Version
Job 37-39

37 1 Elihu proveth that the unsearchable wisdom of God is manifest by his works. 4 As by the thunders. 6 The snow. 9 The whirlwind. 11 And the rain.

At this also mine heart is [a]astonied, and is moved out of his place.

Hear the [b]sound of his voice, and the noise that goeth out of his mouth.

He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his light unto the ends of the world.

After it a noise soundeth: he thundereth with the voice of his majesty, and he will not stay [c]them when his voice is heard.

God thundereth marvelously with his voice: he worketh great things, which we know not.

For he saith to the snow, Be thou upon the earth [d]likewise to the small rain and to the great rain of his power.

With the force thereof he [e]shutteth up every man, that all men may know his work.

Then the beasts go into the den, and remain in their places.

The whirlwind cometh out of the South, and the cold from the [f]North wind.

10 At the breath of God the frost is given, and the breadth of the waters [g]is made narrow.

11 He maketh also the clouds to [h]labor, to water the earth, and scattereth the cloud of [i]his light.

12 And it is turned about by his government, that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the whole world:

13 Whether it be for [j]punishment, or for his land, or of mercy, he causeth it to come.

14 Hearken unto this, O Job: stand and consider the wondrous works of God.

15 Didst thou know when God disposed them? and caused the [k]light of his cloud to shine?

16 Hast thou known the [l]variety of the cloud, and the wondrous works of him that is perfect in knowledge?

17 Or how thy clothes are [m]warm, when he maketh the earth quiet through the South wind?

18 Hast thou stretched out the heavens, which are strong, and as a molten [n]glass?

19 Tell us what we shall say unto him: for we cannot dispose our matter because of [o]darkness.

20 Shall it be [p]told him when I speak? or shall man speak when he shall be [q]destroyed?

21 And now men see not the light, [r]which shineth in the clouds, but the wind passeth and cleanseth them.

22 The [s]brightness cometh out of the North: the praise thereof is to God, which is terrible.

23 It is the Almighty: we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power and judgment, and abundant in justice: he [t]afflicteth not.

24 Let men therefore fear him: for he will not regard any that are wise in their own conceit.

38 1 God speaketh to Job, and declareth the weakness of man in the consideration of his creatures, by whose excellency the power, justice, and providence of the Creator is known.

Then answered the Lord unto Job out of the [u]whirlwind, and said,

Who is this that [v]darkeneth the counsel by words without knowledge?

Gird up now thy loins like a man: I [w]will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

Where wast thou when I [x]laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest, or who hath stretched the line over it:

Whereupon are the foundations thereof set: or who laid the cornerstone thereof:

When the stars of the morning [y]praised me together, and all the [z]children of God rejoiced:

Or who hath shut up the Sea with doors, when it issued and came forth as out of the womb:

When I made the clouds as a covering thereof, and darkness as the [aa]swaddling bands thereof:

10 When I establisheth my commandment upon it, and set bars and doors,

11 And said, hitherto shalt thou come, but no further, and here shall it [ab]stay thy proud waves.

12 Hast thou commanded the [ac]morning since thy days? hast thou caused the morning to know his place?

13 That it might take hold of the corners of the earth, and that the wicked might be [ad]shaken out of it?

14 It is turned as clay to fashion, [ae]and all stand up as a garment.

15 And from the wicked their light shall be taken away, and the high arm shall be broken.

16 Hast thou entered into the bottoms of the sea? or hast thou walked to seek out the [af]depth?

17 Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

18 Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? tell if thou knowest all this.

19 Where is the way where light dwelleth? and where is the place of darkness,

20 That thou [ag]shouldest receive it in the bounds thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?

21 Knewest thou it, because thou wast then born? and because the number of thy days is great?

22 Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

23 Which I have hid [ah]against the time of trouble, against the day of war and battle?

24 By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the East wind upon the earth?

25 Who hath divided the spouts for the rain? or the way for the lightning of the thunders,

26 To cause it to rain on the earth where no man is, and in the wilderness where there is no man?

27 To fulfill the wild and waste place, and to cause the bud of the herb to spring forth?

28 Who is the father of the rain? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?

29 Out of whose womb came the ice? who hath engendered the frost of the heaven?

30 The waters are hid [ai]as with a stone: and the face of the depth is frozen.

31 Canst thou restrain the sweet influences of [aj]the Pleiades, or loose the bands of [ak]Orion?

32 Canst thou bring forth [al]Mazzaroth in their time? canst thou also guide [am]Arcturus with his sons?

33 Knowest thou the course of heaven, or canst thou set the [an]rule thereof in the earth?

34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that the abundance of water may cover thee?

35 Canst thou send the lightnings that they may walk, and say unto thee, Lo, here we are?

36 Who hath put wisdom in the [ao]reins? or who hath given the heart understanding?

37 Who can number clouds by wisdom? or who can cause to cease the [ap]bottles of heaven,

38 When the earth groweth into hardness, [aq]and the clots are fast together?

39 The bounty and providence of God, which extendeth even to the young ravens, giveth man full occasion to put his confidence in God. 37 Job confesseth and humbleth himself.

Wilt [ar]thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the lion’s whelps,

When they crouch in their places, and remain in the covert to lie in wait?

Who prepareth for the raven his meat, when his birds [as]cry unto God, wandering for lack of meat?

Knowest thou the time when the wild goats bring forth young? or dost thou mark when the [at]hinds do calve?

Canst thou number the months that they [au]fulfill? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

They bow themselves: they [av]bruise their young and cast out their sorrows.

