Numbers 12-13

Miriam and Aaron Speak Against Moses

12 Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had taken as a wife (for he had taken a (A)Cushite woman); (B)and they said, “Has Yahweh indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?” And Yahweh heard it. (Now the man Moses was (C)very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.) Suddenly Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron and to Miriam, “You three come out to the tent of meeting.” So the three of them came out. (D)Then Yahweh came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the doorway of the tent, and He called [a]Aaron and Miriam. And then both came forward, and He said,

“Hear now My words:
If there is a prophet among you,
I, Yahweh, shall make Myself known to him in a (E)vision.
I shall speak with him in a (F)dream.
Not so, with (G)My servant Moses,
(H)He is faithful in all My household;
(I)With him I speak mouth to mouth,
Indeed clearly, and not in riddles,
And he beholds (J)the form of Yahweh.
Why then were you not afraid
To speak against My servant, against Moses?”

So the anger of Yahweh burned against them, and (K)He went away. 10 But the cloud withdrew from over the tent, and behold, (L)Miriam was leprous, as (M)white as snow. And Aaron turned toward Miriam, and behold, she was leprous. 11 Then Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, I beg you, (N)do not place this sin on us, in which we have acted foolishly and in which we have sinned. 12 Oh, do not let her be like one dead, whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes from his mother’s womb!” 13 And Moses cried out to Yahweh, saying, “O God, (O)heal her, I pray!” 14 But Yahweh said to Moses, “If her father had but (P)spit in her face, would she not bear her dishonor for seven days? Let her be shut up for seven days (Q)outside the camp, and afterward she may be received again.” 15 So (R)Miriam was shut up outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not set out until Miriam was received again.

16 Afterward, however, the people set out from Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran.

The Spies Sent into Canaan

13 Then (S)Yahweh spoke to Moses saying, (T)Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give to the sons of Israel; you shall send a man from each of their fathers’ tribes, every one a leader among them.” So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the [b]command of Yahweh, all of them men who were heads of the sons of Israel. These then were their names:

from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
from the tribe of Judah, (U)Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
from the tribe of Ephraim, (V)Hoshea the son of Nun;
from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
11 from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land; but Moses called (W)Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.

17 So Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up [c]there into (X)the [d]Negev; then go up into the hill country. 18 And see what the land is like, and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many. 19 And how is the land in which they live, is it good or bad? And how are the cities in which they live, are they [e]like open camps or with fortifications? 20 (Y)And how is the land, is it fat or lean? Are there trees in it or not? [f]Make an (Z)effort then to get some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes.

21 So they went up and spied out the land from (AA)the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, [g](AB)at Lebo-hamath. 22 And they had gone up into (AC)the Negev and [h]came to Hebron where (AD)Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the [i]descendants of (AE)Anak were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before (AF)Zoan in Egypt.)

23 Then they came to the [j]valley of [k](AG)Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men with some of the pomegranates and the figs. 24 That place was called the valley of [l]Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down from there.

The Spies Recount What They Saw

25 Then they returned from spying out the land, at the end of forty days, 26 and went and came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel [m]in the wilderness of Paran, at (AH)Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 Thus they recounted to him and said, “We went in to the land where you sent us; and (AI)it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and (AJ)this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless, (AK)the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw (AL)the [n]descendants of Anak there. 29 Amalek is living in the land of (AM)the Negev and the Hittites and the Jebusites and (AN)the Amorites are living in the hill country, and (AO)the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.”

30 Then Caleb quieted the people [o]before Moses and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we are surely able to overcome it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “(AP)We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us.” 32 So they gave out to the sons of Israel (AQ)a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land, which we have passed through to spy out on, is (AR)a land that devours its [p]inhabitants; and (AS)all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size. 33 There also we saw the (AT)Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and (AU)we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

Psalm 49

Why Should I Fear in Days of Evil?

For the choir director. Of the sons of Korah. A Psalm.

