 47 On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me.” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; get up, he is calling you.” 50 He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. 51 Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” 52 Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

Chapter 6

Job’s First Reply. Then Job answered and said:

Ah, could my anguish but be measured
    and my calamity laid with it in the scales,
They would now outweigh the sands of the sea!
    Because of this I speak without restraint.
For the arrows of the Almighty are in me,(A)
    and my spirit drinks in their poison;
    the terrors of God are arrayed against me.
Does the wild donkey bray when it has grass?[a]
    Does the ox low over its fodder?
Can anything insipid be eaten without salt?
    Is there flavor in the white of an egg?
I refuse to touch them;
    they are like loathsome food to me.
Oh, that I might have my request,
    and that God would grant what I long for:
Even that God would decide to crush me,
    that he would put forth his hand and cut me off!
10 Then I should still have consolation
    and could exult through unremitting pain,
    because I have not transgressed the commands of the Holy One.
11 What strength have I that I should endure,
    and what is my limit that I should be patient?
12 Have I the strength of stones,
    or is my flesh of bronze?
13 Have I no helper,(B)
    and has my good sense deserted me?
14 A friend owes kindness to one in despair,
    though he has forsaken the fear of the Almighty.
15 My companions are undependable as a wadi,
    as watercourses that run dry in the wadies;
16 Though they may be black with ice,
    and with snow heaped upon them,
17 Yet once they flow, they cease to be;
    in the heat, they disappear from their place.
18 Caravans wander from their routes;
    they go into the wasteland and perish.
19 The caravans of Tema[b] search,
    the companies of Sheba have hopes;
20 They are disappointed, though they were confident;
    they come there and are frustrated.
21 It is thus that you have now become for me;[c]
    you see a terrifying thing and are afraid.
22 Have I said, “Give me something,
    make a bribe on my behalf from your possessions”?
23 Or “Deliver me from the hand of the enemy,
    redeem me from oppressors”?
24 Teach me, and I will be silent;
    make me understand how I have erred.
25 How painful honest words can be;
    yet how unconvincing is your argument!
26 Do you consider your words as proof,
    but the sayings of a desperate man as wind?
27 You would even cast lots for the orphan,
    and would barter over your friend!
28 Come, now, give me your attention;
    surely I will not lie to your face.
29 Think it over; let there be no injustice.
    Think it over; I still am right.
30 Is there insincerity on my tongue,
    or cannot my taste discern falsehood?

Romans 10

Chapter 10

[a]Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God on their behalf is for salvation.(A) I testify with regard to them that they have zeal for God, but it is not discerning.(B) For, in their unawareness of the righteousness that comes from God and their attempt to establish their own [righteousness], they did not submit to the righteousness of God.(C) For Christ is the end[b] of the law for the justification of everyone who has faith.(D)

[c]Moses writes about the righteousness that comes from [the] law, “The one who does these things will live by them.”(E) But the righteousness that comes from faith says,(F) “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will go up into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down) [d]or ‘Who will go down into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”(G) But what does it say?

“The word is near you,
    in your mouth and in your heart”(H)

(that is, the word of faith that we preach), for, if you confess[e] with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.(I) 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 For the scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.”(J) 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him.(K) 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”(L)

14 [f]But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach?(M) 15 And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written,(N) “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring [the] good news!”[g] 16 But not everyone has heeded the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what was heard from us?”(O) 17 Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.(P) 18 But I ask, did they not hear? Certainly they did; for

“Their voice has gone forth to all the earth,
    and their words to the ends of the world.”(Q)

19 But I ask, did not Israel understand?(R) First Moses says:

“I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation;
    with a senseless nation I will make you angry.”

20 (S)Then Isaiah speaks boldly and says:

“I was found [by] those who were not seeking me;
    I revealed myself to those who were not asking for me.”

21 But regarding Israel he says, “All day long I stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contentious people.”