Yet their young wax fat, and grow up with corn: they go forth and return not unto them.

Who hath set the wild ass at liberty? or who hath loosed the bonds of the wild ass?

It is I which have made the wilderness his house, and the [aw]salt places his dwellings.

10 He derideth the multitude of the city: he heareth not the cry of the driver.

11 He seeketh out the mountain for his pasture, and searcheth after every green thing.

12 Will the unicorn [ax]serve thee? or will he tarry by thy crib?

13 Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band to labor in the furrow? or will he plow the valleys after thee?

14 Wilt thou trust in him, because his strength is great, and cast off thy labor unto him?

15 Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it unto thy barn?

16 Hast thou given the pleasant wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?

17 Which leaveth his eggs in the earth, and maketh them [ay]hot in the dust,

18 And forgetteth that the foot might scatter them, or that the wild beast might break them.

19 He showeth himself cruel unto his young ones, as they were not his, and is without fear, as if he travailed [az]in vain.

20 For God had deprived him of [ba]wisdom, and hath given him no part of understanding.

21 When [bb]time is, he mounteth on high: he mocketh the horse and his rider.

22 Hast thou given the horse strength, or covered his neck with [bc]neighing?

23 Hast thou made him afraid as the grasshopper? his strong neighing is fearful.

24 He [bd]diggeth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth forth to meet the harnessed man.

25 He mocketh at fear, and is not afraid, and turneth not back from the sword,

26 Though the quiver rattle against him, the glittering spear and the shield.

27 He [be]swalloweth the ground for fierceness and rage, and he believeth not that it is the noise of the trumpet.

28 He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha: he smelleth the battle afar off, and the noise of the captains, and the shouting.

29 Shall the hawk fly by thy wisdom, stretching out his wings even toward the [bf]South?

30 Doth the eagle mount up at thy commandment, or make his nest on high?

31 She abideth and remaineth in the rock, even upon the top of the rock, and the tower,

32 From thence she spieth for meat, and her eyes behold afar off.

33 His young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

34 Moreover the Lord spake unto Job, and said,

35 Is this [bg]to learn, to strive with the Almighty? he that reproveth God, let him answer to it.

36 ¶ Then Job answered the Lord, saying,

37 Behold, I am [bh]vile: what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.

38 Once have I spoken, but I will answer no more, yea twice, but I will proceed no further.

2 Corinthians 4:13-5:10

13 [a]And because we have the same [b]spirit of faith, according as it is written, (A)I believed, and therefore have I spoken, we also believe, and therefore speak,

14 Knowing that he which hath raised up the Lord Jesus, shall raise us up also by Jesus, and shall set us with you.

15 [c]For all things are for your sakes, [d]that that most plenteous grace by the thanksgiving of many, may redound to the praise of God.

16 Therefore we faint not, [e]but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is [f]renewed daily.

17 For our [g]light affliction which is but for a moment, causeth unto us a far most excellent and an eternal weight of [h]glory:

18 While we look not on the things which are seen, but on the things which are not seen for the things which are seen, are temporal: but the things which are not seen, are eternal.

1 He continueth in the same argument, 5 touching the certain hope of salvation 7 through faith, 12 not to praise himself, 14 seeing he hath God and his Church before his eyes, 17 and esteemeth nothing, but newness of life in Christ.

For [i]we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle be destroyed, we have a building given of God, that is, an house not made with hands, but eternal in the heavens.

For therefore we sigh, desiring to be [j]clothed with our house, which is from [k]heaven.

[l]Because that if we be clothed, we shall not be found (B)naked.

For indeed we that are in this tabernacle, sigh and are burdened because we would not be unclothed, but would be clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

And he that hath [m]created us for this thing, is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

[n]Therefore we are always [o]bold, though we know that while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord.

(For we walk by [p]faith, and not by sight.)

Nevertheless, we are [q]bold, and love rather to remove out of the body, and to dwell with the Lord.

Wherefore also we [r]covet, that both dwelling at home, and removing from home, we may be acceptable to him.

10 (C)[s]For we must all [t]appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that every man may receive the things which are done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or evil.

Psalm 44:9-26

But now thou art far off, and puttest us to [a]confusion, and goest not forth with our armies.

10 Thou makest us to turn back from the adversary, and they which hate us, spoil [b]for themselves.

11 (A)Thou givest us [c]as sheep to be eaten, and dost scatter us among the nations.

12 Thou sellest thy people [d]without gain, and dost not increase their price.

13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbors, a jest and laughing stock to them that are round about us.

14 Thou makest us a proverb among the nations, and a nodding of the head among the people.

15 My [e]confusion is daily before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

16 For the voice of the slanderer and rebuker, for the enemy and [f]avenger.

17 All this is come upon us, yet do we not [g]forget thee, neither deal we falsely concerning thy covenant.

18 Our heart is not turned back: neither our steps gone out of thy paths,

19 Albeit thou hast smitten us down into the place of [h]dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

20 If we have forgotten the Name of our God, and held up our hands to a [i]strange god,

21 Shall not God [j]search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

22 Surely for thy sake [k]are we slain continually, and are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

23 Up, why sleepest thou, O Lord? awake, be not far off forever.

24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face? and forgettest our misery and our affliction?

25 For our soul is [l]beaten down unto the dust: our belly cleaveth to the ground.

26 Rise up for our succor, and redeem us for thy [m]mercy’s sake.

Proverbs 22:13

13 The slothful man saith, [a]A lion is without, I shall be slain in the street.
