Read the Gospels in 40 Days
23 2 How the Scribes teaching the people the Law of Moses, behave themselves. 5 Their Phylacteries, and Fringes. 7 Greetings. 8 We are brethren. 9 The Father. 10 The servant. 13 To shut the kingdom of heaven. 14 To devour widow’s houses. 15 A Proselyte. 16 To swear by the Temple. 23 To tithe mint. 25 To cleanse the outside of the cup. 27 Painted sepulchers. 33 Serpents, vipers. 37 The Hen.
1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 [a]Saying, The (A)Scribes and the Pharisees [b]sit in Moses’ seat.
3 [c]All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do: but after their works do not: for they say, and do not.
4 (B)[d]For they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 [e]All their works they do for to be seen of men: for they make their [f]phylacteries broad, and make long [g]the (C)fringes of their garments,
6 (D)And love the chief place at feasts, and to have the chief seats in the [h]assemblies,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, [i]Rabbi.
8 (E)[j]But be not ye [k]called, Rabbi: for [l]one is your doctor, to wit, Christ, and all ye are brethren.
9 And (F)call no man your [m]father upon the earth: for there is but one, your father which is in heaven.
10 Be not called [n]doctors: for one is your doctor, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you, let him be your servant.
12 (G)For whosoever [o]will exalt himself, shall be brought low: and whosoever will humble himself, shall be exalted.
13 ¶ [p]Woe therefore be unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, [q]hypocrites, because ye shut up the kingdom of heaven before men: for ye yourselves go not in, neither suffer ye them that would [r]enter, to come in.
14 (H)[s]Woe be unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye devour widows’ houses, even [t]under a color of long prayers: wherefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 Woe be unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye compass sea and [u]land to make one of your profession: and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell, than you yourselves.
16 Woe be unto you blind guides, which say, Whosoever sweareth by the Temple, it is nothing: but whosoever sweareth by the gold of the Temple, he [v]offendeth.
17 Ye fools and blind, Whether is greater, the gold, or the Temple that [w]sanctifieth the gold?
18 And whosoever sweareth by the altar, it is nothing: but whosoever sweareth by the offering that is upon it, offendeth.
19 Ye fools and blind, whether is greater, the offering, or the altar which sanctifieth the offering?
20 Whosoever therefore sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 (I)And whosoever sweareth by the Temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 (J)And he that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the [x]throne of God, and by him that sitteth theron.
23 ¶ (K)[y]Woe be to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye tithe mint, and anise, and cummin, and leave the weightier matters of the law, as judgment, and mercy and [z]fidelity. These ought ye to have done, and not to have left the other.
24 Ye blind guides, which strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 ¶ [aa]Woe be to you, (L)Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye make clean the utter side of the cup, and of the platter: but within they are full of bribery and excess.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Woe be to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye are like unto whited tombs, which appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and all filthiness.
28 So are ye also: for outward ye appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 (M)[ab]Woe be unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye build the tombs of the Prophets, and garnish the sepulchers of the righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in the blood of the Prophets.
31 So then ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them that murdered the Prophets.
32 [ac]Fulfill ye also the measure of your fathers.
33 O serpents, the generation of vipers, how should ye escape the damnation of [ad]hell!
34 [ae]Wherefore behold, I send unto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes, and of them ye shall kill and crucify: and of them shall ye scourge in your Synagogues, and persecute from city to city,
35 [af]That upon you may come all the righteous blood that was shed upon the earth, (N)from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zechariah the son of [ag]Berechiah, (O)whom ye slew between the Temple and the altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, all these things shall come upon this generation.
37 (P)[ah]Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the Prophets, and stonest them which are sent to thee, how often would I have [ai]gathered thy children together, as the hen gathered her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 Behold, your habitation shall be left unto you desolate.
39 For I say unto you, ye shall not see me henceforth till that ye say, Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord.
24 2 The destruction of the Temple. 4 The signs of Christ’s coming. 12 Iniquity. 23 False Christs. 29 The signs of the end of the world. 31 The Angels. 32 The fig tree. 37 The days of Noah. 42 We must watch. 45 The servant.
1 And (Q)Jesus went out, and departed from the Temple, and his disciples came to him, to show him the building of the Temple.
2 [aj]And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, (R)there shall not be here left a stone upon a stone, that shall not be cast down.
3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, his disciples came unto him apart, saying, Tell us when these things shall be, and what sign shall be of thy coming, and of the end of the world.
4 [ak]And Jesus answered, and said unto them, (S)Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my Name, saying, I am Christ, and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars, and rumors of wars: see that ye be not (T)troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the [al]end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and realm against realm, and there shall be famine, and pestilence, and earthquakes in [am]divers places.
8 All these are but the beginning of [an]sorrows.
9 (U)Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you, and ye shall be hated of all nations for my Name’s sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall arise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall be increased, the love of many shall be cold.
13 (V)[ao]But he that endureth to the end, he shall be saved.
14 And this [ap]Gospel of the kingdom shall be preached through the whole [aq]world for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come.
15 ¶ [ar]When ye (W)therefore shall see the [as]abomination of desolation spoken of by (X)Daniel the Prophet, set in the holy place (let him that readeth consider it.)
16 Then let them which be in Judea, flee into the mountains.
17 Let him which is on the housetop, not come down to fetch anything out of his house.
18 And he that is in the field, let not him return back to fetch his [at]clothes.
19 And woe shall be to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days.
20 But pray that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the (Y)[au]Sabbath day.
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not from the beginning of the world to this time, nor shall be.
22 And except [av]those days should be shortened, there should no [aw]flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.
23 (Z)Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there, believe it not.
24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and [ax]shall show great signs and wonders, so that if it were possible, they should deceive the very elect.
25 Behold, I have told you before.
26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert, go not forth: Behold, he is in the secret places, believe it not.
27 For as the lightning cometh out of the East, and is seen into the West, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
28 (AA)[ay]For wheresoever a dead [az]carcass is, thither will the Eagles be gathered together.
29 (AB)[ba]And immediately after the tribulations of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
30 And then shall appear the [bb]sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the [bc]kindreds of the earth [bd]mourn, (AC)and they shall see the Son of man [be]come in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31 (AD)And he shall send his Angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect, from the [bf]four winds, and from the one end of the heavens unto the other.
32 [bg]Now learn the parable of the fig tree: when her bough is yet [bh]tender, and it putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near.
33 So likewise ye, when ye see all these things, know that the kingdom of God is near, even at the doors.
34 Verily I say unto you, this [bi]generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
35 (AE)[bj]Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
36 [bk]But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no not the Angels of heaven, but my father only.
37 But as the days of Noah were, so likewise shall the coming of the Son of man be.
38 (AF)For as in the days before the flood, they did [bl]eat and drink, marry, and give in marriage, unto the day that Noah entered into the Ark,
39 And knew nothing, till the flood came, and took them all away, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40 (AG)[bm]Then two shall be in the fields, the one shall be received, and the other shall be refused.
41 [bn]Two women shall be grinding at the mill: the one shall be received, and the other shall be refused.
42 (AH)[bo]Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your master will come.
43 (AI)Of this be sure, that if the good man of the house knew at what watch the thief would come, he would surely watch, and not suffer his house to be dug through.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in the hour that ye think not, will the Son of man come.
45 (AJ)Who then is a faithful servant and wise, whom his master hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his master when he cometh, shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48 But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My master doth defer his coming,
49 And begin to smite his fellows, and to eat, and to drink with the drunken,
50 That servant’s master will come in a day, when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And will [bp]cut him off, and give him his portion with hypocrites: (AK)there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
