The Death of Moses
34 (A)Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And Yahweh (B)showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, 2 and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the [a](C)western sea, 3 and the [b]Negev and the plain in the valley of Jericho, (D)the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. 4 Then Yahweh said to him, “This is the land which (E)I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your seed’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.” 5 So Moses (F)the servant of Yahweh (G)died there in the land of Moab, according to the [c]command of Yahweh. 6 And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, (H)opposite Beth-peor; but (I)no man knows his burial place to this day. 7 Now Moses was (J)120 years old when he died; (K)his eye was not dim, nor his vigor abated. 8 So the sons of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.
9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was (L)filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as Yahweh had commanded Moses. 10 (M)And there has not yet arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom (N)Yahweh knew face to face, 11 [d]in regard to all the signs and wonders which Yahweh sent him to do in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land, 12 and [e]in regard to all the mighty [f]power and [g]in regard to all the great terror which Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
Yahweh’s Commands to Joshua
1 Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of [h]Yahweh, that Yahweh spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ [i]attendant, saying, 2 “Moses (O)My servant is dead; so now arise, (P)cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel. 3 (Q)Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses. 4 (R)From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun will be your territory. 5 (S)No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; (T)I will not fail you or forsake you. 6 (U)Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous to [j](V)be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn aside from it to the right or to the left, so that you may [k]be prosperous wherever you go. 8 (W)This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may [l]be careful to do according to all that is written in it; (X)for then you will make your way successful, and then you will [m]be prosperous. 9 Have I not commanded you? (Y)Be strong and courageous! (Z)Do not be in dread or be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua’s Command to the Officers
10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, 11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within (AA)three days you are to cross this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which Yahweh your God is giving you, to possess it.’”
12 (AB)To the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua [n]said, 13 “Remember the word which Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, saying, ‘(AC)Yahweh your God gives you rest and will give you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle shall remain in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but you shall cross before your brothers in battle array, all your valiant warriors, and shall help them 15 until Yahweh gives your brothers rest as He gives you, and they also possess the land which Yahweh your God is giving them. (AD)Then you shall return to the land of your possession and possess it, which Moses (AE)the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan to the east toward the sunrise.”
16 And they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we listened to Moses in all things, so we will listen to you; only (AF)may Yahweh your God be with you as He was with Moses. 18 Anyone who rebels against your [o]command and does not listen to your words, in all that you command him, shall be put to death; only be strong and courageous.”
Rahab Hides the Spies
2 Then Joshua the son of Nun sent two men as spies secretly from (AG)Shittim, saying, “Go, see the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and came into the house of (AH)a harlot whose name was Rahab and [p]lodged there. 2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” 3 And the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” 4 But the (AI)woman had taken the two men and hidden them, and she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 Now it happened when it was time to shut the gate at dark, that the men went out; I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you may overtake them.” 6 But (AJ)she had brought them up to the roof and concealed them in the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof. 7 So the men pursued them on the road to the Jordan to the fords; and as soon as those who were pursuing them had gone out, they shut the gate.
8 Now before they lay down, [q]she came up to them on the roof 9 and said to the men, “(AK)I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the (AL)terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have [r]melted away before you. 10 (AM)For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the [s]Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt and (AN)what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you [t]devoted to destruction. 11 Indeed we heard it, (AO)and our hearts melted, and a courageous spirit no longer rose up in any man because of you; for (AP)Yahweh your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath. 12 So now, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have shown lovingkindness to you, that you also will show lovingkindness to my father’s household and give me a (AQ)pledge of [u]truth, 13 and preserve my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters alive, with all who belong to them, and deliver our [v]lives from death.” 14 So the men said to her, “Our [w]life [x]for yours if you do not tell this business of ours; and it will be when Yahweh gives us the land that we will (AR)show lovingkindness and truth to you.”
The Oath to Rahab
15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall, so that she was living on the wall. 16 And she said to them, “(AS)Go to the hill country, lest the pursuers reach you. And hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return. Then afterward you may go on your way.” 17 And the men said to her, “(AT)We shall be free from this oath [y]to you which you have made us swear, 18 [z]unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and (AU)gather to yourself into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father’s household. 19 And it will be that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be free; but anyone who is with you in the house, (AV)his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him. 20 But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be free from the oath which you have made us swear.” 21 And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” So she sent them away, and they went; and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22 And they went and came to the hill country and remained there for three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers had sought them [aa]all along the road but had not found them. 23 Then the two men returned and came down from the hill country and crossed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they recounted to him all that had happened to them. 24 And they said to Joshua, “Surely Yahweh has given all the land into our hands; moreover, (AW)all the inhabitants of the land have [ab]melted away before us.”
The Narrow Door
22 And He was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and (A)proceeding on His way to Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them, 24 “(B)Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 Once the head of the house gets up and (C)shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘(D)Lord, open up to us!’ then He will answer and say to you, ‘(E)I do not know where you are from.’ 26 Then you will (F)begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ 27 And He will say, ‘I tell you, (G)I do not know where you are from; (H)depart from Me, all you workers of unrighteousness.’ 28 (I)In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being cast out. 29 And they (J)will come from east and west and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, (K)some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.”
Lament over Jerusalem
31 Just at that time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, “Leave and go from here, for (L)Herod wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I [a](M)finish.’ 33 Nevertheless (N)I must journey on today and tomorrow and the next day, for it is not possible that a (O)prophet would perish outside of Jerusalem. 34 (P)O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, (Q)just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you did not want it! 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate, and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘(R)Blessed is He who comes in the name of the [b]Lord!’”
Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
14 And it happened that when He went into the house of one of the [c]leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, (S)they were watching Him closely. 2 And behold, in front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy. 3 And Jesus answered and spoke to the (T)scholars of the Law and Pharisees, saying, “(U)Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” 4 But they were silent. And He took hold of him, healed him, and sent him away. 5 And He said to them, “[d](V)Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?” 6 (W)And they could make no reply to this.
How Long, O Yahweh?
A Psalm of Asaph.
79 O God, the (A)nations have come into (B)Your inheritance;
They have defiled Your (C)holy temple;
They have (D)laid Jerusalem in ruins.
2 They have given the (E)dead bodies of Your slaves for food to the birds of the heavens,
The flesh of Your holy ones to the beasts of the earth.
3 They have poured out their blood like water round about Jerusalem;
And there was (F)no one to bury them.
4 We have become a (G)reproach to our neighbors,
A mockery and derision to those around us.
5 (H)How long, O Yahweh? Will You be angry forever?
Will Your (I)jealousy (J)burn like fire?
6 (K)Pour out Your wrath upon the nations which (L)do not know You,
And upon the kingdoms which (M)do not call upon Your name.
7 For they have (N)devoured Jacob
And (O)laid waste his [a]abode.
8 (P)Do not remember our former iniquities against us;
Let Your compassion quickly (Q)approach us,
For we are (R)brought very low.
9 (S)Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of (T)Your name;
And deliver us and (U)atone for our sins (V)for Your name’s sake.
10 (W)Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
Let it be known among the nations before our eyes:
(X)Vengeance for the blood of Your slaves which has been poured out.
11 Let (Y)the groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Your [b]power preserve [c]those who are (Z)doomed to die.
12 And return to our neighbors (AA)sevenfold (AB)into their bosom
[d]The (AC)reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.
13 But as for us, as Your people and the (AD)sheep of Your pasture,
We will (AE)give thanks to You forever;
From generation to generation we will (AF)recount Your praise.
26 The righteous is a guide to his neighbor,
But the way of the wicked makes them wander about.
