Jesus’ Warning

16 (A)These things I have spoken to you so that you will not [a]be (B)led into sin. They will [b](C)ban you from the synagogue, yet (D)an hour is coming for everyone (E)who kills you to think that he is offering a [c]service to God. These things they will do (F)because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have spoken to you, (G)so that when their hour comes, you [d]may remember that I told you of them. However, I did not say these things to you (H)at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Holy Spirit Promised

“But now (I)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘(J)Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (K)grief has filled your heart. But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the [e](L)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, (M)I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment: regarding sin, (N)because they do not believe in Me; 10 and regarding (O)righteousness, because (P)I am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me; 11 (Q)and regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. 13 But when He, (R)the Spirit of truth, comes, He will (S)guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will (T)glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 (U)All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.

Jesus’ Death and Resurrection Foretold

16 (V)A little while, and (W)you no longer are going to see Me; and again a little while, and (X)you will see Me.” 17 So some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He is telling us, (Y)A little while, and you are not going to see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because (Z)I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” 19 (AA)Jesus knew that they wanted to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you are not going to see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Truly, truly I say to you that (AB)you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but (AC)your grief will be turned into joy! 21 (AD)Whenever a woman is in labor she has [f]pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a [g]child has been born into the world. 22 Therefore (AE)you too have grief now; but (AF)I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you.

Prayer Promises

23 And (AG)on that day (AH)you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly I say to you, (AI)if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. 24 (AJ)Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your (AK)joy may be made full.

25 “These things I have spoken to you in (AL)figures of speech; (AM)an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 (AN)On that day (AO)you will ask in My name, and I am not saying to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; 27 for (AP)the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and (AQ)have believed that (AR)I came forth from the Father. 28 (AS)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and (AT)going to the Father.”

29 His disciples *said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and are not [h]using any (AU)figure of speech. 30 Now we know that You know all things, and that You have no need for anyone to question You; this is why we (AV)believe that You (AW)came forth from God.” 31 Jesus replied to them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (AX)an hour is coming, and has already come, for (AY)you to be scattered, each to (AZ)his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet (BA)I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you so that (BB)in Me you may have peace. (BC)In the world you have tribulation, but (BD)take courage; (BE)I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 Jesus spoke these things; and (BF)raising His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; (BG)glorify Your Son, so that the Son may glorify You, just as (BH)You gave Him authority over all [i]mankind, so that [j](BI)to all whom You have given Him, (BJ)He may give eternal life. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, (BK)the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom (BL)You have sent. (BM)I glorified You on the earth [k](BN)by accomplishing the work which You have given Me to do. And now You, Father, (BO)glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had (BP)with You before the world existed.

(BQ)I have revealed Your name to the men whom (BR)You gave Me out of the world; they were (BS)Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have (BT)followed Your word. Now they have come to know that everything which You have given Me is from You; for (BU)the words which You gave Me (BV)I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that (BW)I came forth from You, and they believed that (BX)You sent Me. (BY)I ask on their behalf; (BZ)I do not ask on behalf of the world, but on the behalf of those whom (CA)You have given Me, because (CB)they are Yours; 10 and (CC)all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 I am no longer going to be in the world; and yet (CD)they themselves are in the world, and (CE)I am coming to You. (CF)Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name (CG)which You have given Me, so that (CH)they may be one just as We are. 12 While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name, (CI)which You have given Me; and I guarded them, and (CJ)not one of them perished except (CK)the [l]son of destruction, so that the (CL)Scripture would be fulfilled.

The Disciples in the World

13 But now (CM)I am coming to You; and (CN)these things I speak in the world so that they may have My (CO)joy made full in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; and (CP)the world has hated them because (CQ)they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I am not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them away from [m](CR)the evil one. 16 (CS)They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (CT)Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 Just as (CU)You sent Me into the world, (CV)I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I (CW)sanctify Myself, so that they themselves also may be (CX)sanctified (CY)in truth.

20 “I am not asking on behalf of these alone, but also for those who believe in Me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; (CZ)just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, (DA)so that the world may [n]believe that (DB)You sent Me.

Disciples’ Future Glory

22 The (DC)glory which You have given Me I also have given to them, so that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 (DD)I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected [o]in unity, so that the world may [p]know that (DE)You sent Me, and You (DF)loved them, just as You loved Me. 24 Father, I desire that (DG)they also, whom You have given Me, (DH)be with Me where I am, so that they may see My (DI)glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before (DJ)the foundation of the world.

25 (DK)Righteous Father, [q]although (DL)the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that (DM)You sent Me; 26 and (DN)I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that (DO)the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Judas Betrays Jesus

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (DP)He went away with His disciples across (DQ)the [r]ravine of the Kidron, where there was (DR)a garden which He entered [s]with His disciples. Now Judas, who was [t]betraying Him, also knew the place, because Jesus had (DS)often met there with His disciples. (DT)So Judas, having obtained (DU)the Roman [u]cohort and (DV)officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, *came there with lanterns, (DW)torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, (DX)knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, came out into the open and *said to them, (DY)Whom are you seeking?” They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. Now then, when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. He then asked them again, (DZ)Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you are seeking Me, let these men go on their way.” This took place so that the word which He spoke would be fulfilled: (EA)Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.” 10 Then Simon Peter, (EB)since he had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; (EC)the cup which the Father has given Me, am I not to drink it?”

Jesus before the Priests

12 (ED)So (EE)the Roman [v]cohort, the [w]commander, and the (EF)officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him, 13 and brought Him to (EG)Annas first; for he was the father-in-law of (EH)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that (EI)it was in their best interest for one man to die in behalf of the people.

15 (EJ)Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into (EK)the courtyard of the high priest, 16 (EL)but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. 17 (EM)Then the slave woman who was the doorkeeper *said to Peter, “(EN)You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?” He *said, “I am not.” 18 Now the slaves and the (EO)officers were standing there, having made (EP)a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were (EQ)warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.

19 (ER)The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I (ES)have spoken openly to the world; I always (ET)taught in [x]synagogues and (EU)in the temple area, where all the Jews congregate; and I said nothing in secret. 21 Why are you asking Me? Ask those who have heard what I spoke to them. Look: these people know what I said.” 22 But when He said this, one of the (EV)officers, who was standing nearby, (EW)struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” 23 (EX)Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” 24 (EY)So Annas sent Him bound to (EZ)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

25 (FA)Now (FB)Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “(FC)You are not one of His disciples as well, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one (FD)whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in (FE)the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately (FF)a rooster crowed.

Jesus before Pilate

28 (FG)Then they *brought Jesus from (FH)Caiaphas into (FI)the [y]Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter (FJ)the [z]Praetorium, so that (FK)they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 (FL)Therefore Pilate came out to them and *said, “What accusation are you bringing against this Man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not [aa]a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.” 31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not [ab]permitted to put anyone to death.” 32 This happened so that (FM)the word of Jesus which He said, indicating what kind of death He was going to die, would be fulfilled.

33 Therefore Pilate (FN)entered the Praetorium again, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “(FO)You are the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this [ac]on your own, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me; what have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, (FP)My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not [ad]of this realm.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, (FQ)You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: (FR)to testify to the truth. (FS)Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” 38 Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And after saying this, he (FT)came out again to the Jews and *said to them, “(FU)I find no grounds at all for charges in [ae]His case. 39 (FV)However, you have a custom that I release one prisoner [af]for you at the Passover; therefore do you wish that I release [ag]for you the King of the Jews?” 40 So they shouted again, saying, “(FW)Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a rebel.
