Haggai 1-2

The First Set of Messages:
Build the Lord’s House

In the second year of King Darius,[a] on the first day of the sixth month,[b] the word of the Lord came through[c] Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest.

This is what the Lord of Armies[d] says. This people has said, “It is not the right time for the House of the Lord to be built.”

So the word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet.

Is it time for you to live in your paneled houses while this house lies in ruins? Now this is what the Lord of Armies says. Consider your ways carefully. You sow much seed but you harvest little. You eat but you are never satisfied. You drink but you never become drunk. You get dressed, but no one is warm. The one who makes money puts that money into a bag with a hole in it.

This is what the Lord of Armies says. Consider your ways carefully. Go up to the mountains, bring lumber down, and build the House. I will be pleased with it, and I will be glorified, says the Lord.

You expected much, but look, there was little. When you brought it home, I blew it away.

Why did I do that? This is a declaration of the Lord of Armies. It is because my house lies in ruins while each of you is busy with your own house. 10 So it is because of you that the heavens have withheld the dew and the earth has withheld its produce. 11 I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the olive oil, on everything which the soil produces, on people, on livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.

12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the surviving remnant[e] of the people, listened to the voice of the Lord their God and to the words of Haggai the prophet, because the Lord their God had sent him. So the people feared the Lord.

13 Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, spoke the Lord’s message to the people: “I am with you, declares the Lord.”

14 The Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the surviving remnant of the people, and they came and worked on the house for the Lord of Armies, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.

The Second Message:
The Glory of This House

On the twenty-first day of the seventh month,[f] the word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet.

Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the surviving remnant of the people.

Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look now? Doesn’t it seem like nothing in your eyes?

But now, be strong, Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest! Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord. Get to work, and I will be with you, declares the Lord of Armies. This is the promise I made[g] to you when you left Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Do not be afraid!

Listen, this is what the Lord of Armies says. Once again, in a little while, I myself will shake the heavens and the earth, the seas and the dry land. I will shake all the nations, and the desired of all the nations will come,[h] and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of Armies. The silver is mine and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of Armies. The glory of this second house will be greater than that of the first one,[i] says the Lord of Armies. For in this place I will provide peace, declares the Lord of Armies.

The Third Set of Messages:
The Transfer of Cleanness and Uncleanness

10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month in the second year of Darius,[j] the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet.

11 This is what the Lord of Armies says. Ask the priests about the law. 12 If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and he touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any food with the fold of the garment, will that food become holy?

The priests answered, “No.”

13 Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean from contact with a dead body touches any of these things, will that thing become unclean?”

The priests answered, “It will be unclean.”

14 Then Haggai responded:

This is how it is with this people, and this is how it is with this nation in my presence, declares the Lord, and this is how it is with all the work of their hands. Everything that they offer there is unclean.

15 Now, consider your ways carefully, from the time before stone was laid upon stone in the temple of the Lord, up to this day.[k] 16 Through all that time, whenever anyone came to a heap of grain to get twenty measures,[l] there were only ten. Whenever anyone came to the wine vat to draw out fifty measures, there were only twenty. 17 I struck you and all the work of your hands with blight, mildew, and hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the Lord.

18 Consider your ways carefully, from today, the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, all the way back to the day when the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid.[m] Consider this. 19 Is there still seed in the barn? The vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not produced fruit.

But from this day on, I will bless you.

Zerubbabel Is the Lord’s Signet Ring

20 The word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month.

21 Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah. Say, “I will shake the heavens and the earth. 22 I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms. I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overturn the chariots and those who ride in them. The horses and their riders will go down, each one by the sword of his brother. 23 On that day, declares the Lord of Armies, I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant, declares the Lord, and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the Lord of Armies.”

Revelation 11

The Two Witnesses

11 Then a measuring rod like a staff was given to me. He said,[a] “Stand up and measure the incense altar and the temple of God and those who worship in it. Exclude the outer court of the temple and do not measure it, because it has been given to the heathen. They will trample the holy city for forty-two months. I will commission my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”

These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that are standing before the Lord of the earth. If anyone wants to harm them, fire is going to come out of their mouths and consume their enemies. If anyone should want to harm them, it is necessary that he be killed in this way.

These two have the authority to shut the sky so that no rain falls during the days when they are prophesying. They also have authority over the waters, to turn them into blood, and the authority to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

The Beast That Kills the Two Witnesses

When they finish their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will fight against them, conquer them, and kill them. Their dead bodies will lie on the street of the great city, which spiritually[b] is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

Some from the peoples, tribes, languages, and nations will look at their dead bodies for three and a half days and will not permit them to be placed in a tomb. 10 Those who dwell on the earth will also rejoice over them and celebrate by sending gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

11 After three and a half days the breath of life from God came into them. They stood on their feet, and a great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 And I[c] heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” They went up into heaven in a cloud, as their enemies watched them. 13 At that moment there was also a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed by the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave praise to the God of heaven.

14 The second woe is past. See, the third woe is coming soon.

The Seventh Trumpet: The End of the World

15 Then the seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying:

The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and
    of his Christ,[d]
and he will reign forever and ever.

16 The twenty-four elders, who were sitting on their thrones before God, also fell on their faces and worshipped God, 17 saying:

We thank you, Lord God Almighty, who is, and who was,[e]
because you have taken your great power and reigned.
18 The nations were angry, and your anger has come.
And the time has come
when the dead are to be judged, and
when you will give the reward to your servants the prophets
            and to your saints,
namely, to those who fear your name, the small
                and the great, and
when you will destroy those who destroy the earth.

19 And God’s temple in heaven was opened and the Ark of his Covenant was seen in his temple. And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, crashes of thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm.

Psalm 139

Psalm 139

God’s Attributes—Too Wonderful for Me!

Heading
For the choir director. By David. A psalm.

God Is All-Knowing

Lord, you have investigated me,
and you know.
You know when I sit down and when I get up.
You understand my thoughts from far off.
You keep track of when I travel and when I stay,[a]
and you are familiar with all my ways.
Before there is a word on my tongue,
you, Lord, already know it completely.
You put a fence behind me and in front of me,
and you have placed your hand on me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.
It is too high—I cannot grasp it.

God Is Present Everywhere

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your Presence?[b]
If I go up to heaven, you are there.
If I make my bed in hell—there you are!
I rise on the wings of dawn.
I settle on the far side of the sea.
10 Even there your hand guides me,
and your right hand holds on to me.
11 And if I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light will become night around me,”
12 then even the darkness will not be too dark for you.
The night will be as light as the day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.

God Is Powerful and Good

13 For you created my inner organs.[c]
You wove me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Your works are wonderful,
and my soul knows that very well.
15 My bones were not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unfinished body.
In your book all of them were written.
Days were determined, before any of them existed.
17 Your thoughts to me are so precious, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18 If I would count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
I awake, and I am still with you.

God Is Holy

19 If only you would slay the wicked, O God,
so that bloody men would depart from me,
20 men who speak against you maliciously.
Your adversaries misuse your name.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord,
and detest those who rise up against you?
22 I absolutely hate them. To me they are enemies.
23 Investigate me, God, and know my heart.
Test me and know my troubled thoughts.
24 See if there is any way in me that causes pain,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

Proverbs 30:15-16

15 The leech has two daughters: Give! Give!
Three things are never satisfied.
Four never say, “Enough!”:
16 the grave,
    a closed womb,
land that is never satisfied with water,
and fire that never says, “Enough!”
