Psalm 9-16

Yahweh Will Judge the World in Righteousness

For the choir director. [a]Almuth-labben. A Psalm of David.

Aleph

[b]I will give thanks to Yahweh with all (A)my heart;
I will (B)recount all Your [c]wondrous deeds.

Aleph

I will be glad and (C)exult in You;
I will (D)sing praise to Your name, O (E)Most High.

Beth

When my enemies turn back,
They stumble and (F)perish before You.
For You have (G)maintained my [d]justice and my cause;
You have sat on the throne [e](H)judging righteously.

Gimel

You have (I)rebuked the nations, You have made the wicked perish;
You have (J)blotted out their name forever and ever.

He

[f]The enemy has come to an end in perpetual [g]ruins,
And You have uprooted the cities;
The very (K)memory of them has perished.

Vav

But (L)Yahweh [h]abides forever;
He has established His (M)throne for judgment,

Vav

And He will (N)judge the world in righteousness;
He will render justice for the peoples with equity.

Vav

[i]Yahweh also will be a (O)stronghold for the oppressed,
A stronghold in times of [j]distress;

Vav

10 And [k]those who (P)know Your name will put their trust in You,
For You, O Yahweh, have not (Q)forsaken those who seek You.

Zayin

11 Sing praises to Yahweh, who (R)abides in Zion;
(S)Declare among the peoples His acts.
12 For (T)He who [l]requires blood remembers them;
He does not forget (U)the cry of the afflicted.

Heth

13 Be gracious to me, O Yahweh;
See my affliction from those (V)who hate me,
You who (W)lift me up from the gates of death,
14 That I may recount (X)all Your praises,
That in the gates of the daughter of Zion
I may (Y)rejoice in Your [m]salvation.

Teth

15 The nations have sunk down (Z)in the pit which they have made;
In the (AA)net which they hid, their own foot has been caught.
16 Yahweh has (AB)made Himself known;
He has (AC)executed judgment.
In the work of his own hands the wicked is snared. [n]Higgaion [o]Selah.

Yodh

17 The wicked will [p](AD)return to Sheol,
Even all the nations who (AE)forget God.

Kaph

18 For the (AF)needy will not always be forgotten,
Nor the (AG)hope of the afflicted perish forever.
19 (AH)Arise, O Yahweh, do not let man prevail;
Let the nations be (AI)judged before You.
20 Put them (AJ)in fear, O Yahweh;
Let the nations know that they are (AK)but men. Selah.

Do Not Forget the Afflicted

Lamedh

10 [q]Why (AL)do You stand afar off, O Yahweh?
Why (AM)do You hide [r]Yourself in times of distress?
In his (AN)lofty pride the wicked [s]hotly pursues the afflicted;
[t]Let them be (AO)caught in the thoughts which they have devised.

For the wicked (AP)boasts of his (AQ)soul’s desire,
And [u]the greedy man curses and (AR)spurns Yahweh.
The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, (AS)does not seek Him.
All his [v]thoughts are, “(AT)There is no God.”

His ways [w](AU)prosper at all times;
Your judgments are on high, (AV)out of his sight;
As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them.
He says in his heart, “(AW)I will not be shaken;
[x]From generation to generation (AX)I will not be in adversity.”

Pe

His (AY)mouth is full of curses and deceit and (AZ)oppression;
(BA)Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.

Ayin

He sits in the [y](BB)places of the villages where one lies in wait;
In the hiding places he (BC)kills the innocent;
His eyes [z]stealthily watch for the [aa](BD)unfortunate.
He lies in wait in a hiding place as (BE)a lion in his [ab]lair;
He (BF)lies in wait to catch (BG)the afflicted;
He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his (BH)net.
10 He [ac]crouches, he [ad]bows down,
And the [ae]unfortunate fall [af]by his mighty ones.
11 He (BI)says in his heart, “God has forgotten;
He has hidden His face; He will never see it.”

Qoph

12 Arise, O Yahweh; O God, (BJ)lift up Your hand.
(BK)Do not forget the afflicted.
13 Why has the wicked (BL)spurned God?
He has said in his heart, “You will not require it.”

Resh

14 You have seen it, for You have beheld (BM)mischief and vexation to [ag]take it into Your hand.
The [ah](BN)unfortunate commits himself to You;
You have been the (BO)helper of the orphan.

Shin

15 (BP)Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer,
[ai](BQ)Seek out his wickedness until You find none.

16 Yahweh is (BR)King forever and ever;
(BS)Nations have perished from His land.

Tav

17 O Yahweh, You have heard the (BT)desire of the [aj]humble;
You will (BU)strengthen their heart, (BV)You will cause Your ear to give heed
18 To give justice to the (BW)orphan and the (BX)oppressed,
So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause (BY)terror.

Yahweh Is in His Holy Temple

For the choir director. Of David.

