The Restoration of the True People
10 Ask the Lord for rain in the season of the late spring rains[a]—the Lord who causes thunderstorms—and he will give everyone showers of rain and green growth in the field. 2 For the household gods[b] have spoken wickedness, the soothsayers have seen a lie, and the dreamers have disclosed emptiness and give comfort in vain. Therefore the people set out like sheep and become scattered because they have no shepherd.[c] 3 “I am enraged at the shepherds and will punish the lead goats.
“For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has brought blessing to his flock, the house of Judah, and will transform them into his majestic warhorse. 4 From him will come the cornerstone,[d] the wall peg,[e] the battle bow, and every ruler.[f] 5 And they will be like warriors trampling the mud of the streets in battle. They will fight, for the Lord will be with them, and will defeat the enemy cavalry.[g]
6 “I (says the Lord) will strengthen the kingdom[h] of Judah and deliver the people of Joseph[i] and will bring them back[j] because of my compassion for them. They will be as though I had never rejected them, for I am the Lord their God, and therefore I will hear them. 7 The Ephraimites will be like warriors and will rejoice as if they had drunk wine. Their children will see it and rejoice; they will celebrate in the things of the Lord. 8 I will signal for them and gather them, for I have already redeemed them; then they will become as numerous as they were before. 9 Though I scatter[k] them among the nations, they will remember in far-off places—they and their children will survive and return. 10 I will bring them back from Egypt and gather them from Assyria.[l] I will bring them to the lands of Gilead and Lebanon, and there will not be enough room for them. 11 The Lord[m] will cross the sea of storms and will calm its turbulence. The depths of the Nile will dry up, the pride of Assyria will be humbled, and the domination[n] of Egypt will be no more. 12 Thus I will strengthen them by my power,[o] and they will walk about[p] in my name,” says the Lord.

11 Open your gates, Lebanon,
so that the fire may consume your cedars.[q]
2 Howl, fir tree,
because the cedar has fallen;
the majestic trees have been destroyed.
Howl, oaks of Bashan,
because the impenetrable forest has fallen.
3 Listen to the howling of shepherds,
because their magnificence has been destroyed.
Listen to the roaring of young lions,
because the thickets of the Jordan have been devastated.
4 The Lord my God says this: “Shepherd the flock set aside for slaughter. 5 Those who buy them[r] slaughter them and are not held guilty; those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the Lord, for I am rich.’ Their own shepherds have no compassion for them. 6 Indeed, I will no longer have compassion on the people of the land,” says the Lord, “but instead I will turn every last person over to his neighbor and his king. They will devastate the land, and I will not deliver it from them.”
7 So I[s] began to shepherd the flock destined for slaughter, the most afflicted[t] of all the flock. Then I took two staffs,[u] calling one “Pleasantness”[v] and the other “Union,”[w] and I tended the flock. 8 Next I eradicated the three shepherds in one month,[x] for I ran out of patience with them and, indeed, they detested me as well. 9 I then said, “I will not shepherd you. What is to die, let it die, and what is to be eradicated, let it be eradicated. As for those who survive, let them eat each other’s flesh!”
10 Then I took my staff “Pleasantness” and cut it in two to annul my covenant that I had made with all the people. 11 So it was annulled that very day, and then the most afflicted of the flock who kept faith with me knew that it was the Lord’s message.
12 Then I[y] said to them, “If it seems good to you, pay me my wages, but if not, forget it.” So they weighed out my payment—thirty pieces of silver.[z] 13 The Lord then said to me, “Throw to the potter that exorbitant sum[aa] at which they valued me!” So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter[ab] at the temple[ac] of the Lord. 14 Then I cut the second staff “Union” in two in order to annul the covenant of brotherhood between Judah and Israel.
15 Again the Lord said to me, “Take up once more the equipment of a foolish shepherd.[ad] 16 Indeed, I am about to raise up a shepherd in the land who will not take heed of the sheep headed to slaughter, will not seek the scattered, and will not heal the injured.[ae] Moreover, he will not nourish the one that is healthy, but instead will eat the meat of the fat sheep[af] and tear off their hooves.
17 “Woe to the worthless shepherd
who abandons the flock!
May a sword fall on his arm and his right eye!
May his arm wither completely away,
and his right eye become completely blind!”
Babylon is Destroyed
18 After these things I saw another angel, who possessed great authority, coming down out of heaven, and the earth was lit up by his radiance.[a] 2 He[b] shouted with a powerful voice:
“Fallen, fallen, is Babylon the great!
