The Kings Conquered by Joshua
12 These are the kings of the land whom the Israelites[a] defeated, and of whose land they took possession beyond the Jordon to the east,[b] from the wadi[c] of Arnon up to Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah[d] to the east: 2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi[e] of Arnon, from the middle of the valley and half of Gilead, up to the Jabbok River,[f] which marks the border of the Ammonites;[g] 3 and the Arabah[h] up to the Kinnereth Sea[i] to the east, and as far as the sea of Arabah, the Salt Sea[j] to the east, in the direction of[k] Beth Jeshimoth, and to the area southward, at the foot of[l] the slopes of Pisgah;[m] 4 the territory of Og king of Bashan, one of the last of the Rephaites, who lived at Ashtaroth and Edrei 5 and ruled over Mount Hermon and Salecah and over all Bashan up to the border of the Geshurites[n] and the Maacathites,[o] and half of Gilead, as far as the border of Sihon king of Heshbon. 6 Moses Yahweh’s servant and the Israelites[p] defeated them; and Moses Yahweh’s servant gave it as a possession to the Reubenites,[q] the Gadites,[r] and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
The Kings Conquered by Moses
7 These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the Israelites[s] defeated beyond to the Jordan to the west, from Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon,[t] and up to Mount Halak, which rises to Seir. And Joshua gave it as a possession to the tribes of Israel according to their allotments, 8 in the hill country, the Shephelah,[u] the Arabah,[v] on the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the Negev;[w] the Hittites,[x] the Amorites,[y] the Canaanites,[z] the Perizzites,[aa] the Hivites,[ab] and the Jebusites:[ac]
9 the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;
10 the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;
11 the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;
12 the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;
13 the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;
14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one;
15 the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;
16 the king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;
17 the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;
18 the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;
19 the king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one;
20 the king of Shimron-meron, one; the king of Acshaph, one;
21 the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;
22 the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one;
23 the king of Dor in Naphath Dor, one; the king of Goiim for Gilgal, one;
24 the king of Tirzah, one; all the kings, thirty-one.
Land Still Remains to be Conquered
13 Now Joshua was old and advanced in years,[ad] and Yahweh said to him, “You are old and advanced in years,[ae] and very much of the land remains to be possessed. 2 This is the remaining land: all the regions of the Philistines, and all of the Geshurites,[af] 3 from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt,[ag] up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites,[ah] Ashdodites,[ai] Ashkelonites,[aj] Gittites,[ak] Ekronites,[al] and the Avvim. 4 In the south; all the land of the Canaanites,[am] and Mearah, which belongs to the Sidonians up to Aphek, to the border of the Amorites,[an] 5 and the land of the Gebalites, and all the Lebanon,[ao] toward the east,[ap] from Baal Gad at the foot of[aq] Mount Hermon up to Lebo-Hamath; 6 all the inhabitants of the hill country, from the Lebanon[ar] up to Misrephoth Maim, and all the Sidonians. I will drive them out from before the Israelites;[as] only allocate it to Israel as an inheritance just as I have commanded you. 7 Therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”
8 With it[at] the Reubenites,[au] and the Gadites[av] received their inheritance, which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses Yahweh’s servant gave to them: 9 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi[aw] of Arnon, and the city which is in the middle of the wadi, and all the plateau from Medeba up to Dibon; 10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites,[ax] who reigned in Heshbon up to the border of the Ammonites;[ay] 11 and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurite[az] and the Maacathites,[ba] all of Mount Hermon,[bb] and Bashan up to Salecah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei—he was left over from the survivors[bc] of the Rephaim; these Moses had defeated and driven out. 13 But the Israelites[bd] did not drive out the Geshurites[be] or the Maacathites;[bf] Geshur and Maacah live among Israel to this day. 14 Only the tribe of Levites[bg] Moses did not give an inheritance; the offerings made by fire to Yahweh the God of Israel are their[bh] inheritance, just as he promised to them.[bi]
Reuben’s Inheritance
15 Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the descendants[bj] of Reuben according to their families. 16 Their territory was from Aroer, which was on the edge of the wadi[bk] of Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plateau by Medeba; 17 Heshbon and its cities that are on the plateau; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, and Zereth Shahar on the hill of the valley; 20 Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth; 21 all of the cities of the plateau, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites,[bl] who reigned in Heshbon and whom Moses defeated with the leaders of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon who dwelled in the land. 22 In addition to their slain, the Israelites[bm] killed with the sword Balaam son of Beor, who practiced divination. 23 And the border of the descendants[bn] of Reuben was the Jordan and its banks.[bo] This was the inheritance of the descendants[bp] of Reuben according to their families, the cities, and their villages.