49 (A)Hear this, all peoples;
Give ear, all (B)inhabitants of the world,
Both [a](C)low and [b]high,
Rich and poor together.
My mouth will (D)speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart will be (E)discernment.
I will incline my ear to (F)a proverb;
(G)I will [c]express my (H)riddle on the harp.

Why should I (I)fear in days of evil,
When the iniquity of my [d]supplanters surrounds me,
Even those who (J)trust in their wealth
And boast in the abundance of their riches?
Truly, no man can (K)redeem his brother;
He cannot give to God a (L)ransom for him—
For (M)the redemption price for their soul is costly,
And it ceases forever—
That he should (N)live on eternally,
That he should not (O)see [e]corruption.

10 For he sees that even (P)wise men die;
The [f](Q)fool and the senseless alike perish
And (R)leave their wealth to others.
11 Their [g](S)inner thought is that their houses (T)are forever
And their dwelling places [h]from generation to generation;
They have (U)called their lands after their own names.
12 But (V)man in his honor will not endure;
He is like the animals that [i]perish.

13 This is the (W)way of those who are foolish,
And of those after them who (X)are pleased [j]with their words. [k]Selah.
14 As sheep they are appointed (Y)for Sheol;
Death will shepherd them;
And the (Z)upright shall have dominion over them in the morning,
And their form shall be for Sheol (AA)to consume,
Far away from his habitation.
15 But God will (AB)redeem my soul from the [l]power of Sheol,
For (AC)He will receive me. Selah.

16 Do not be afraid (AD)when a man becomes rich,
When the [m]glory of his house increases;
17 For when he dies he will not (AE)take any of it;
His [n]glory will not descend after him.
18 For while he lives he (AF)blesses his soul—
And men will praise you when you do well for yourself—
19 But his soul shall (AG)go to the generation of his fathers;
They will eternally not see (AH)light.
20 (AI)Man in his honor, but who does not understand,
Is (AJ)like the animals that [o]perish.

Isaiah 2

Yahweh Will Judge the Nations

The word which (A)Isaiah the son of Amoz beheld concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

Now it will be that
(B)In the last days
The (C)mountain of the house of Yahweh
Will be established [a]as the head of the mountains,
And will be lifted up above the hills;
And (D)all the nations will stream to it.
And many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of Yahweh,
To the house of the God of Jacob,
That He may instruct us [b]from His ways
And that we may walk in His paths.”
For (E)from Zion the [c]law will go forth
And the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem.
And He will judge between the nations,
And will [d]render decisions for many peoples;
And (F)they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.
(G)Nation will not lift up sword against nation,
And never again will they learn war.

Yahweh Will Have a Day of Reckoning

Come, (H)house of Jacob, and let us walk in the (I)light of Yahweh.
For You have (J)abandoned Your people, the house of Jacob,
Because they are filled with influences from the east,
And they are soothsayers (K)like the Philistines,
And they (L)strike bargains with the children of foreigners.
Their land has also been filled with silver and gold,
And there is no end to their treasures;
Their land has also been filled with (M)horses,
And there is no end to their chariots.
Their land has also been (N)filled with idols;
They worship the (O)work of their hands,
That which their fingers have made.
So (P)the common man has been bowed down,
And the man of importance has been made low,
But (Q)do not forgive them.
10 (R)Enter the rock and hide in the dust
(S)From the dread of Yahweh and from the splendor of His majesty.
11 The [e](T)lofty look of [f]man will be made low,
And the [g](U)men made high will be bowed down,
And Yahweh alone will be exalted in that day.