She[c] has become a lair for demons,
a haunt[d] for every unclean spirit,
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detested beast.[e]
3 For all the nations[f] have fallen[g] from
the wine of her immoral passion,[h]
and the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality with her,
and the merchants of the earth have gotten rich from the power of her sensual behavior.”[i]
4 Then[j] I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, so you will not take part in her sins and so you will not receive her plagues, 5 because her sins have piled[k] up all the way to heaven[l] and God has remembered[m] her crimes.[n] 6 Repay her the same way she repaid others;[o] pay her back double[p] corresponding to her deeds. In the cup she mixed, mix double the amount for her. 7 As much as[q] she exalted herself and lived in sensual luxury,[r] to this extent give her torment and grief because she said to herself,[s] ‘I rule as queen and am no widow; I will never experience grief!’ 8 For this reason, she will experience her plagues[t] in a single day: disease,[u] mourning,[v] and famine, and she will be burned down[w] with fire, because the Lord God who judges her is powerful!”
9 Then[x] the kings of the earth who committed immoral acts with her and lived in sensual luxury[y] with her will weep and wail for her when they see the smoke from the fire that burns her up.[z] 10 They will stand a long way off because they are afraid of her torment, and will say,
“Woe, woe, O great city,
Babylon the powerful city!
For in a single hour your doom[aa] has come!”
11 Then[ab] the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn for her because no one buys their cargo[ac] any longer— 12 cargo such as gold, silver,[ad] precious stones, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk,[ae] scarlet cloth,[af] all sorts of things made of citron wood,[ag] all sorts of objects made of ivory, all sorts of things made of expensive wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice,[ah] incense, perfumed ointment,[ai] frankincense,[aj] wine, olive oil and costly flour,[ak] wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and four-wheeled carriages,[al] slaves and human lives.[am]
14 (The ripe fruit[an] you greatly desired[ao]
has gone from you,
and all your luxury[ap] and splendor[aq]
have gone from you—
they will never ever be found again!)[ar]
15 The merchants who sold[as] these things, who got rich from her, will stand a long way off because they are afraid of her torment. They will weep[at] and mourn, 16 saying,
“Woe, woe, O great city—
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet clothing,[au]
and adorned with gold,[av] precious stones, and pearls—
17 because in a single hour such great wealth has been destroyed!”[aw]
And every ship’s captain,[ax] and all who sail along the coast[ay]—seamen, and all who[az] make their living from the sea, stood a long way off 18 and began to shout[ba] when they saw the smoke from the fire that burned her up,[bb] “Who is like the great city?” 19 And they threw dust on their heads and were shouting with weeping and mourning,[bc]
“Woe, Woe, O great city—
in which all those who had ships on the sea got rich from her wealth—
because in a single hour she has been destroyed!”[bd]
20 (Rejoice over her, O heaven,
and you saints and apostles and prophets,
for God has pronounced judgment[be] against her on your behalf!)[bf]
21 Then[bg] one powerful angel picked up a stone like a huge millstone, threw it into the sea, and said,
“With this kind of sudden violent force[bh]
Babylon the great city will be thrown down[bi]
and it will never be found again!
22 And the sound of the harpists, musicians,
flute players, and trumpeters
will never be heard in you[bj] again.
No[bk] craftsman[bl] who practices any trade
will ever be found in you again;
the noise of a mill[bm] will never be heard in you again.
23 Even the light from a lamp
will never shine in you again!
The voices of the bridegroom and his bride
will never be heard in you again.
For your merchants were the tycoons of the world,
because all the nations[bn] were deceived by your magic spells![bo]
24 The[bp] blood of the saints and prophets was found in her,[bq]
along with the blood[br] of all those who had been killed on the earth.”
Psalm 146[a]
146 Praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord, O my soul.
2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live.
I will sing praises to my God as long as I exist.
3 Do not trust in princes,
or in human beings, who cannot deliver.[b]
4 Their life’s breath departs, they return to the ground.
On that day their plans die.[c]
5 How blessed is the one whose helper is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,
6 the one who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who remains forever faithful,[d]
7 vindicates the oppressed,[e]
and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord releases the imprisoned.
8 The Lord gives sight to the blind.
The Lord lifts up all who are bent over.[f]
The Lord loves the godly.
9 The Lord protects the resident foreigner.
He lifts up the fatherless and the widow,[g]
but he opposes the wicked.[h]
10 The Lord rules forever,
your God, O Zion, throughout the generations to come.[i]