Gad’s Inheritance
24 Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the descendants[bq] of Gad, according to their families. 25 Their territory was Jazer and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites[br] up to Aroer, which is east of Rabbah;[bs] 26 and from Heshbon up to Ramah-Mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim up to the territory to Debir; 27 in the valley of Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, Zaphon, and the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan and its banks,[bt] up to the lower end of the Kinnereth Sea[bu] beyond the Jordan to the east. 28 This is the inheritance of the Gadites[bv] according to their families, the cities, and their villages.
The Half-Tribe of Manasseh’s Inheritance
29 Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; it was for the half-tribe of the descendants[bw] of Manasseh according to their families. 30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the settlements[bx] of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31 and half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth, Edrei, and the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan; these were allotted to the children of Makir son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Makir according to their families. 32 These are the territories that Moses gave as an inheritance on the desert-plateau of Moab, beyond the Jordan, east of Jericho. 33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses did not give an inheritance; Yahweh the God of Israel, he is their inheritance, just as he promised them.[by]
A Song of God’s Majesty and Love
A praise of David.[a]
145 I will exalt you, my God, O king,
and I will bless[b] your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
3 Great is Yahweh, and very worthy of praise,
and his greatness is unsearchable.
4 One generation will laud your works to another,
and will declare your mighty deeds.
5 On the splendor of the glory of your majesty,
and on your wonderful deeds, I will meditate.
6 And they will speak of the power of your awesome deeds,[c]
and I will tell of your greatness.[d]
7 They will utter [e] the renown of your abundant goodness,
and they will proclaim with joy your righteousness.
8 Yahweh is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger[f] and great in loyal love.
9 Yahweh is good to all,
and his mercies are over all his works.
10 All your works will praise you, O Yahweh,
and your faithful ones will bless[g] you.
11 They will speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and talk of your power,
12 to make known to the children of humankind his mighty deeds,
and the glory of the majesty of his kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.[h]
14 Yahweh upholds all who are falling,
and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look hopefully to you,
and you give them their food in due time,
16 opening your hand,
and satisfying the desire of every living creature.
17 Yahweh is righteous in all his ways,
and loyal in all his works.
18 Yahweh is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
he also hears their cry for help, and saves them.
20 Yahweh protects all those who love him,
but all the wicked he will exterminate.
21 My mouth will speak the praise of Yahweh,
and all flesh will bless his holy name
forever and ever.
6 Flee for safety, O children of Benjamin,
from the midst of Jerusalem.
And in Tekoa blow a horn,
and on Beth-haccherem lift up a signal,
for evil looks down from the north,
and a great destruction.
2 The lovely and the delicate,
the daughter of Jerusalem, I will destroy.
3 Shepherds and their flocks will come against her,
they will pitch their tents against her all around,
they will pasture, each his portion.[a]
4 Sanctify[b] war against her.
Arise, and let us attack at noon.
Woe to us, for the day turns,
for the shadows of evening are lengthened.
5 Arise, and let us attack by night,
and let us destroy her citadel fortresses.”
6 For thus says Yahweh of hosts,
“Cut down trees and heap up a siege ramp against Jerusalem.
This is the city that must be punished,
its oppression is in its midst.
7 As a water well keeps its water cool,
so she keeps cool her wickedness.
Violence and destruction are heard within her,
sickness and wounds[c] are continually before me.[d]
8 Be warned, O Jerusalem,
lest I turn away from you in disgust,
lest I make you a desolation,
a land that is not inhabited.”
9 Thus says Yahweh of hosts:
“They will thoroughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine,
turn back your hand over the branches like a grape-gatherer.
10 To whom shall I speak and admonish,
that they may hear?
Look, their ears are closed,[e]
and they are not able to listen attentively.
Look, the word of Yahweh is to them an object of scorn,
they do not delight in it.
11 But I am full with the wrath of Yahweh,
I struggle to hold it[f] in.
Pour it out on the children[g] in the street,
and on the assemblies[h] of young men at the same time.
For even husband with wife will get trapped,
the old with him who is full of days.
12 And their houses will be turned over to others,
their fields and their wives together.
For I will stretch out my hand
against the inhabitants of the land,” declares[i] Yahweh.
13 “For from the smallest of them to the greatest of them,
everyone[j] makes profit for unlawful gain.
And from the prophet to the priest,
everyone[k] practices deceit.
14 And they have treated the wound of my people lightly,
saying,[l] ‘Peace, peace,’ but there is no peace.
