New English Translation (NET)
Version
Genesis 8-10

But God remembered[a] Noah and all the wild animals and domestic animals that were with him in the ark. God caused a wind to blow over[b] the earth and the waters receded. The fountains of the deep and the floodgates of heaven were closed,[c] and the rain stopped falling from the sky. The waters kept receding steadily[d] from the earth, so that they[e] had gone down[f] by the end of the 150 days. On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, the ark came to rest on one of the mountains of Ararat.[g] The waters kept on receding[h] until the tenth month. On the first day of the tenth month, the tops of the mountains became visible.[i]

At the end of forty days,[j] Noah opened the window he had made in the ark[k] and sent out a raven; it kept flying back and forth[l] until the waters had dried up on the earth.

Then Noah[m] sent out a dove[n] to see if the waters had receded[o] from the surface of the ground. The dove could not find a resting place for its feet because water still covered[p] the surface of the entire earth, and so it returned to Noah[q] in the ark. He stretched out his hand, took the dove,[r] and brought it back into the ark.[s] 10 He waited seven more days and then sent out the dove again from the ark. 11 When[t] the dove returned to him in the evening, there was[u] a freshly plucked olive leaf in its beak! Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth. 12 He waited another seven days and sent the dove out again,[v] but it did not return to him this time.[w]

13 In Noah’s six hundred and first year,[x] in the first day of the first month, the waters had dried up from the earth, and Noah removed the covering from the ark and saw that[y] the surface of the ground was dry. 14 And by the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth[z] was dry.

15 Then God spoke to Noah and said, 16 “Come out of the ark, you, your wife, your sons, and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you all the living creatures that are with you. Bring out[aa] every living thing, including the birds, animals, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. Let them increase[ab] and be fruitful and multiply on the earth!”[ac]

18 Noah went out along with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives. 19 Every living creature, every creeping thing, every bird, and everything that moves on the earth went out of the ark in their groups.

20 Noah built an altar to the Lord. He then took some of every kind of clean animal and clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.[ad] 21 And the Lord smelled the soothing aroma[ae] and said[af] to himself,[ag] “I will never again curse[ah] the ground because of humankind, even though[ai] the inclination of their minds[aj] is evil from childhood on.[ak] I will never again destroy everything that lives, as I have just done.

22 “While the earth continues to exist,[al]
planting time[am] and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
and day and night will not cease.”

God’s Covenant with Humankind through Noah

Then God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. Every living creature of the earth and every bird of the sky will be terrified of you.[an] Everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea are under your authority.[ao] You may eat any moving thing that lives.[ap] As I gave you[aq] the green plants, I now give[ar] you everything.

“But[as] you must not eat meat[at] with its life (that is,[au] its blood) in it.[av] For your lifeblood[aw] I will surely exact punishment,[ax] from[ay] every living creature I will exact punishment. From each person[az] I will exact punishment for the life of the individual[ba] since the man was his relative.[bb]

“Whoever sheds human blood,[bc]
by other humans[bd]
must his blood be shed;
for in God’s image[be]
God[bf] has made humankind.

“But as for you,[bg] be fruitful and multiply; increase abundantly on the earth and multiply on it.”

God said to Noah and his sons,[bh] “Look. I now confirm[bi] my covenant with you and your descendants after you[bj] 10 and with every living creature that is with you, including the birds, the domestic animals, and every living creature of the earth with you, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature of the earth.[bk] 11 I confirm[bl] my covenant with you: Never again will all living things[bm] be wiped out[bn] by the waters of a flood;[bo] never again will a flood destroy the earth.”

12 And God said, “This is the guarantee[bp] of the covenant I am making[bq] with you[br] and every living creature with you, a covenant[bs] for all subsequent[bt] generations: 13 I will place[bu] my rainbow[bv] in the clouds, and it will become[bw] a guarantee of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever[bx] I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 then I will remember my covenant with you[by] and with all living creatures of all kinds.[bz] Never again will the waters become a flood and destroy[ca] all living things.[cb] 16 When the rainbow is in the clouds, I will notice it and remember[cc] the perpetual covenant between God and all living creatures of all kinds that are on the earth.”

17 So God said to Noah, “This is the guarantee of the covenant that I am confirming between me and all living things[cd] that are on the earth.”

The Curse on Canaan

18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Now Ham was the father of Canaan.)[ce] 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them the whole earth was populated.[cf]

20 Noah, a man of the soil,[cg] began to plant a vineyard.[ch] 21 When he drank some of the wine, he got drunk and uncovered himself[ci] inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan,[cj] saw his father’s nakedness[ck] and told his two brothers who were outside. 23 Shem and Japheth took the garment[cl] and placed it on their shoulders. Then they walked in backwards and covered up their father’s nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way[cm] so they did not see their father’s nakedness.

24 When Noah awoke from his drunken stupor[cn] he learned[co] what his youngest son had done[cp] to him. 25 So he said,

“Cursed[cq] be Canaan![cr]
The lowest of slaves[cs]
he will be to his brothers.”

26 He also said,

“Worthy of praise is[ct] the Lord, the God of Shem!
May Canaan be the slave of Shem![cu]
27 May God enlarge Japheth’s territory and numbers![cv]
May he[cw] live[cx] in the tents of Shem
and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth!”[cy]

28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 The entire lifetime of Noah was 950 years, and then he died.

The Table of Nations

10 This is the account[cz] of Noah’s sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.[da] Sons[db] were born[dc] to them after the flood.