11 In Yahweh I (BZ)take refuge;
How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your (CA)mountain;
For, behold, the wicked (CB)bend the bow,
They [ak](CC)make ready their arrow upon the string
To (CD)shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
If the (CE)foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”

Yahweh is in His (CF)holy temple; [al]Yahweh’s (CG)throne is in heaven;
His (CH)eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
Yahweh (CI)tests the righteous,
But (CJ)the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
May He (CK)rain [am]snares upon the wicked;
(CL)Fire and brimstone and (CM)burning wind will be the portion of (CN)their cup.
For Yahweh is (CO)righteous, (CP)He loves [an]righteousness;
The upright will (CQ)behold His face.

Yahweh Will Set the Needy in Safety

For the choir director. According to the [ao]Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

12 Save, O Yahweh, for (CR)the holy man ceases to be,
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
They (CS)speak worthlessness to one another;
With a (CT)flattering lip and with a double heart they speak.
May Yahweh cut off all flattering lips,
The tongue that (CU)speaks great things;
Who (CV)have said, “With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are [ap]our own; who is lord over us?”
“Because of the (CW)devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now (CX)I will arise,” says Yahweh; “I will (CY)set him in the [aq]safety for which he [ar]longs.”

The (CZ)words of Yahweh are pure words;
As silver (DA)tried in a furnace on the ground, refined seven times.
You, O Yahweh, will keep them;
You will (DB)guard him from this generation forever.
The (DC)wicked strut about on every side
When [as](DD)vileness is exalted among the sons of men.

How Long, O Yahweh?

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

13 How long, O Yahweh? Will You (DE)forget me forever?
How long (DF)will You hide Your face from me?
How long shall I (DG)take counsel in my soul,
Having (DH)sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

(DI)Look and answer me, O Yahweh my God;
(DJ)Give light to my eyes, lest I (DK)sleep the sleep of death,
Lest my enemy (DL)says, “I have overcome him,”
And (DM)my adversaries rejoice that I am shaken.

But I have (DN)trusted in Your lovingkindness;
My heart shall (DO)rejoice in Your salvation.
I will (DP)sing to Yahweh,
Because He has (DQ)dealt bountifully with me.

There Is No One Who Does Good

For the choir director. Of David.

14 The [at]wicked fool (DR)says in his heart, “There is no God.”
They act corruptly, they commit abominable [au]deeds;
There is (DS)no one who does good.
Yahweh (DT)looks down from heaven upon the sons of men
To see if there is anyone who [av](DU)has insight,
Anyone who (DV)seeks after God.
They have all (DW)turned aside, altogether they have become [aw]worthless;
There is (DX)no one who does good, not even one.

Do all the workers of iniquity (DY)not know,
Who (DZ)eat up my people as they eat bread,
And (EA)do not call upon Yahweh?
There they are in great dread,
For God is with the (EB)righteous generation.
You would put to shame the counsel of the afflicted,
But Yahweh is his (EC)refuge.

Oh, that (ED)the salvation of Israel [ax]would come out of Zion!
When Yahweh [ay](EE)restores His captive people,
May Jacob rejoice, may Israel be glad.

Who May Dwell on Your Holy Mountain?

A Psalm of David.

15 O Yahweh, who may [az]sojourn (EF)in Your tent?
Who may dwell on Your (EG)holy mountain?
He who (EH)walks blamelessly, and works righteousness,
And (EI)speaks truth in his heart.
He (EJ)does not slander [ba]with his tongue,
Nor (EK)does evil to his neighbor,
Nor (EL)takes up a reproach against his friend;
In [bb]whose eyes a reprobate is despised,
But [bc]who (EM)honors those who fear Yahweh;
He (EN)swears to his own hurt and does not change;
He (EO)does not put out his money [bd]at interest,
Nor (EP)does he take a bribe against the innocent.
(EQ)He who does these things will never be shaken.

You Will Not Forsake My Soul

A [be]Mikhtam of David.

16 (ER)Keep me, O God, for (ES)I take refuge in You.
O my soul, you have said to Yahweh, “You are [bf]my Lord;
I (ET)have no good without You.”
As for the [bg](EU)saints who are in the earth,
They are the majestic ones (EV)in whom is all my delight.
The [bh](EW)pains of those who have [bi]bartered for another god will be multiplied;
I shall not pour out their drink offerings of (EX)blood,
Nor will I (EY)take their names upon my lips.

Yahweh is the (EZ)portion of my inheritance and my (FA)cup;
You support my (FB)lot.
The (FC)lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
Indeed, my inheritance is (FD)beautiful to me.

I will bless Yahweh who has (FE)counseled me;
Indeed, my [bj](FF)mind instructs me in the night.
(FG)I have (FH)set Yahweh continually before me;
Because He is (FI)at my right hand, (FJ)I will not be shaken.
Therefore (FK)my heart is glad and (FL)my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will (FM)dwell securely.
10 For You (FN)will not forsake my soul to Sheol;
You will not (FO)give Your [bk]Holy One over to see [bl]corruption.
11 You will make known to me (FP)the path of life;
In (FQ)Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are (FR)pleasures forever.