15 Have they acted ashamed, for they have committed a detestable thing?
Not at all, nor were they ashamed; they did not know to feel humiliated.
Therefore[m] they will fall among those who fall at the time I punish them,
they will stumble,” says Yahweh.
16 Thus says Yahweh: “Stand at the roads and look,
and ask for the ancient paths, where the way of the good is,
and walk in it, and find rest for your inner selves.[n]
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’[o]
17 And I raised up watchmen over you:
‘Listen attentively to the sound of a horn.’
But they said, ‘We will not listen attentively.’
18 Therefore[p] hear, O nations, and know, O community,
what will happen to them.[q]
19 Hear, O earth,
look, I am about to bring disaster to this people,
the fruit of their plans,
because they have not listened attentively to my words,
and my teaching, they have rejected it also.
20 What is this to me?
Frankincense comes from Sheba,
and the precious spice reed from a distant land.
Your burnt offerings are not acceptable,[r]
your sacrifices are not pleasing to me.”
21 Therefore[s] thus says Yahweh:
“Look, I am about to put before this people stumbling blocks,
and they will stumble against them,
fathers and children together,
neighbor and his friend will perish.”
22 Thus says Yahweh:
“Look, a people is coming from the land of the north,
a great nation is woken up from the farthest part of the earth.
23 The bow and the short sword they grasp are cruel,
and they show no mercy.
Their sound roars like the sea, and on horses they ride,
drawn up like a man for battle against you, O daughter of Zion.”
24 We have heard news of it,
our hands grow slack,
anxiety has grasped us,
pain as a woman who gives birth.
25 You must not go out into the field,
and you must not walk on the road,
for the enemy has a sword,[t]
terror is all around.
26 O daughter of my people,
gird yourself with sackcloth,
and roll about in the ashes in mourning,
a mourning ceremony as for an only child.
Make for yourself wailing of bitterness,
for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.
27 “I have made you an assayer among my people, a fortification,
so that you may know and put to the test their ways.[u]
28 All of them are stubborn rebels,
going about talking slander.
They are bronze and iron,
they are all behaving corruptly.
29 The bellows[v] are burned up,
lead is consumed by fire.
In vain[w] he keeps on refining,[x]
but the wicked are not torn apart.
30 They are called[y] rejected silver,
For Yahweh has rejected them.”
The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man—the master of the house—who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 And after[a] coming to an agreement with the workers for a denarius per day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace. 4 And to those people he said, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is right.’ 5 So they went. Going out[b] again about the sixth and ninth hour he did the same thing. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and[c] found others standing there and said to them, ‘Why are you standing here the whole day unemployed?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go also into the vineyard.’ 8 And when[d] evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and pay them their[e] wages, beginning from the last up to the first.’ 9 And when the ones hired about the eleventh hour came, they received a denarius apiece. 10 And when[f] the first came, they thought that they would receive more, and they also received a denarius apiece. 11 And when they[g] received it,[h] they began to complain[i] against the master of the house, 12 saying, ‘These last people worked one hour and you made them equal to us who have endured the burden of the day and the burning heat!’ 13 But he answered one of them and[j] said, ‘Friend, I am not doing you wrong. Did you not come to an agreement with me for a denarius? 14 Take what is yours and go! But I want to give to this last person the same as I gave[k] to you also. 15 Is it not[l] permitted for me to do whatever I want with what is mine? Or is your eye evil because I am generous?’ 16 Thus the last will be first and the first last.”
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection a Third Time
17 And as[m] Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples by themselves and said to them on the way, 18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death, 19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to mock him[n] and flog him[o] and crucify him,[p] and on the third day he will be raised.”
A Request by the Mother of James and John
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and[q] kneeling down she asked[r] something from him. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your kingdom.” 22 But Jesus answered and[s] said, “You do not know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine[t] to grant, but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
24 And when[u] the ten heard this,[v] they were indignant concerning the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to himself and[w] said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions exercise authority over them. 26 It will not be like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be most prominent among you must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Two Blind Men Healed at Jericho
29 And as[x] they were going out of Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30 And behold, there were two blind men sitting beside the road. When they[y] heard that Jesus was passing by, they called out, saying, “Lord, have mercy on us,[z] Son of David!” 31 And the crowd rebuked them so that they would be quiet. But they called out all the more, saying, “Lord, have mercy on us,[aa] Son of David!” 32 And Jesus stopped,[ab] called them, and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him, “Lord, that our eyes be opened!” 34 And having compassion, Jesus touched their eyes, and immediately they received their sight and followed him.