12 For Yahweh of hosts will have a day of reckoning
Against (V)everyone who is proud and high
And against everyone who is lifted up,
That he may be made low.
13 And it will be against all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up,
Against all the (W)oaks of Bashan,
14 Against all the (X)high mountains,
Against all the hills that are lifted up,
15 Against every (Y)lofty tower,
Against every fortified wall,
16 Against all the (Z)ships of Tarshish
And against all the desirable craft.
17 The loftiness of [h]man will be bowed down,
And the [i]men who are high will be made low;
And Yahweh alone will be exalted in that day,
18 But the (AA)idols will completely vanish.
19 Men will (AB)go into caves of the rocks
And into holes of the [j]ground
Before the dread of Yahweh
And the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises (AC)to make the earth tremble.
20 In that day men will (AD)cast away to the moles and the (AE)bats
Their idols of silver and their idols of gold,
Which they made for themselves to worship,
21 In order to (AF)go into the caverns of the rocks and the clefts of the cliffs
Before the dread of Yahweh and the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises to make the earth tremble.
22 [k](AG)Stop regarding [l]man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils;
For [m](AH)why should he be esteemed?

Hebrews 10

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

10 For the Law, since it has only (A)a shadow of (B)the good things to come and not the very [a]form of things, [b]can (C)never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, (D)make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have (E)consciousness of sins? But (F)in [c]those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. For it is (G)impossible for the (H)blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, (I)when He comes into the world, He says,

(J)Sacrifice and offering You have not desired,
But (K)a body You have prepared for Me;
(L)In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have taken no pleasure.
(M)Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come,
In (N)the scroll of the book it is written of Me,
To do Your will, O God.’”

After saying above, “(O)Sacrifices and offerings and (P)burnt offerings and sacrifices (Q)for sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law), then He [d]said, “(R)Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second. 10 By [e]this will we have been (S)sanctified through (T)the offering of (U)the body of Jesus Christ (V)once for all.

11 And every priest stands daily ministering and (W)offering time after time the same sacrifices, which (X)can never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered one sacrifice (Y)for [f]sins (Z)for all time, (AA)sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time (AB)until His enemies are put as a footstool for His feet. 14 For by one offering He has (AC)perfected (AD)for all time those who are being sanctified. 15 And (AE)the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,

16 (AF)This is the covenant that I will make with them
After those days, says the [g]Lord:
I will put My laws upon their heart,
And on their mind I will write them,”

He then says,

17 (AG)And their sins and their lawless deeds
I will remember no more.”

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.

A New and Living Way

19 Therefore, brothers, since we (AH)have confidence to (AI)enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by (AJ)a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through (AK)the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have (AL)a great priest (AM)over the house of God, 22 let us (AN)draw near with a [h]sincere heart in (AO)full assurance of faith, having our hearts (AP)sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies (AQ)washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the (AR)confession of our (AS)hope without wavering, for (AT)He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how (AU)to stimulate one another to love and (AV)good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own (AW)assembling together, as is the habit of some, but (AX)encouraging one another, and all the more as you see (AY)the day drawing near.

Warning Against Willful Sin

26 For if we go on (AZ)sinning willfully after receiving (BA)the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a terrifying expectation of (BB)judgment and (BC)the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28 (BD)Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy by the mouth of two or three witnesses. 29 (BE)How much worse punishment do you think he will deserve (BF)who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as defiled (BG)the blood of the covenant (BH)by which he was sanctified, and has (BI)insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “(BJ)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “(BK)The [i]Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a (BL)terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the (BM)living God.

32 But remember (BN)the former days, [j]when, after being (BO)enlightened, you endured a great (BP)conflict of sufferings, 33 partly by being (BQ)made a public spectacle through reproaches and afflictions, and partly by becoming (BR)sharers with those who were so treated. 34 For you also (BS)showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted with (BT)joy the seizure of your possessions, knowing that you have for yourselves (BU)a better and lasting possession. 35 Therefore, do not throw away that (BV)confidence of yours, which has a great (BW)reward. 36 For you have need of (BX)endurance, so that when you have (BY)done the will of God, you may (BZ)receive the promise.

37 (CA)For yet in a very little while,
(CB)He who is coming will come, and will not delay.
38 (CC)But My righteous one shall live by faith,
And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.

39 But [k]we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the [l]preserving of the soul.