The sons of Japheth[dd] were Gomer,[de] Magog,[df] Madai,[dg] Javan,[dh] Tubal,[di] Meshech,[dj] and Tiras.[dk] The sons of Gomer were[dl] Ashkenaz,[dm] Riphath,[dn] and Togarmah.[do] The sons of Javan were Elishah,[dp] Tarshish,[dq] the Kittim,[dr] and the Dodanim.[ds] From these the coastlands of the nations were separated into their lands, every one according to its language, according to their families, by their nations.

The sons of Ham were Cush,[dt] Mizraim,[du] Put,[dv] and Canaan.[dw] The sons of Cush were Seba,[dx] Havilah,[dy] Sabtah,[dz] Raamah,[ea] and Sabteca.[eb] The sons of Raamah were Sheba[ec] and Dedan.[ed]

Cush was the father of[ee] Nimrod; he began to be a valiant warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter[ef] before the Lord.[eg] (That is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.”) 10 The primary regions[eh] of his kingdom were Babel,[ei] Erech,[ej] Akkad,[ek] and Calneh[el] in the land of Shinar.[em] 11 From that land he went[en] to Assyria,[eo] where he built Nineveh,[ep] Rehoboth Ir,[eq] Calah,[er] 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and the great city Calah.[es]

13 Mizraim[et] was the father of[eu] the Ludites,[ev] Anamites,[ew] Lehabites,[ex] Naphtuhites,[ey] 14 Pathrusites,[ez] Casluhites[fa] (from whom the Philistines came),[fb] and Caphtorites.[fc]

15 Canaan was the father of[fd] Sidon his firstborn,[fe] Heth,[ff] 16 the Jebusites,[fg] Amorites,[fh] Girgashites,[fi] 17 Hivites,[fj] Arkites,[fk] Sinites,[fl] 18 Arvadites,[fm] Zemarites,[fn] and Hamathites.[fo] Eventually the families of the Canaanites were scattered 19 and the borders of Canaan extended[fp] from Sidon all the way to[fq] Gerar as far as Gaza, and all the way to[fr] Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, and by their nations.

21 And sons were also born[fs] to Shem (the older brother of Japheth),[ft] the father of all the sons of Eber.

22 The sons of Shem were Elam,[fu] Asshur,[fv] Arphaxad,[fw] Lud,[fx] and Aram.[fy] 23 The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.[fz] 24 Arphaxad was the father of[ga] Shelah,[gb] and Shelah was the father of Eber.[gc] 25 Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg because in his days the earth was divided,[gd] and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan was the father of[ge] Almodad,[gf] Sheleph,[gg] Hazarmaveth,[gh] Jerah,[gi] 27 Hadoram, Uzal,[gj] Diklah,[gk] 28 Obal,[gl] Abimael,[gm] Sheba,[gn] 29 Ophir,[go] Havilah,[gp] and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan. 30 Their dwelling place was from Mesha all the way to[gq] Sephar in the eastern hills. 31 These are the sons of Shem according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, and according to their nations.

32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, by their nations, and from these the nations spread[gr] over the earth after the flood.

Matthew 4:12-25

Preaching in Galilee

12 Now when Jesus[a] heard that John[b] had been imprisoned,[c] he went into Galilee. 13 While in Galilee, he moved from Nazareth to make his home in Capernaum[d] by the sea,[e] in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled:[f]

15 Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the way[g] by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light,
and on those who sit in the region and shadow of death a light has dawned.”[h]

17 From that time Jesus began to preach this message:[i] “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near!”

The Call of the Disciples

18 As[j] he was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen).[k] 19 He said to them, “Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people!”[l] 20 They[m] left their nets immediately and followed him.[n] 21 Going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John, in a boat[o] with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. Then[p] he called them. 22 They[q] immediately left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus’ Healing Ministry

23 Jesus[r] went throughout all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues,[s] preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and sickness[t] among the people. 24 So a report about him spread throughout Syria. People[u] brought to him all who suffered with various illnesses and afflictions, those who had seizures,[v] paralytics, and those possessed by demons,[w] and he healed them. 25 And large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis,[x] Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan River.[y]

Psalm 4

Psalm 4[a]

For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a psalm of David.

When I call out, answer me,
O God who vindicates me.[b]
Though I am hemmed in, you will lead me into a wide, open place.[c]
Have mercy on me[d] and respond to[e] my prayer.
You men,[f] how long will you try to turn my honor into shame?[g]
How long[h] will you love what is worthless[i]
and search for what is deceptive?[j] (Selah)
Realize that[k] the Lord shows the godly special favor;[l]
the Lord responds[m] when I cry out to him.
Tremble with fear and do not sin.[n]
Meditate as you lie in bed, and repent of your ways.[o] (Selah)
Offer the prescribed sacrifices[p]
and trust in the Lord.[q]
Many say, “Who can show us anything good?”
Smile upon us, Lord![r]
You make me happier[s]
than those who have abundant grain and wine.[t]
I will lie down and sleep peacefully,[u]
for you, Lord, make me safe and secure.[v]

Proverbs 1:20-23

Warning Against Disregarding Wisdom

20 Wisdom[a] calls out[b] in the street,
she shouts loudly[c] in the plazas;[d]
21 at the head of the noisy streets[e] she calls,
in the entrances of the gates in the city[f] she utters her words:[g]
22 “How long will you simpletons[h] love naiveté?[i]
How long[j] have mockers[k] delighted in[l] mockery?[m]
And how long[n] will fools[o] hate knowledge?
23 You should respond to[p] my rebuke.[q]
Then[r] I would pour out[s] my thoughts[t] to you;
I would make[u] my words known to you.
